On this day in 1998, Casa Jimmy was officially opened in Rio De Janeiro by @taskbrazil, a wonderful charity funded and run by Ligia Da Silva.
31 years ago today, in 1994, in London, I was introduced to the work of Task Brasil by a Brazilian artist I met in Kensington, who currently had some of his paintings exhibited at nearby @leightonsambournemuseums. I was told that Ligia had started the organisation in 1992 with the objective of working with children living on the street in Rio.
To then access them to education and safe shelter and to also assist poor families that need aid.
The first time I met Ligia was in 1995 and I got to know and understand her vision and was inspired by her commitment to her work, and integrity, and I made a pledge to her organisation there and then to assist in the project that year.
As a result, in 1998, we were able to open a safe house which Ligia chose to call 'Casa Jimmy'. A multitude of children, teenage mothers, their babies and their families benefited from the facilities and services since then.
Ligia and Task Brasil had continued their hard work during the pandemic and beyond. It was a genuine pleasure to recently reconnect with Ligia during a trip she had made to London.
Congratulations and thanks to Ligia for your spirit,
