I live for your doodles of Orion and Garret, they bring me such joy. And I love the doodle and color palette for it! Do you have any AU’s on how they would interact irl? Or have a university/college AU for them? What would Garret study if he was a student? Would Orion be interested in studying in the medical or engineering fields?
Ohohoho..... there are plenty of AUs.
Many of them nobody is privy to except me and my editor/best friend L (no death note relation), because the AUs are too revealing of the nature of the actual comic (and I would much rather show you the comic than a spoiler heavy au doodle). But I must admit I am very not interested in university AUs on their own. I very much think of the characters as adults first, even if they are young adults, so I like putting them in employment (or at least part-time jobs as they mauver the late stage independent uni life). If uni comes into play, Orion is most often doing either IT or engineering, while Garret attends a literature oriented course or creative writing. There are two, let's say, normalcore AUs that find their strength not in the narrative they tell, but in the potential to showcase an angle of the characters that is not usually touched upon.
The one in question is something L and I offhandedly call the shopping mall au, though it's not about the shopping mall at all. The basic premise is that due to reasons (whether it'd be a no-clock world, or Orion still attending uni) Orion is working a minimum wage job at a Tesco or, god forbid, a fast food place. It's a pretty fun sandbox of an AU. How does Orion, who (originally in TCM proper) is a very privileged and ignorant individual employed at his mom's studio, handle adversity of a spill in aisle 4? How does he cope with frustrations of his 9-5? What are the personality traits that make Orion Orion beyond the surface level sentiment of "I love coding"? In the same vein it's fun to imagine Garret in a similar position. In this particular AU he's employed at a LUSH (soaps/bathbombs), which presents his own set of circumstances for him.
If you've ever seen any doodle of Orion and Garret smoking you can be 99.9% certain it's the shopping mall au. Canonically neither Orion nor Garret smoke on the reg; Orion because he's a medic conscious of the consequences, and Garret because he's got no means of purchasing them.

Hi! I'm not sure if someone asked already... We know the characters are Polish. Are the events taking place in alternative or futuristic Poland then? Or is it a fictionalised country all together? Is there a particular city the location is based on? I tried to look up on google maps some cities that lie on the shore of Poland and can't say any of the ones I looked at have a particular resemblance (but what do I know, I've never been to Poland, though would love to visit!) (specifically, tried to find a combo of similar ish sidewalk next to the shore + no forest adjacent to the beach + canals in town + similar style of building as the one in the panel where Garret crosses a bridge) The architecture looks so beautiful so I was wondering if there is a city which served as inspiration for the place where we lay our scene 👀🤔
Hi! Ohoho what a fun fun question! The world present in the Clockmaster is fictionalised and that's how I would like people to perceive it. However, simultaneously, the fiction is, to a degree, informed by real life. While I do occasionally refer to the characters as "Polish", they're more.... culturally Polish-esque/European, rather than actively living in real life Poland.
The actual country the characters live in is distinct from Poland in many ways, especially geographically. The north of the country (briefly discussed in chapter 4 when the parents come back) generally takes inspiration from the northern part of Europe, being naturally a colder region, with rocky beaches and cliffsides. The particular inspiration for the cliffs were the 7 Sisters located near Brighton, UK. I used to live there for a period of my life, and, ah, I love pulling on locations from real life, and those cliffs were spectacular. I visited them multiple times. The city of Nadmorze is located in the south of the country and its name is a little nod to the real life Polish city of Kołobrzeg (literally meaning "near-shore" to Nadmorze's "by-the-sea"), the implication being that its somewhat of a touristy spot, especially in the summer. However, the architectural inspiration for it pulls from Mediterranean countries such as Croatia and Italy, and also European cities such as Amsterdam. I love travelling in region when I get the chance, and taking tons of reference photos of building and little alleyways. I find some architectural solutions downright bizarre and that's what makes them so fascinating to me! Like look at this tightest alleyway..... that ends in this? Protruding staircase?! Fantastic!
I think that part of my fascination with both of these regions comes from the fact that I come from central Poland where much of the historical architecture has been ravaged by world wars, and carries some leftovers of communism. But! I still want to include some of the more beautiful parts of Poland too! The marketplace that Garret visits in chapter 5 takes inspiration from marketplaces in my hometown!
I love passing the one with flowers, its not shown in the photo but there's a little spot with a tree and a bench and you can just sit and chill there for a bit, it's very nice. I find it beyond entertaining to include tiny little signifiers of my own culture in the comic that other Polish people would be able to recognize, such as Orion visiting a Poczta Polska in ch1 (the post office) or someone reading Sienkiewicz, just a little wink and a nod between me and the other 3 Polish people reading this comic. But the characters of The Clockmaster definitely do not live in Poland as we know it in real life :) Still, they're "Polish" in my heart ❤️

Haaaaaaa interesting question I must admit! Now have I considered them in a kcd setting specifically where they ride around Bohemia, no. But there is a medieval au sandbox me and my best bud played around in plenty. Depending on what hypothetical story the world is meant to serve and what characters could be seen in it, the generalised idea is that Orion is an alchemist/scholar before he is anything else. Sometimes a nobleman, an heir to a duchy (never ever a prince) with interests at odds with his family's interest, sometimes simply a rich educated commoner from a bustling town. Both of these allow for fun stories with relatively high stakes, but not so high they become intangible and impersonal ("naurr im a prince... the fate of the nation... yada yada.") Garret on the other hand is usually [redacted][redacted][redacted][somehow saying anything feels like I'm cryptically alluding to the events of The Clockmaster and I can't be spoiling it like that][redacted][redacted]. But there is of course an eternal charm to the unlikely duo being forced to work together, never gets old!
