“A’ight.” If that was the case, he wasn’t quite sure why an android wouldn’t just do their own repairs. But maybe he just wasn’t seeing the full picture.

Arachnid frowned lightly, and, slowly, after a moment’s consideration, he shook his head. “T’ tell ya the truth, I’d rather ya didn’t. I don’t really wanna know, one way or the other.” As far as he was concerned, it was better to just leave it to guessing or ignoring altogether. It wasn’t necessary information for survival here, and he couldn’t imagine a scenario where the information wasn’t in some way depressing.

“Anytime man, and just tell Omi you know Bolt,” he said and shrugged. “Bolt started uh… picking up mechanic work repairing any droids that managed to survive out here.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if any other settlements were like what’s over here, with a city an’ then a habitable zone around it.” Which would mean anyone was just as stuck where they were as anyone else would be anywhere else. And what was the point of even knowing, if that was the case?

“I didn’t know bomb makin’ an’ ‘droid repairs were transferable skillsets,” Arachnid said, only half joking.

Coutin’ me an’ Boo, yeah. But if we duck out... two or three people isn’t a lot, with the place as big as it is. My bigger concern is everything outside of repairs. The tasks switch hands between the same four or five of us, plus a few more when they’re feelin’ up to it, but it’s usually only two or three actually workin’ at a time.

It’s just not ideal.

“Yeah, her and a scientist friend are trying to figure something out,” he said and rubbed his face. “At the very least they wanna get stronger radio signals out, see if anywhere else survived.”

“Yeah, I get that. You’re always welcome here though, even if you just need shelter for the night. Although there us a chance some android named Omi will be around. They’re chill, just weirdly protective of Bolt.”

Scientist friend? Scientist friend singular didn’t sound all that more promising than just Bolt on her own trying to work something out, but, “Wish them luck, I s’pose.”

“I appreciate it.” And Boo probably would too, though Arachnid didn’t extend the gratitude on behalf of his brother. He shrugged a shoulder in response to the comment about the android. “Protective is fine.” Hell, it wasn’t like he himself wasn’t prone to his own bouts of over-protectiveness.

Flash shrugged. “Making explosives, selling explosives,” he said simply. Their life was simple, repetitive. It never went anywhere. “Bolt was thinking of trying to go beyond the zones, maybe look for somewhere else, completely free from BLI. I mean I think she’ll just get killed but… she’s the hopeful sort.”

“You should pop in more, Boo too. It would be nice to see a familiar face more than once a decade.”

“Not a great idea,” Arachnid offered in assessment. “There’s still some pretty nasty rad spots, even close in. An’ life starts t’ die of not long after the edge of Six.” As far as he knew, it was still rather touch and go, trying to move out into Zone Seven.

“I’ll pass that along. It’s hard t’ get out much, but we try every now an’ then, see old friends.”

“Laugh all you want Arachnid, it’s true,” he said and folded his arms. He looked over Arachnid quickly, raising his eyebrows. “I don’t exactly have much of a reason to lie.”

“Hey, it’s something. That’s still a lot better than what most of us are doing.”

Arachind shrugged. “I don’t exactly have the noblest of intentions.” Which wasn’t to say he didn’t care how things worked out for Rainyday. Because that wasn’t it at all. “I’ve been playin’ caretaker for a few years, now. An’ I’m just about burned out.” He’d be content to retire back into the life of solitude in the not-so-distant future.

“What about you an’ your sister? What have you two been up t’?”

Heh, I appreciate the offer, but that’s not quite what I meant.

I have t’ teach skills. It’s a big place, an’ old. Stuff breaks. Right now, there’re only four or five of us who can do a lot of those repairs. An’ there’s the day-t’-day care rituals, an’ the garden. I just need time. An’ preferably for my brother t’ drag himself back out of whatever hole he’s hidin’ in an’ start pullin’ some more weight again.

“Cool, I’ll pass that on to Bolt, she’s a worrier,” Flash said with a light laugh. It was the understatement of the year. “Hey, when a handsome guy disappears, people talk. You’re noticeable.”

“You’re what, making a self sustaining colony? That sounds amazing.”

That got a proper chuckle out of Arachnid, coupled with a shake of his head. “Sure.” Noticeable, he’d take, if for no other reason than height alone. But handsome? Yeah right.

“Not a colony. Just a group that set up in an old asylum.” Enough people to keep it going without putting too much strain on any one person, but still small enough that they shouldn’t draw too much outside attention.
