All social inequities are linked. Comprehensive systemic change will happen only if we are aware of these connections and work to bring an end to all inequalities—not just our favorites or the ones that most directly affect our part of the universe. No one is on the sidelines; by our actions or inactions, by our caring or our indifference, we are either part of the problem or part of the solution.
A. Breeze Harper, Sistah Vegan
50 billion chickens are slaughtered each year.
1.5 billion pigs.
500mio sheep
400mio goats
300mio cows
it’s impossible to calculate the number of fish.
we are almost 7 billion humans and we kill 52+ billion animals each and every year.
because of taste.
that’s it. that’s the only reason.
for the fleeting pleasure of eating something.
nothing else.
the thing is. that even if I was suddenly in a special situation health wise, where i “had to” eat animal products, I would never ever change any of my other vegan habits. I would still only buy vegan cosmetics and clothes, I would still avoid zoos. I might try to donate more money to animal rights charities.
But people leaving behind all of their veganism as soon as any health problems arise…..makes me wonder how much you really believed in the ethics of it tbh, and how much you cared about the animals.
I’m sure it’s relieving to finally be able to go along with everybody else again, and to push the animal suffering out of your mind again. Sucks to be like that though.
And all vegans who have to take part in animals suffering against their will, but are working to minimize it as much as they can: you are amazing 💖💚
““If intelligence and capability are not criteria for the possession of rights, why would animals — who have the capacity to feel fear and pain — be excluded from our moral consideration?””
— Jack Norris (via severelynerdysheep)
“Everything in moderation” is for avacados and peanut butter, not paying for animals to be slaughtered because we like the way they taste.
Carnists: uh why do u VEEGANS have to take non victim specific terms to describe oppressed victims and use it for ANIMALS- why r u STEALING, come up with your own terms and don’t ruin the PURITY
Vegans: vegetarian, vegan, carnist, speciesism, misothery
Carnists: wat th… U come here…into my own hou-listen here u don’t know anything about the REAL world with your made up WIRDS u fuckin liberal HIPPIE
I don’t know if it’s a feature of the Americanisation of tumblr but the rabid anti-vegan sentiment on here is just like… straight up wild. 20% of the UK are vegetarian and a third regularly use plant based milks. Most people I know in real life who are leftist or interested in social justice/the environment are at least trying to reduce their meat and dairy intake for environmental reasons if nothing else. But tumblr, which prides itself on its left leaning social justice activism, is full of people propping up the meat and dairy industries with the wildest and most ill-informed of takes. Like… being shit about vegans is the historical domain of conservatives and right wingers who like to eat streak dripping with the blood of millennial snowflakes, which is a viewpoint that at least has internal narrative consistency. People on tumblr spouting about how eating meat Is A Moral Good Actually in spite of every UN document and big official study that’s come out in the past five years is the funniest case of intentional ignorance / scientific illiteracy I’ve ever personally witnessed. Like, tell me you don’t read books and get all your info from social media hot takes without telling me etc.
One thing I am noticing is that the younger leftists arriving on the platform who haven’t been subject to the years of tumblr propaganda do not share this view. I see a lot of posts from young non-vegans along the lines of: ‘wait, why do we hate vegans?’ Many younger people seem to see it for the bizarre exercise in groupthink that it is.
Being vegan on Tumblr: When you’re a leftist but the Left lets you down.
People really do use that “100 companies cause 71% of emissions” and think that that apparently means that 71% of emissions could be eliminated without changing naything about our habits of consumption and how we engage with the world around us on a material basis.
It’s the same as people that say you should eat “humane, ethical” meat from small, local farms.
But if every single person did that it would be impossible for us to eat the amount of meat that we eat now so everyone would have to eat less anyway.
They conveniently forget that part. There’s a reason slaughterhouses and factory farms exist the way to they do. It’s not because people like to torture animals, it’s because YOU like to eat them 3 times day. It’s business. Factory farms and high speed slaughter exist to serve customers and make money.
If we wanted all the animals to have more space AND still eat the amount of animal products we eat now, we’d need at least one more planet Earth. Animal agriculture already takes up a huge amount of land, uses more crops, water, and energy than plant foods to produce, and is in part responsible for deforestation, habitat loss, Amazon rainforest destruction, ocean acidification leading to dead zones, pollution, and species extinction.
Even if you really believe there’s a right way to needlessly kill a sentient being for your own pleasure, you’d still have to eat animal products less if you only ate “humane” products. I would love to see anyone ACTUALLY do this. If you only ever ate animal products sourced from local farms, this means dairy, eggs, honey, gelatin, everything. That means you can’t buy prepackaged items if you don’t know where the ingredients are sourced.
Ironically, even if you’re super rich it’d STILL be easier to be vegan than to do that. But please, if you think it’s possible I challenge you to try it. Align your actions with your values.
If you ever tell anyone that killing animals needlessly for pleasure is morally ok because the animal had a nice life and a quick death, then prove it, and ONLY eat animal products procured that way. If that’s the only right way to do it, then buying them through any other method is immoral. Practice what you preach. We do.
A lack of butchers has resulted in the supply chain between farm and supermarket becoming blocked.
The farmer was reportedly ‘destroyed’ by it. That would be, destroyed by having to kill the pigs they raise specifically to be killed, but having to do it themselves rather than an underpaid labourer doing it for them. Of course they also had to kill them a few months early and didn’t make any money out of it.
"Vegans claim they're morally superior!"
The only people who claim vegans are morally superior are non vegans. I've literally never seen a vegan say that about themselves. Only non vegans.
“animals have to die anyways. they kill each other in nature. we need to kill animals to keep the population in check.” congratulations on your incredible observation, that still doesn’t make it okay to treat another living being as a commodity! and if u actually cared abt the ecosystem and natural balance of things u would boycott animal products out of the sheer principle that half of contiguous US land, stolen land, is used for raising livestock that are not even indigenous to this continent because we need to give that land back to who it belongs to instead of animal agriculture which is destroying the natural resources and biodiversity but yall just want to be performative and hate vegans for no reason
I think the hardest part of carnism is just the hypocrisy. Nearly 47,000 people and counting overjoyed that tHe PuPpErS will be saved from those evil dog-eaters in Asia. Yet the vast majority of them do the same thing to pigs, cows, and chickens but would be mortally offended by vegans pointing out that their violence against animals is no different.
So many people in the comments were trying to defend why western carnism is correct and normal but Korean carnism is wrong and icky. “B-b-but pigs were bred for food so it’s okay to kill them. Dogs were bred to be loving companions so they must be saved!” So torture and murder are justified as long as you do it to every generation of someone’s family for centuries. It’s also ignorant because dogs have been bred for food for generations in South Korea. Shouldn’t it be equally fair to promote more dog breeding so that violence against them becomes even more acceptable over time? The hypocrisy is so brazen.
Read the article here if you’re curious.
Also the racism is palpable.
here is your daily reminder that animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water and air pollution, and biodiversity loss, as well as the 2nd largest contributor to human-made greenhouse gas!!
