Arthur Vale Arthur is the oldest of the Vale family and recently moved back to New York City. Enjoys travelling and spent twelve years doing so. Loves animals and works as a zookeeper at Central Park Zoo.

           “Its because you have shitty taste in music, Art, always have.” Jack teased while giving the eldest Vale his best attempt at a warm smile; something that didn’t come all too easy these days. “Eh, the good beer is enough to sell me at this point so don’t worry yourself too much.”

“So I am frequently told, but the artists I like are called classic for a reason,” Arthur replied with a light chuckle, purposefully not talking about what Arthur was sure was on both their minds. “I wasn’t,” He joked. Despite his jovial manner there was clearly something missing from his usual cheerful self. “Come on, it’s just around the corner.”

“You always enjoy the quiet, Art.” And getting away from their family usually meant an abundance of silence would follow. She wasn’t still stuck on that but the thought crossed her mind right then and made her clear her throat. “Just…just water,” she said, sitting up a bit but not without some subtle struggle, legs not responding to her prompting as she used her upper strength to shuffle up on the bed. Kels was coming tomorrow. That’s the only thing that held the Vale together, the prospect of regaining at least some feeling in her otherwise damaged legs. They’d been sewn together, sure, but…everything had changed even if no one could see. Everything had changed and she was stuck like this.  

“I have very interesting thoughts,” Arthur replied. His sister's words were true, even as a young boy he enjoyed the quiet. Where some children might get bored or fidgety Arthur never did, quite content getting lost in his own thoughts.  Arthur stood up to grab the jug of water that was on the other side of the room. His instinct was to help Addison as she trying to sit up but knew better. It would be important for Addy to be as independent as possible, people helping her with every little thing would only bring her down even more. “Here you go,” He said, holding out a plastic cup of water to his sister, placing the jug down on her bedside cabinet so she could easily pour herself some more.

There had been so much loss in this city over the last year or so, there was no denying it. The humans had suffered the most, but it was clear they were not the intended targets. It was the supernatural community with the bulls  eye on it’s back -  and Luís’ family, and the  family of the shapeshifter  who had  joined him were  unfortunately part of that ever growing  community.  Both families had  suffered loss,  both knew how it felt to say goodbye to someone too early - and Luís knew that he too  would have offered his assistance had the  tables been turned. The Vales were the most peaceful of the ‘original’ families living in this city in his opinion, he believed the mans offer to be sincere. “Thank you. But I’m not even sure where to start myself now we’ve hit this dead end…. but I appreciate the offer.” 

Arthur understood how Luís was feeling, over the past year Arthur had often felt at a loss with what to do. First with Matt, then with Dylan and lastly with Devon. He wanted to find their murderer but didn’t even know where to begin. Thinking how much he had lost in such a short amount of time was always painful, but Arthur also understood how it was different for the Rhodes. For Arthur, it was just about justice, finding the culprit wouldn’t bring any of them back but the Rhodes stood a chance of finding their mother and bringing her back. That reason alone would have been enough for Arthur to offer his help and the help of his family. “I couldn’t think of a family better suited to finding her,” Arthur said honestly, hoping his words were of some comfort. “I can try putting some feelers out in the animal community. Having the ability to talk to animals has its perks.”

Harrison looked at the state of his hand and knew it was feeling better than previously, but it was still a huge pain to deal with till it fully healed. “ I broke it the other night when all of that happened. I’m not exactly a healing witch. “

“Hopefully it won’t take too long to heal,” Arthur replied, he could only imagine how frustrating it might be. Arthur was so thankful he had had vampire blood that night to help him heal, especially with Addison in hospital. The last thing his family would have needed is the both of them in hospital. “Perhaps you can find another witch to help the process along a little.”

“I’m glad you can make it. You’ve been so busy lately.” Rosalie responded to her brother. They both have though it was more of Rosalie keeping herself busy than helping with the Frey. “You helped though. I don’t know what I wouldn’t have done without your perfectly cracked eggs.” She joked with a soft laugh. It was nice to have a moment of what seemed like normalcy in all of this mess. “Do you want to take my car or yours?” The shifter asked as she picked up the basket that she was planning on using to carry all the apples in. Maybe she’d even make some French apple tarts if she had enough apples left over after the pies.

“It’s about time I started pulling my weight around here,” Arthur joked a little lamely. When he was younger Arthur always imagined himself helping to run the Frey, but then he left and his siblings stepped up. Now the Frey needed him Arthur was torn between working there permanently or going back to school. However, that was the least of his issues right now. “Your car is probably best seeing as mine is kind of temperamental, but then I did get it when I was seventeen,” He said, looking forward to spending some quality time with Rosie that didn’t involve the chaos that had taken over their lives.

How do you spend free time by yourself?Usually, I enjoy my free time more when I’m with others because I enjoy the company of others. I like to read - usually, I’ll be rereading some book written about King Arthur or travel journals. I also enjoy watching animal documentaries - especially if it involves David Attenborough. That man is my idol.

How would you describe a perfect date?Can I say the zoo even though I work there? I don’t like anything too fancy or complicated. Just something simple and fun. It’s the person you’re with that matters.

What’s your favourite time of day?I’ve always been a morning person, so I suppose the morning. 

What is your favourite season and why?Spring. The plants are coming through. The sun is shining and I get to witness numerous baby animals being born. 

What is your favourite tea and how do you take it?I’m not much of a tea drinker, I usually prefer coffee but when I do have it I like it black.

Addison’s head swam. The more she tried to keep her eyes open, the more they wanted to close but her brother’s voice was the only thing keeping her anchored– the only thing keeping her from drifting off. So she latched onto it. “R-right…right…” she repeated the word once, twice, three times before it lost it’s meaning. The light was going out again as blurred faces flooded her mind– her siblings, Kelsey, Hudson, her parents, those who’d tried and failed to help her now…tried and failed….just like Art would. He had to go somewhere safe but she couldn’t let go of him. Not now. Instead, the Vale nodded lazily. Blood loss from three areas caused everything to function slower and slower until she lost sight of his face and her head slumped back, eyes finally shutting as darkness rushed her. 

“No, no no no no no,” Arthur muttered, the words running into each other as Arthur watching Addison began to slip away. Tears were falling away as he tried desperately to wake Addison up. “Come on, Addy. Wake up. Please wake up,” Arthur pleaded. They’d just lost Devon and Arthur couldn’t lose another sister. He couldn’t just sit here and watch his sister die. Arthur stared at her body feeling hopeless, at a loss at what to do. He could still hear her gently breathing but they were getting noticeable slowly. Then he heard them, the sirens. Then came the sounds of voices accompanied by heavy footsteps. Arthur called out, yelling so loud his throat soon became hoarse but they heard. Stepping back so they could attend to Addison Arthur could only watch and hope it wasn’t too late.

Luís had spent the last several days abusing his clearance and authority at work to investigate the disappearance of his mom. He’d watched and re-watched the CCTV footage from that night. He had watched his mom get in her car, presumably heading to the hospital to check on her loved ones, and then…. nothing. The car vanishes. There one second gone the next. He had slammed the lid of his laptop down so hard he’d heard the screen crack, “It just doesn’t make sense. She was there, she was right there, then…. poof. Gone! Tell me, how does a car just disappear like that?” 

Arthur’s heart really went out to the Rhodes family. With everything that happened Arthur didn’t even want to think about how it must feel to also having to worry about a missing family member as well. It was bad enough worrying so much about his siblings at the moment. And for it to be some like Chrisjen - it was concerning, to say the least. “I wouldn’t have a clue where to start,” Arthur replied, wishing he could be of more help. “But if there’s anything my family can do to help you only have to ask.”

                  “Look — point me in any direction you want, as long as the place has decent beer and doesn’t play shitty music, alright?” Jack stated to the person who he had been drinking with for the passed hour; liquid courage or some shit. “We going or what?”

“I can guarantee the good beer, but most the places I know have shitty music,” Arthur responded with a slight shrug. “But then I don’t listen to almost anything that’s considered modern so that might be why I don’t like it.”

“Magic or no magic, my hand is sort of screwed for a while” Harrison replied looking at the state his hand was in. His own powers were more destructive than  healing and by the time he had managed to get help for himself he had managed to put him in a situation where his hand was going to be stuck with some pain for a while. “ So much for going to work for at least a week or two.”

“Sorry to hear that,” Arthur said genuinely, knowing how the other felt. For different reasons, Arthur had once needed to take time off work and hated not being with the animals at the zoo. I’m surprised I still have a job with the amount of time I’ve taken off,” Arthur joked lightheartedly, trying to keep spirits up like always. “What’s wrong with it? If you don’t mind me asking.”

Rosalie was trying her hardest to help her parents at the family home, since Addison had a major injury and Arthur was doing his best to watch over the Frey. She went over the entire list of ingredients for traditional apple pies and just needed the most important part. Of course, she didn’t want to just go to the store. She wanted to go out and get them herself. It was a relaxing process that she had done every year. A small smile came to her lips as she saw her brother. “I am doing fine with all things considered.” She said as she put on her coat. “I was just about to go apple picking. Do you want to come with me?” Rosalie asked her brother. Rosalie was needing a great deal of apples because she was wanting to try to make as many apple pies as she could for this holiday season to hopefully spread joy in the midst of this chaos. 

Arthur was about to turn down his sisters offer, looking down at all the work he had to do when he looked up. Looking her in the face he couldn’t say no and nodded, a small spreading across his lips. “That sounds great,” He said placing the papers down on the table where they would remain until later. “Although, are you sure you want my help. Those pumpkin pies we made would have been ruined if you hadn’t come to the rescue with your out of this world baking skills.” Arthur joked, trying to keep things happy despite how dire things had been the family lately.

She didn’t have an honest answer. Being left alone left her with too many questions, and a burning anger that seemed to rival those on her body. Having visitors left her questioning how much she could trust them; everything that spiralled in her life before the fire still played heavy on her mind. Lies on lies, and a complete uncertainty of what to believe anymore. But she wasn’t rude, Cinda had no idea why he might have thought to visit, but he’d done the same after Devon’s funeral, and somehow it seemed fitting. Or so she thought it did, until she nodded, and was reminded of what Teddy had told her about Devon and the Vale family. “Who else is here?” Someone else had to have been admitted, she wasn’t sure she’d be someone Arthur came here purely for. “is it still crazy out there?”

Arthur headed into the room after Lucinda gave him permission and took a seat next to her bed. He spent so much time sitting in the sitting in hospital chairs recently that he barely noticed how uncomfortable they were. “Oh, err, Addy is here. Recovering from an operation,” Arthur answered, his mind briefly flashing back to that night. He knew just how close he had been to watching his sister die. “The queues for the vending machine are ridiculously long but other than that things seem to have calmed down.” Arthur couldn’t help but feel a little awkward after all Lucinda had always just been Devon’s friend and now he was here visiting her because Devon couldn’t. Subconsciously he was trying to make up for hurting Devon by being there for her friend. “How are you doing?” Arthur asked genuinely. “Other than starving because of the hospital food.”

Everything ached more than Addison thought it could but nothing so much as information her parents had given her. Now hours had passed since she received the news and she’d since done nothing but sleep with a cocktail of painkillers and medications running through her system. It was easier than accepting the reality of their words. But one could only sleep for so long and even though she wished she wouldn’t right then, Addison started waking up, groggy with an aching head and neck. “Art.” She’d known he was okay from their parents but to actually see him for the first time since everything went dark was another thing. “C-can’t believe you let me sleep in.” A poor joke coming from the woman who, quite literally, never slept in? Probably but it was the first thing that came to mind because she didn’t know what else to say. Her brother could’ve died staying with her and she’d already lost one sibling too many. 

Arthur smiled slightly in response to Addy’s joke, understanding the need to lean on humour in order to cope. Arthur couldn’t imagine how Addison was feeling and if a lousy joke was what she needed to keep everything from overwhelming that he’d smile at as many crappy jokes that came. “I was enjoying the quiet,” He responded jokily when in all honesty he would have her talk constantly if that was possible. On that night when Addison had gone quiet and her eyes closed it was possibly the worst moment of Arthur’s life. Losing one sibling was bad enough, but to watch another go... that was unthinkable. “Can I get you something to drink or eat? There are some baked goodies from Rosie.”

Arthur had finally managed to persuade his parents to leave Addy’s side and grab something to eat that wasn’t a foul tasting sandwich brought to them from the cafeteria. Promising he wouldn’t leave her in their absence Arthur sat beside her bed as she slept, absentmindedly flicking through some magazine. Since that night Arthur had made himself as busy as possible. The only exceptions being when he visiting Addison or Rosie made him take a timeout. He still couldn’t believe everything this family had been through, and watching Addy sleep was a painful reminder that he almost lost a second sibling. Arthur hated that he hadn’t been able to help her more, and felt guilty that he hadn’t been able to save her leg despite knowing there was nothing he could have done. If had tried anything he might have simply made things worse. Hearing her begin to stir Arthur glanced up with a tentative smile, “Morning sleepy.”
