the beautiful collection:

a synthesis of artistic practice, mirror work and video journaling. I began video journaling as method of therapy to manage through a traumatic incident in my life. I was in search of ways to affirm to myself the beauty within the world, those around me and with in myself. The Beautiful Collection is a series of photographs and video segments of my personal conversation about beauty, being an African American women and my daily life. It is a collection of beautiful moments that represent my life and a sliver of the human experience.

The Beautiful Collection: a synthesis of artistic practice, mirror work and video journaling.  I define artistic practice as the  way I have incorporated art as part of my existence: creating art, living in an artful environment, practicing art, and yoga.  My artistic practice is reflected through cataloging photographs and video of various moments throughout my daily life interaction and environment.

The Beautiful Collection: What is mirror work?

In late 2013, artist Brianna McCarty and I were included in at least two "artists you need to know" listings. Huh...pretty sure that's how I was introduced to her work.  Regardless of the exact when or how I have been a fan of her artwork ever since. Yes, so much so... I took these screen shots and decided to share them. Her work also reminds me of the artwork of my close friend Jamea Richmond-Edwards. Both women are able to capture little slivers of Black women's spirit in their renderings. Looking at their artwork is like looking into the mirror...and seeing my reflection, my mother, niece, my best friend...ancestors past, present and future. I took this photo late 2013. Seeing this image again reminds of how brave I had to be that day. In the middle of an event I was attending I had call up my mother to hear her voice, her love and borrow just a pinch of her bravery and resilience.  I then went to the bathroom smiled...then laughed my fear away. This was truly a “Yes! You can!” Selfie. :0)
