Richie was in the middle of class, sitting in the very back like he always did. He was about to start writing in his school notebook, before he heard Miss Mulberry call his name.

"Richard Lipschitz, you're gonna be sent home early," she said, as a teenager, someone around his age, leaned against the doorway. It seemed like whoever they were was the one who was getting him out of school. But why?

Richie glanced over at the doorway. Who even was that? He didn’t know them. Something vaguely recalling stranger danger screamed in the back of his head, as he slowly gathered his equipment. He wasn’t sure what was going on here.

Stepping out of the classroom, he couldn’t help but give the person a side-eye.

Paris walked along with Richie down the school halls. "Hi. I'm Paris. Paris Reyes," they spoke, introducing themselves. "Your Uncle Paul sent me to pick you up; he apparently has a coffee date with a barista somewhere."

Richie did his best to keep his distance from the stranger. He tried to keep his body neutral, but he was not being subtle. Can other teenagers kidnap teenagers? Is that a thing? He wasn’t sure. He would hope not. “..That’s such a weak excuse to kidnap me.” He mumbled. Are all kidnappers stupid?

His legs picked up his pace.

“He wouldn’t pull me out of class early, and I don’t— I don’t exactly live with him. I still have a dad. If you’re planning to kill me or something, could you at least be honest?”

Paris sighed. This guy was smart. They weren't gonna kidnap him, but there was a reason they got him out of class earlier than everyone else.

They looked behind them, making sure the halls were empty, before grabbing Richie's arm to stop him from moving away. Time to cut the act. "Look. I'm only trying to help," they whispered. "Hatchetfield High in the next few seconds is fucked. Trust me, I know."

Ethan was working somewhere in his father's car shop, his hands rough and calloused as he focused on repairing somebody's car. He was about to get up to grab a snack, when he spotted someone, a teenager, standing in the garage door.

"This place open?"

[It's been a while since he last helped out with his pops, but now that he's back in Hatchetfield, he figured he should work here again for that extra cash. He notices the teen standing there for who knows how long]

As long as the garage is open, the shop's open. Anything you need to fix?

The teenager walked in the shop, pulling in a motorcycle into the driveway. "I know this place is for cars, but is there any way you could maybe fix up the engine of this thing? I need to go somewhere in a few hours," they reply.

Oh, a motorbike! I'm sure I can fix that. I own a bike myself, anyways. Though, you're gonna have to wait a little longer than a few hours because I'm still not done with this one yet.

"I've been living here my whole life," Paris chuckled, taking a seat somewhere nearby. "I was born near the Witchwood, so that's probably why you didn't see me."

"Hm... I think I am! Usually, anyway. I'm an aspiring investigator, so I'm always popping up in the most random places."

"Well... I've seen other timelines and universes and try to prevent horrible events from happening, I've died multiple times, and uh..." They paused to think. "Oh, and I've killed multiple people. Any questions?"

Paris was somewhere in Hatchetfield. Or, was.

They were visiting the United States for another mission. Still, they worked for no one, only for themselves and their theories, and they still hadn't been taken seriously as a real investigator. Some things never changed, they supposed.

Right now, Paris was sitting in a vintage style restaurant, eating from their plate slowly. God, they were tired. The whole day before then was spent looking for clues on whatever they were looking into. Paris loved that part of their 'job,' but it was still tiring nonetheless.

Ding!

They snapped out of their thoughts when a man walked through the restaurant entrance. They squinted. Have they seen this guy before, or were they crazy?

It’s been four years, and Curt’s meant to be in Budapest by tomorrow.

But he’s still in The States for now, going through the last day of being a typical civilian until he got back into his career. Back to being a spy. The man he was supposed to be. A hand reached up and itched at the underside of his beard. It’s been easier to merely grow in a beard so he can look at himself in the mirror, pretend it was someone else staring back. It was easier than seeing the man, the face, that killed his partner.

He’s stepping into some restaurant, somewhere he’s been once or twice. It didn’t really matter to him. He just wanted a nice meal, instead of moping around like the rest of the week.

Paris raised a brow. This guy has a beard, it couldn't be who they thought this guy was. But then again, things change when time passes.

Curiosity won Paris' mind, as they walked over to the man, squinting. "Excuse me?" They tapped his shoulder.

Curt turns, eyes focusing on the other in-front of him. His eyes stared, before recognition washed over him. Eyebrows slowly raised. “Paris?” He questioned. He didn’t exactly expect to see them. Admittedly, he briefly forgot about them. He had.. Other things on his mind in the last four years.

“Jesus, you’ve changed.” He mumbled, eyes taking in their face. Paris has seemed to have grown a bit, in the time he hasn’t seen them.

Paris' eyes widened. It was him.

"Curt...?" They muttered, surprised at seeing the man after so long. Mega now sported a beard, and his hair was a bit longer. He looked the same, but... Also different. Paris supposed they changed too, though. More scars littered their body, and half of their face was burnt. "God... I haven't seen you in a while," they add, their voice quiet.

“Paris Reyes.” Curt repeated their name, now fully, with more confidence.

“Didn’t think I would see you again. Which, I’m glad for. Means you haven’t got into too bad of trouble.” His eyes skirted away from the sight of burns. Curt couldn’t look at those, reminded him of someone else and it had his hands itching for a drink. “How have you been? Anything new?”

"Curt Mega," Paris smiled, saying his name back at him. It was really nice seeing the Agent again.

"I've been... Ok. People still don't see me as a real investigator, but I'm improving," they chuckled. "I stole a whole arsenal of weapons from a corrupt agency and transferred it to the Hatchetfield Police Department this week."

“You gave more weapons to the police..?” Curt gave them an odd look. He didn’t seem to approve on that idea. But, he won’t comment on that part further. “Congratulations, hope you haven’t gotten more enemies with that. Seeing as how some people may be..”

Paris shrugged. "They paid me for it. Besides, if they try anything, I have an arsenal of my own," they laughed.

They paused, thinking. Did they make enemies? Maybe. "Hmm... I don't think so. Well, a mob of men with knives tried to stab me last time, but I managed."

Curt nodded slightly. “..Don’t go killing random people. Only within reason.”

His hands shuffled to rest in his pockets. “They didn’t get you, right? Not even a little nick of a knife?”

Paris nodded. "Noted. I've learned some things from you along the years, anyway," they smiled.

"Nope," they replied. "They did kick me pretty hard, and they did inject me with a needle, but I heard it just had water in it. So I'm fine."

“I don’t have anything good to teach you. I never do. Don’t take much of my advice.” Curt didn’t need Paris following in his footsteps and nowhere close. His eyes glanced even more away, disapproval scribbled on his face. His eyes take a liking to some random object in the restaurant they stood in.

Oh, right. Public place.

“Let’s sit down in a booth, don’t need anyone overhearing this conversation.” A hand grabs their arm lightly, before beginning to lead to some vague booth. He didn’t care if it was reserved for someone or if it was actually empty.

“Even if it was water, still dangerous. It just depends on where it’s injected. I think.” He gave a brief shrug. “That’s nerd shit, but good to heed their warnings.”

Paris raised a brow.

'Don't take much of my advice.'

It sounded quite negative to them. Something must've happened in those four years Curt was gone... But Paris wouldn't ask about it.

Sitting in the booth, they nod. "Well, I think I felt a bit light-headed getting home that evening..." They mumbled, playing with a fork that was left on the table. "But the next day I was alright again, so that's good, I guess."

Curt slowly sat.

“That’s to be expected.” He mumbled, adjusting his suit jacket slowly while a hand scratched at a small part of his beard. God, he didn’t even like his own beard. Always felt so scratchy.

“At least you’re okay by now, even if it was ages ago.”

Paris smiled. "Yeah... I've been doing ok. How about... You?" They mutter, looking up at Mega with curious eyes. They chuckle. "Nice beard, though. It looks good on you."

“I’ve been..”

Curt couldn’t help but trail off. How was he doing? Besides being out of the field, he hasn’t really done much. He’s been alive. Around. But has he really been living? That’s why he was going back to spying.

“I’ve been out of the field for a while. Getting back to it tomorrow. Short retirement.” He vaguely answered, getting comfortable in the booth. “But, you like the beard? Thanks.”

Paris nodded. Maybe that's why they hadn't crossed paths in the past four years... A short hiatus from the spy status made sense. Still, they sensed something... Else happened.

"Oh, so like, you took a short time away from the spy business? That's good to hear," they say instead. Paris didn't want the conversation to get awkward by asking bluntly if something other than what Curt told them happened. This was their first time seeing each other in four years. It'd be rude.

"And yes, I do like the beard," they add with a smile.

Curt’s hands itched for a drink. He already had his flask packed away for his flight later tonight, so he didn’t have that on him.

He idly glanced down at his hands, as they rested on the table. Briefly glancing over his nails, noting he should trim them. Should he trim his beard? No, he wouldn’t dare touch that. Bad idea. “No, not willingly. Cynthia forced me to take a break.” He mumbled. “Or— Well, my boss. She’d have my head if she knew I just used her name.” It’s paired with a light laugh, not being too serious about it.

Paris chuckled. "Cynthia, your boss, huh?" They tapped their wrist. "She sounds strict already. Or, y'know... It's probably just policy for your spy thing," they shrugged.

Noticing how fidgety Curt was, Paris stood up. "Hang on a minute," they muttered, before quickly getting a drink for the both of them. They sensed he needed one right now. For what reason, they didn't know, but it'd help, they guessed.

"Here," they push a glass to Mega. "Drink up. I have a feeling you wanna take a shot," they smile slightly.

“Make sure you aren’t off your guard around her. She’s very sharp.” He briefly shrugged. “And, it’s a mix of both.”

Curt’s mouth opened, as if asking where they’d go, before Paris is gone from the table. It wasn’t long but.. He merely waited, glancing around the restaurant idly. Watching more happier people enjoy meals.

When Paris returned, he took the glass. He raised an eyebrow. “I appreciate it. I can tell you still haven’t drank much, because this isn’t a shot glass. Just a proper glass. What’d you order, anyway?” But he lifted the glass to his lips, taking a slow drink out of it.

Paris chuckled. "Just some vodka... A bit of beer too, in case you don't like that kinda stuff," they shrugged. "I'm not too interested in drinking alcohol, even if I am already nineteen. I still like those packs of juice you get at parties and stuff, typical me, I guess," they laughed.

Curt downed the awful concoction, feeling it taste absolutely horrendous. His body stiffened, putting down the glass slowly. “Jesus.” He whispered, before turning away to briefly cough. “You— How did you even order this?” He pat a hand lightly at his own chest as his coughing subsided. “The drinking age is twenty one here in The States.”

Paris smiled. "I'm friends with the bartender here," they explained. "She helps me on my investigations sometimes, too. She has this awesome motorcycle."

“She could be fined for serving alcohol to a minor and the business could be shut down as it occurred in these premises. Don’t get caught.” Curt mumbled, before deciding to down the rest of the concoction in the glass anyway. His hands then idly fidgeted with the glass.

Paris gave him a thumbs up and a grin. They still looked like how they did when they were younger; goofy, mischievous, risking everything for an adventure. It reminded Curt of the simpler times, back when his partner was still alive and when Paris was always messing with him.

"Noted," they nodded. "You want another drink-?" They ask, seeing Curt fidget with the empty glass. Already, they were grabbing the bottle of vodka and opening the lid.

Curt tried to ignore his thoughts, they way they were drudging up old memories. Of the man he was four years ago, the better version of himself. The man that didn’t cause a loved one’s demise. That he was still one of the greatest spies in the world.

His eyes glanced down at the table.

If he wasn’t being reminded with memories and maybe a better version of himself, Curt might’ve scolded Paris for the alcohol they were now handling. But he’s gone quiet, staring down at the table anyway. He gives the smallest of nods.

Paris frowns. Something was wrong... Maybe Curt was thinking about things he wasn't fond of thinking about. They quickly pour more alcohol into his cup, sliding it to him. "Look, I don't know... what happened exactly, but I hope you can recover. You're a good guy. Whatever you did was for the best, I'm sure," they say quietly, smiling as they pat Curt's shoulder.

Curt took back his glass, not taking long to drink it up. The familiar burn in his throat was comforting. A constant in his ever-changing life. His eyes briefly shut, taking about a minute before he’s opening his eyes again. His eyes have softened, dragged down by the weight of grief. His shoulders slump now, leaning forward slightly and letting his body lean against the table.

“Let’s talk about something else, Paris.” Even if there wasn’t a specific topic they had been talking about.

Paris watched as Curt drank, and as his body relaxed. They nod at his words. "Yeah, sure... Of course. Hm..." They paused, thinking. "Well, I am starting one of my first big investigations... It's on a spy agency too."

A brief spike of unease sparked inside Curt, but it’s extinguished slowly as he drank. “..Care to indulge me on what that might be? Not going after ASS or M16, are you?” He questioned. “Or are you not allowed to tell me what the investigation is?”

"No, not the ASS or whatever the other one was," Paris shook their head. "It's a company called..." They took a moment to look through some files they had in their bag.

"Chimera."

No recognition shimmered in Curt’s eyes. It wasn’t the point in time where he was meant to know, after all. But, in the next few days he’ll find out about them plenty. He didn’t seem interested in them now.

He even rolled his eyes.

“Some country’s agency, probably some nerdy shit. More scientists than agents, I’ll imagine.” He waved it off. “I don’t want to know anymore, actually.”

Paris nodded, keeping the documents. "I'll just say that I heard about them after my friend went missing... It seems the events are connected, somehow... I just have to find out everything about these sons of bitches."

“It’s a spy agency. You’ll find nothing on them. You were lucky to find out about me, when we first met. I’d suggest you just drop the investigation on them and find something that’ll earn you real shown efforts.” Curt tried to encourage. He didn’t want Paris snooping around places they shouldn’t. Sure, not his agency and shouldn’t worry. But, he didn’t want Paris getting hurt by professionals in his career path.

Paris nodded, listening to Curt speak. The past few weeks, nothing had turned up on Chimera, so they supposed he had a point. But they'd keep trying. They were stubborn like that.

"Hm... I'll think about it," they reply. "Cutting investigations takes me a bit," they chuckled. "But I'll keep it in mind. Thanks."

Curt doubted Paris would find anything about a spy agency. That was the point, after all. Spy agencies are secretive. If any normal civilian could find them, then what’s the point of existing?

“Good luck on that, kid. But I’d say cut your losses now. Don’t have to listen to me, however.”

Paris nodded. It was highly unlikely that they'd find anything about a spy agency, and they knew that very well. But who's gonna stop them from trying?

"Thanks," they give Curt a thumbs up. Clearing their throat, they move on to talk about some other topic. "You going on a mission tomorrow, or something?" They ask.

“I am. Budapest or something. Simple in and out, one little item.” Curt mentioned, rolling the bottom of his glass against the table idly. “Nothing I can’t handle, really. Pretty easy stuff.”

He paused, before immediately adding. “Do not follow me.” He knew they wouldn’t, but.. He had to be sure.

"Budapest, huh? Sounds interesting," Paris hummed, tapping their fingers on the table.

At Curt's comment, they laughed, raising their hands in surrender. "Hey, I'm not always gonna crash at your missions. Trust."

“It’s not, really. I’ve been there before. Nothing great there.” It’s a sore spot, really. Curt would love anywhere but there.

“I don’t want you to suddenly get some investigation in Budapest, so you can see me. That’s all. I still need to do my job.”

Paris chuckled. "Well, you did say 'nothing great' is there, so I won't intrude," they hummed. "Besides, almost all of my investigations are in Hatchetfield. A lot of secrets in my town, apparently."

“Keep a small-town investigator to a small town. It’s good.” Curt didn’t want them to experience the worst parts of life in bigger places and cities. “Enough for you to deal with, stick to that place.”

Paris nodded. "Sure, sure. Hatchetfield's already a..." They sighed. "A handful. I mean, relatively it's a nice place to live, but there's so many weird shit that happens there that I have yet to solve. Even if I've seen other timelines there's just some things I don't know yet."

Curt just skirts around the topic of timelines. He’s not the man that can accurately talk in that topic. His aching heart might entertain silly ideas, too.

“I haven’t even been to that town more then once. The place doesn’t attract much spy attention. Too weird for us, I guess.” He tried to laugh, but he wasn’t really feeling it. “I’m glad you can live somewhere so safe. It sounds nice.”

"Yeah, it can be when it wants to," Paris chuckled. "Hatchetfield is a mix of 'safest place in the world' and 'get the fuck outta there', if y'know what I mean."

Curt nodded, even if he didn’t understand that. The safest place he knew was his Mother’s, which he bought for her. So it could act as a safehouse. Which, god, he didn’t visit her frequently enough. But will that ever change? No. Curt rarely changed in his life.

His hands continued to fidget with his glass.

“..I feel like we’re running out of conversation here.” He mumbled out, eventually.

Paris hummed, nodding with a sigh of a laugh. "Yeah, hah... I guess it's been so long since we last had a conversation, huh?" They mumbled.

They paused for a moment. "Not that it matters, but... I kinda missed you," they say quietly.

“I’d joke, say I’ve never been good at a conversation. But, that’s part of my job.” Curt paused, before awkwardly adding on. “..That I’m returning to tomorrow, after a four year break.” He let silence hang in the air, before Paris eventually spoke. His eyes finally blinked at them, taking in the scarring that they had.

Finally staring at them in the eyes.

“You missed me?” There’s a pause, as his face twisted into confusion. Then, slowly, an odd look of disappointment. “I don’t see why you’d would. Sorry— I really don’t.”

Paris sighed with a sad smile. "Well... I guess it's just for a silly reason. When I first met you, I... I got attached, I think. Saw you as a 'father'... Hah. I don't get why, actually."

Yikes. Curt didn’t realise how much he meant to this person. Paris was.. A good person. A good investigator. But.. Jesus, they haven’t really gotten to know eachother much. They’ve encountered maybe— What, four times? Maybe more? He can’t recall the specific number. He did care for them, he really did. But the jump of being seen as a potential father figure?

“I’ve never planned to have kids.” He awkwardly commented. “And I didn’t think I’d become much of figure to anyone.”

His eyes finally break away from staring at Paris. “..I think I get what my mother means about my own behaviour now, about being with a father. I can see it in you. It’s.. Interesting, to say the least.”

"Huh..." Paris mumbled, thinking over his words. They smiled. "That's a start, then, I guess," they shrugged.

"I know we only encountered, like, five or so times before, but... That was enough to me hoping to see you whenever I went on another mission," they mumbled, their hand picking at their skin. "My father died shortly after I was born, and my mother... Well, she left. Maybe that's also why I sorta got attached to Ms. Mega. She- and... And you, were the only people remotely close to being actual parents. To me, at least."

“That’s the opposite of what I want you to think. I don’t want you hoping I’m around while you’re on some mission. That I’ll be around. That’s not how it’s supposed to go.” Curt’s lips curved downwards into a slow smile.

Maybe if he knew Paris longer and more then as just an investigator, he’d care for their life and sob story. Maybe it’s a bit rude, to not care about some dead father and a disappearing mother. Maybe the comment about his mother rubbed him the wrong way. “Don’t. Don’t comment about her about that and me in the same sentence.”

He felt bad for Paris. Extremely bad. But also a bit awkward. Did Paris really have no people outside of him, to develop such a view? No friends? No distant relatives..?

Curt’s just a spy. He shouldn’t be anything else.

Paris was silent, thinking. They knew very well Curt shouldn't matter to them as much as he did, but really, could they help it? They were just a kid, after all. And in their eyes, they still were, even as a fully grown adult. They weren't lying when they said they saw Mega as a father figure in their life.

And maybe he still was. Even now, after so long.

"Sorry," Paris cleared their throat. "Hah... It really is ridiculous, isn't it? I guess it's just the response I can give. I had nothing else."

“You can keep thinking like that. I don’t really mind. Just.. Don’t call me dad. I think that’s a bit weird.”

A hand rubbed at the back of Curt’s neck. “I do care about you, enough to not want you dead and want you to live a good life.” And he still saw Paris as that young kid, long ago. But he still saw them as that, despite the visible growing. Why? Besides his emotions, it was mainly because he hasn’t seen them in four years. His brain considered Paris a bit of a stranger. Even if they were like that, before four years of never seeing them.

“I don’t think I’d be good at something like that, anyway. I wouldn’t settle down. I don’t think I could. I never could.”

"Don't worry. No weird nicknames," Paris reassured.

Silence. They hadn't heard anything about Curt caring about them before. Well, maybe it passed in other conversations before, but it was short lived. This was... Sorta different. It was enough to make Paris tear up. Just a little bit.

They quickly wiped their eyes. "That's the expectancy of an agent, right?" They let out a small laugh. "I don't expect you to."

“I’ve got different expectations on my shoulders, compared to most.”

This was getting tool mushy-feelings for his liking. He didn’t deal with this. Curt set the glass down onto the table, before his hands pushed against the surface to slowly stand. He didn’t look at Paris.

“I’d love to stay and chat more, but I’ve got a flight to catch in a few hours. I need to finish packing the last of my belongings before I get to the airport. I don’t mean to cut the conversation short.” He lied, but which part he couldn’t exactly be honest about that. All of it, probably. “You don’t mind if I leave so abruptly?”

Paris looked up at Curt as he stood. Right. He had a mission to attend to, and they did too.

They weren't gonna lie, it kinda stung to know Mega was leaving again. Paris wouldn't know when they'd see him again, and it really did hurt. But they couldn't change anything about it, even if they tried. They'd just get in the way. Like always.

Paris shook their head, standing up too. "No, you're good. I have to get back to my investigation anyway."

A pause.

"Can I just... Say one last thing? Before we part ways again?"

Curt was always meant to leave, disappear back to his career. He wasn’t anything if he wasn’t a spy. He’s just destined to be a spy, forever. Until he died. He couldn’t think of being anything else.

“I do want you to stay safe, Paris. If there was any safe way to keep in contact, I would but.. You know how this life works. That just isn’t possible, without putting people in danger.” He mentioned, hoping to make the potential ache in the other’s heart. If it did t all. He was just.. Leaving, again. “I guess you could consider me an absent father figure.” A brief, short-lived laugh escaped his lips and it ended in an awkward sigh.

“..Yeah, shoot. I’m all ears.”

Paris was silent for a bit. The idea of Curt leaving again... It weighed on their heart. But then again, he was a spy. Paris wasn't.

And spies are forever.

They'd live on, seeing Mega from every perspective, every point of view, every timeline. It wasn't something they could control, anyway. But none of them could compare to the Curt standing in front of them, even if he wasn't the same man from four years ago.

After a few more beats of silence, Paris enveloped the Agent in a tight hug.

"Thank you. For everything."

That was all they said. A handshake to an old friend. A bittersweet farewell to a loved one.

The warmest hello to the coldest goodbye.

They'd never see each other again, and Paris knew that well. So pathetically, they hoped this conveyed enough emotion to show Curt just how much they cared. If it didn't, then oh well. There wasn't a 'next time' anymore, after all.

But it was worth a shot. And it would be, always.

Paris was somewhere in Hatchetfield. Or, was.

They were visiting the United States for another mission. Still, they worked for no one, only for themselves and their theories, and they still hadn't been taken seriously as a real investigator. Some things never changed, they supposed.

Right now, Paris was sitting in a vintage style restaurant, eating from their plate slowly. God, they were tired. The whole day before then was spent looking for clues on whatever they were looking into. Paris loved that part of their 'job,' but it was still tiring nonetheless.

Ding!

They snapped out of their thoughts when a man walked through the restaurant entrance. They squinted. Have they seen this guy before, or were they crazy?

It’s been four years, and Curt’s meant to be in Budapest by tomorrow.

But he’s still in The States for now, going through the last day of being a typical civilian until he got back into his career. Back to being a spy. The man he was supposed to be. A hand reached up and itched at the underside of his beard. It’s been easier to merely grow in a beard so he can look at himself in the mirror, pretend it was someone else staring back. It was easier than seeing the man, the face, that killed his partner.

He’s stepping into some restaurant, somewhere he’s been once or twice. It didn’t really matter to him. He just wanted a nice meal, instead of moping around like the rest of the week.

Paris raised a brow. This guy has a beard, it couldn't be who they thought this guy was. But then again, things change when time passes.

Curiosity won Paris' mind, as they walked over to the man, squinting. "Excuse me?" They tapped his shoulder.

Curt turns, eyes focusing on the other in-front of him. His eyes stared, before recognition washed over him. Eyebrows slowly raised. “Paris?” He questioned. He didn’t exactly expect to see them. Admittedly, he briefly forgot about them. He had.. Other things on his mind in the last four years.

“Jesus, you’ve changed.” He mumbled, eyes taking in their face. Paris has seemed to have grown a bit, in the time he hasn’t seen them.

"Curt...?" They muttered, surprised at seeing the man after so long. Mega now sported a beard, and his hair was a bit longer. He looked the same, but... Also different. Paris supposed they changed too, though. More scars littered their body, and half of their face was burnt. "God... I haven't seen you in a while," they add, their voice quiet.

“Paris Reyes.” Curt repeated their name, now fully, with more confidence.

“Didn’t think I would see you again. Which, I’m glad for. Means you haven’t got into too bad of trouble.” His eyes skirted away from the sight of burns. Curt couldn’t look at those, reminded him of someone else and it had his hands itching for a drink. “How have you been? Anything new?”

"Curt Mega," Paris smiled, saying his name back at him. It was really nice seeing the Agent again.

"I've been... Ok. People still don't see me as a real investigator, but I'm improving," they chuckled. "I stole a whole arsenal of weapons from a corrupt agency and transferred it to the Hatchetfield Police Department this week."

“You gave more weapons to the police..?” Curt gave them an odd look. He didn’t seem to approve on that idea. But, he won’t comment on that part further. “Congratulations, hope you haven’t gotten more enemies with that. Seeing as how some people may be..”

Paris shrugged. "They paid me for it. Besides, if they try anything, I have an arsenal of my own," they laughed.

They paused, thinking. Did they make enemies? Maybe. "Hmm... I don't think so. Well, a mob of men with knives tried to stab me last time, but I managed."

Curt nodded slightly. “..Don’t go killing random people. Only within reason.”

His hands shuffled to rest in his pockets. “They didn’t get you, right? Not even a little nick of a knife?”

"Nope," they replied. "They did kick me pretty hard, and they did inject me with a needle, but I heard it just had water in it. So I'm fine."

His eyes glanced even more away, disapproval scribbled on his face. His eyes take a liking to some random object in the restaurant they stood in.

“Let’s sit down in a booth, don’t need anyone overhearing this conversation.” A hand grabs their arm lightly, before beginning to lead to some vague booth. He didn’t care if it was reserved for someone or if it was actually empty.

“Even if it was water, still dangerous. It just depends on where it’s injected. I think.” He gave a brief shrug. “That’s nerd shit, but good to heed their warnings.”

His body stiffened, putting down the glass slowly. “Jesus.” He whispered, before turning away to briefly cough. “You— How did you even order this?” He pat a hand lightly at his own chest as his coughing subsided. “The drinking age is twenty one here in The States.”

Paris smiled. "I'm friends with the bartender here," they explained. "She helps me on my investigations sometimes, too. She has this awesome motorcycle."

Paris gave him a thumbs up and a grin. They still looked like how they did when they were younger; goofy, mischievous, risking everything for an adventure. It reminded Curt of the simpler times, back when his partner was still alive and when Paris was always messing with him.

Curt took back his glass, not taking long to drink it up. The familiar burn in his throat was comforting. A constant in his ever-changing life. His eyes briefly shut, taking about a minute before he’s opening his eyes again. His eyes have softened, dragged down by the weight of grief. “You missed me?” There’s a pause, as his face twisted into confusion. Then, slowly, an odd look of disappointment. “I don’t see why you’d would. Sorry— I really don’t.”

Paris sighed with a sad smile. "Well... I guess it's just for a silly reason. When I first met you, I... I got attached, I think. Saw you as a 'father'... Hah. I don't get why, actually."

Yikes. Curt didn’t realise how much he meant to this person. Paris was.. A good person. A good investigator. But.. Jesus, they haven’t really gotten to know eachother much. They’ve encountered maybe— What, four times? Maybe more? He can’t recall the specific number. He did care for them, he really did. But the jump of being seen as a potential father figure?

“I’ve never planned to have kids.” He awkwardly commented. “And I didn’t think I’d become much of figure to anyone.”

His eyes finally break away from staring at Paris. “..I think I get what my mother means about my own behaviour now, about being with a father. I can see it in you. It’s.. Interesting, to say the least.”

"Huh..." Paris mumbled, thinking over his words. They smiled. "That's a start, then, I guess," they shrugged.

"I know we only encountered, like, five or so times before, but... That was enough to me hoping to see you whenever I went on another mission," they mumbled, their hand picking at their skin. "My father died shortly after I was born, and my mother... Well, she left. Maybe that's also why I sorta got attached to Ms. Mega. She- and... And you, were the only people remotely close to being actual parents. To me, at least."

“That’s the opposite of what I want you to think. I don’t want you hoping I’m around while you’re on some mission. That I’ll be around. That’s not how it’s supposed to go.” Curt’s lips curved downwards into a slow smile.

Maybe if he knew Paris longer and more then as just an investigator, he’d care for their life and sob story. Maybe it’s a bit rude, to not care about some dead father and a disappearing mother. Maybe the comment about his mother rubbed him the wrong way. “Don’t. Don’t comment about her about that and me in the same sentence.”

He felt bad for Paris. Extremely bad. But also a bit awkward. Did Paris really have no people outside of him, to develop such a view? No friends? No distant relatives..?

Curt’s just a spy. He shouldn’t be anything else.

Paris was silent, thinking. They knew very well Curt shouldn't matter to them as much as he did, but really, could they help it? They were just a kid, after all. And in their eyes, they still were, even as a fully grown adult. They weren't lying when they said they saw Mega as a father figure in their life.

"Sorry," Paris cleared their throat. "Hah... It really is ridiculous, isn't it? I guess it's just the response I can give. I had nothing else."

“I don’t think I’d be good at something like that, anyway. I wouldn’t settle down. I don’t think I could. I never could.”

I don’t mean to cut the conversation short.” He lied, but which part he couldn’t exactly be honest about that. All of it, probably. “You don’t mind if I leave so abruptly?”

Paris shook their head, standing up too. "No, you're good. I have to get back to my investigation anyway."

Curt doubted Paris would find anything about a spy agency. That was the point, after all. Spy agencies are secretive. If any normal civilian could find them, then what’s the point of existing?

“Good luck on that, kid. But I’d say cut your losses now. Don’t have to listen to me, however.”

Paris nodded. It was highly unlikely that they'd find anything about a spy agency, and they knew that very well. But who's gonna stop them from trying?

"Thanks," they give Curt a thumbs up. Clearing their throat, they move on to talk about some other topic. "You going on a mission tomorrow, or something?" They ask.

“I am. Budapest or something. Simple in and out, one little item.” Curt mentioned, rolling the bottom of his glass against the table idly. “Nothing I can’t handle, really. Pretty easy stuff.”

He paused, before immediately adding. “Do not follow me.” He knew they wouldn’t, but.. He had to be sure.

"Budapest, huh? Sounds interesting," Paris hummed, tapping their fingers on the table.

At Curt's comment, they laughed, raising their hands in surrender. "Hey, I'm not always gonna crash at your missions. Trust."

“It’s not, really. I’ve been there before. Nothing great there.” It’s a sore spot, really. Curt would love anywhere but there.

“I don’t want you to suddenly get some investigation in Budapest, so you can see me. That’s all. I still need to do my job.”

Paris chuckled. "Well, you did say 'nothing great' is there, so I won't intrude," they hummed. "Besides, almost all of my investigations are in Hatchetfield. A lot of secrets in my town, apparently."

“Keep a small-town investigator to a small town. It’s good.” Curt didn’t want them to experience the worst parts of life in bigger places and cities. “Enough for you to deal with, stick to that place.”

Paris nodded. "Sure, sure. Hatchetfield's already a..." They sighed. "A handful. I mean, relatively it's a nice place to live, but there's so many weird shit that happens there that I have yet to solve. Even if I've seen other timelines there's just some things I don't know yet."

“I haven’t even been to that town more then once. The place doesn’t attract much spy attention. Too weird for us, I guess.” He tried to laugh, but he wasn’t really feeling it. “I’m glad you can live somewhere so safe. It sounds nice.”

"Yeah, it can be when it wants to," Paris chuckled. "Hatchetfield is a mix of 'safest place in the world' and 'get the fuck outta there', if y'know what I mean."

Curt nodded, even if he didn’t understand that. The safest place he knew was his Mother’s, which he bought for her. So it could act as a safehouse. Which, god, he didn’t visit her frequently enough. But will that ever change? No. Curt rarely changed in his life.

His hands continued to fidget with his glass.

“..I feel like we’re running out of conversation here.” He mumbled out, eventually.

Paris hummed, nodding with a sigh of a laugh. "Yeah, hah... I guess it's been so long since we last had a conversation, huh?" They mumbled.

They paused for a moment. "Not that it matters, but... I kinda missed you," they say quietly.

“I’d joke, say I’ve never been good at a conversation. But, that’s part of my job.” Curt paused, before awkwardly adding on. “..That I’m returning to tomorrow, after a four year break.” He let silence hang in the air, before Paris eventually spoke. His eyes finally blinked at them, taking in the scarring that they had.

“You missed me?” There’s a pause, as his face twisted into confusion. Then, slowly, an odd look of disappointment. “I don’t see why you’d would. Sorry— I really don’t.”

Yikes. Curt didn’t realise how much he meant to this person. Paris was.. A good person. A good investigator. But.. Jesus, they haven’t really gotten to know eachother much. “I’ve never planned to have kids.” He awkwardly commented. “And I didn’t think I’d become much of figure to anyone.”

His eyes finally break away from staring at Paris. “..I think I get what my mother means about my own behaviour now, about being with a father. I can see it in you. It’s.. Interesting, to say the least.”

"Huh..." Paris mumbled, thinking over his words. They smiled. "That's a start, then, I guess," they shrugged.

"I know we only encountered, like, five or so times before, but... That was enough to me hoping to see you whenever I went on another mission," they mumbled, their hand picking at their skin. "My father died shortly after I was born, and my mother... Well, she left. Maybe that's also why I sorta got attached to Ms. Mega. She- and... And you, were the only people remotely close to being actual parents. To me, at least."

“That’s the opposite of what I want you to think. I don’t want you hoping I’m around while you’re on some mission. That I’ll be around. That’s not how it’s supposed to go.” Curt’s lips curved downwards into a slow smile.

Maybe if he knew Paris longer and more then as just an investigator, he’d care for their life and sob story. Maybe it’s a bit rude, to not care about some dead father and a disappearing mother. Maybe the comment about his mother rubbed him the wrong way. “Don’t. Don’t comment about her about that and me in the same sentence.”

He felt bad for Paris. Extremely bad. But also a bit awkward. Did Paris really have no people outside of him, to develop such a view? No friends? No distant relatives..?

Curt’s just a spy. He shouldn’t be anything else.

Paris was silent, thinking. They knew very well Curt shouldn't matter to them as much as he did, but really, could they help it? They were just a kid, after all. And in their eyes, they still were, even as a fully grown adult. They weren't lying when they said they saw Mega as a father figure in their life.

And maybe he still was. Even now, after so long.

"Sorry," Paris cleared their throat. "Hah... It really is ridiculous, isn't it? I guess it's just the response I can give. I had nothing else."

“You can keep thinking like that. I don’t really mind. Just.. Don’t call me dad. I think that’s a bit weird.”

A hand rubbed at the back of Curt’s neck. “I do care about you, enough to not want you dead and want you to live a good life.” And he still saw Paris as that young kid, long ago. But he still saw them as that, despite the visible growing. Why? Besides his emotions, it was mainly because he hasn’t seen them in four years. His brain considered Paris a bit of a stranger. Even if they were like that, before four years of never seeing them.

“I don’t think I’d be good at something like that, anyway. I wouldn’t settle down. I don’t think I could. I never could.”

Silence. They hadn't heard anything about Curt caring about them before. Well, maybe it passed in other conversations before, but it was short lived. This was... Sorta different. It was enough to make Paris tear up. Just a little bit.

They quickly wiped their eyes. "That's the expectancy of an agent, right?" They let out a small laugh. "I don't expect you to."

Paris was somewhere in Hatchetfield. Or, was.

They were visiting the United States for another mission. Still, they worked for no one, only for themselves and their theories, and they still hadn't been taken seriously as a real investigator. Some things never changed, they supposed.

Right now, Paris was sitting in a vintage style restaurant, eating from their plate slowly. God, they were tired. The whole day before then was spent looking for clues on whatever they were looking into. Paris loved that part of their 'job,' but it was still tiring nonetheless.

They snapped out of their thoughts when a man walked through the restaurant entrance. They squinted. Have they seen this guy before, or were they crazy?

It’s been four years, and Curt’s meant to be in Budapest by tomorrow.

But he’s still in The States for now, going through the last day of being a typical civilian until he got back into his career. Back to being a spy. The man he was supposed to be. A hand reached up and itched at the underside of his beard. It’s been easier to merely grow in a beard so he can look at himself in the mirror, pretend it was someone else staring back. It was easier than seeing the man, the face, that killed his partner.

He’s stepping into some restaurant, somewhere he’s been once or twice. It didn’t really matter to him. He just wanted a nice meal, instead of moping around like the rest of the week.

Paris raised a brow. This guy has a beard, it couldn't be who they thought this guy was. But then again, things change when time passes.

Curiosity won Paris' mind, as they walked over to the man, squinting. "Excuse me?" They tapped his shoulder.

Curt turns, eyes focusing on the other in-front of him. His eyes stared, before recognition washed over him. Eyebrows slowly raised. “Paris?” He questioned. He didn’t exactly expect to see them. Admittedly, he briefly forgot about them. He had.. Other things on his mind in the last four years.

“Jesus, you’ve changed.” He mumbled, eyes taking in their face. Paris has seemed to have grown a bit, in the time he hasn’t seen them.

Paris' eyes widened. It was him.

"Curt...?" They muttered, surprised at seeing the man after so long. Mega now sported a beard, and his hair was a bit longer. He looked the same, but... Also different. Paris supposed they changed too, though. More scars littered their body, and half of their face was burnt. "God... I haven't seen you in a while," they add, their voice quiet.

“Paris Reyes.” Curt repeated their name, now fully, with more confidence.

“Didn’t think I would see you again. Which, I’m glad for. Means you haven’t got into too bad of trouble.” His eyes skirted away from the sight of burns. Curt couldn’t look at those, reminded him of someone else and it had his hands itching for a drink. “How have you been? Anything new?”

"Curt Mega," Paris smiled, saying his name back at him. It was really nice seeing the Agent again.

"I've been... Ok. People still don't see me as a real investigator, but I'm improving," they chuckled. "I stole a whole arsenal of weapons from a corrupt agency and transferred it to the Hatchetfield Police Department this week."

“You gave more weapons to the police..?” Curt gave them an odd look. He didn’t seem to approve on that idea. But, he won’t comment on that part further. “Congratulations, hope you haven’t gotten more enemies with that. Seeing as how some people may be..”

Paris shrugged. "They paid me for it. Besides, if they try anything, I have an arsenal of my own," they laughed.

They paused, thinking. Did they make enemies? Maybe. "Hmm... I don't think so. Well, a mob of men with knives tried to stab me last time, but I managed."

Curt nodded slightly. “..Don’t go killing random people. Only within reason.”

His hands shuffled to rest in his pockets. “They didn’t get you, right? Not even a little nick of a knife?”

Paris nodded. "Noted. I've learned some things from you along the years, anyway," they smiled.

"Nope," they replied. "They did kick me pretty hard, and they did inject me with a needle, but I heard it just had water in it. So I'm fine."

“I don’t have anything good to teach you. I never do. Don’t take much of my advice.” Curt didn’t need Paris following in his footsteps and nowhere close. His eyes glanced even more away, disapproval scribbled on his face. His eyes take a liking to some random object in the restaurant they stood in.

Oh, right. Public place.

“Let’s sit down in a booth, don’t need anyone overhearing this conversation.” A hand grabs their arm lightly, before beginning to lead to some vague booth. He didn’t care if it was reserved for someone or if it was actually empty.

“Even if it was water, still dangerous. It just depends on where it’s injected. I think.” He gave a brief shrug. “That’s nerd shit, but good to heed their warnings.”

It sounded quite negative to them. Something must've happened in those four years Curt was gone... But Paris wouldn't ask about it.

Sitting in the booth, they nod. "Well, I think I felt a bit light-headed getting home that evening..." They mumbled, playing with a fork that was left on the table. "But the next day I was alright again, so that's good, I guess."

Paris smiled. "Yeah... I've been doing ok. How about... You?" They mutter, looking up at Mega with curious eyes. They chuckle. "Nice beard, though. It looks good on you."

Curt couldn’t help but trail off. How was he doing? Besides being out of the field, he hasn’t really done much. He’s been alive. Around. But has he really been living? That’s why he was going back to spying.

“I’ve been out of the field for a while. Getting back to it tomorrow. Short retirement.” He vaguely answered, getting comfortable in the booth. “But, you like the beard? Thanks.”

Curt’s hands itched for a drink. He already had his flask packed away for his flight later tonight, so he didn’t have that on him.

He idly glanced down at his hands, as they rested on the table. Briefly glancing over his nails, noting he should trim them. Should he trim his beard? No, he wouldn’t dare touch that. Bad idea. “No, not willingly. Cynthia forced me to take a break.” He mumbled. “Or— Well, my boss. She’d have my head if she knew I just used her name.” It’s paired with a light laugh, not being too serious about it.

Paris chuckled. "Cynthia, your boss, huh?" They tapped their wrist. "She sounds strict already. Or, y'know... It's probably just policy for your spy thing," they shrugged.

Noticing how fidgety Curt was, Paris stood up. "Hang on a minute," they muttered, before quickly getting a drink for the both of them. They sensed he needed one right now. For what reason, they didn't know, but it'd help, they guessed.

"Here," they push a glass to Mega. "Drink up. I have a feeling you wanna take a shot," they smile slightly.

“Make sure you aren’t off your guard around her. She’s very sharp.” He briefly shrugged. “And, it’s a mix of both.”

Curt’s mouth opened, as if asking where they’d go, before Paris is gone from the table. It wasn’t long but.. He merely waited, glancing around the restaurant idly. Watching more happier people enjoy meals.

When Paris returned, he took the glass. He raised an eyebrow. “I appreciate it. I can tell you still haven’t drank much, because this isn’t a shot glass. Just a proper glass. What’d you order, anyway?” But he lifted the glass to his lips, taking a slow drink out of it.

Curt downed the awful concoction, feeling it taste absolutely horrendous. His body stiffened, putting down the glass slowly. “Jesus.” He whispered, before turning away to briefly cough. “You— How did you even order this?” He pat a hand lightly at his own chest as his coughing subsided. “The drinking age is twenty one here in The States.”

Paris smiled. "I'm friends with the bartender here," they explained. "She helps me on my investigations sometimes, too. She has this awesome motorcycle."

“She could be fined for serving alcohol to a minor and the business could be shut down as it occurred in these premises. Don’t get caught.” Curt mumbled, before deciding to down the rest of the concoction in the glass anyway. His hands then idly fidgeted with the glass.

Paris gave him a thumbs up and a grin. They still looked like how they did when they were younger; goofy, mischievous, risking everything for an adventure. It reminded Curt of the simpler times, back when his partner was still alive and when Paris was always messing with him.

"Noted," they nodded. "You want another drink-?" They ask, seeing Curt fidget with the empty glass. Already, they were grabbing the bottle of vodka and opening the lid.

Curt took back his glass, not taking long to drink it up. The familiar burn in his throat was comforting. A constant in his ever-changing life. His eyes briefly shut, taking about a minute before he’s opening his eyes again. His eyes have softened, dragged down by the weight of grief. His shoulders slump now, leaning forward slightly and letting his body lean against the table.

“Let’s talk about something else, Paris.” Even if there wasn’t a specific topic they had been talking about.

And in their eyes, they still were, even as a fully grown adult. They weren't lying when they said they saw Mega as a father figure in their life.

"Sorry," Paris cleared their throat. "Hah... It really is ridiculous, isn't it? I guess it's just the response I can give. I had nothing else."

“Didn’t think I would see you again. Which, I’m glad for. Means you haven’t got into too bad of trouble.” His eyes skirted away from the sight of burns. Curt couldn’t look at those, reminded him of someone else and it had his hands itching for a drink. “How have you been? Anything new?”

"I've been... Ok. People still don't see me as a real investigator, but I'm improving," they chuckled. "I stole a whole arsenal of weapons from a corrupt agency and transferred it to the Hatchetfield Police Department this week."

“You gave more weapons to the police..?” Curt gave them an odd look. He didn’t seem to approve on that idea. But, he won’t comment on that part further. “Congratulations, hope you haven’t gotten more enemies with that. Seeing as how some people may be..”

Paris shrugged. "They paid me for it. Besides, if they try anything, I have an arsenal of my own," they laughed.

“Let’s sit down in a booth, don’t need anyone overhearing this conversation.” A hand grabs their arm lightly, before beginning to lead to some vague booth. He didn’t care if it was reserved for someone or if it was actually empty.

“Even if it was water, still dangerous. It just depends on where it’s injected. I think.” He gave a brief shrug. “That’s nerd shit, but good to heed their warnings.”

Bad idea. “No, not willingly. Cynthia forced me to take a break.” He mumbled. “Or— Well, my boss. She’d have my head if she knew I just used her name.” It’s paired with a light laugh, not being too serious about it.

Noticing how fidgety Curt was, Paris stood up. "Hang on a minute," they muttered, before quickly getting a drink for the both of them. They sensed he needed one right now. For what reason, they didn't know, but it'd help, they guessed.

"Here," they push a glass to Mega. "Drink up. I have a feeling you wanna take a shot," they smile slightly.

When Paris returned, he took the glass. He raised an eyebrow. “I appreciate it. I can tell you still haven’t drank much, because this isn’t a shot glass. Just a proper glass. What’d you order, anyway?” But he lifted the glass to his lips, taking a slow drink out of it.

His body stiffened, putting down the glass slowly. “Jesus.” He whispered, before turning away to briefly cough. “You— How did you even order this?” He pat a hand lightly at his own chest as his coughing subsided. “The drinking age is twenty one here in The States.”

Paris gave him a thumbs up and a grin. They still looked like how they did when they were younger; goofy, mischievous, risking everything for an adventure. It reminded Curt of the simpler times, back when his partner was still alive and when Paris was always messing with him.

"Noted," they nodded. "You want another drink-?" They ask, seeing Curt fidget with the empty glass. Already, they were grabbing the bottle of vodka and opening the lid.

Curt took back his glass, not taking long to drink it up. The familiar burn in his throat was comforting. A constant in his ever-changing life. His eyes briefly shut, taking about a minute before he’s opening his eyes again. His eyes have softened, dragged down by the weight of grief. His shoulders slump now, leaning forward slightly and letting his body lean against the table.

"No, not the ASS or whatever the other one was," Paris shook their head. "It's a company called..." They took a moment to look through some files they had in their bag.

No recognition shimmered in Curt’s eyes. It wasn’t the point in time where he was meant to know, after all. But, in the next few days he’ll find out about them plenty. He didn’t seem interested in them now.

“Some country’s agency, probably some nerdy shit. More scientists than agents, I’ll imagine.” He waved it off. “I don’t want to know anymore, actually.”

I’d suggest you just drop the investigation on them and find something that’ll earn you real shown efforts.” Curt tried to encourage. He didn’t want Paris snooping around places they shouldn’t. Sure, not his agency and shouldn’t worry. But, he didn’t want Paris getting hurt by professionals in his career path.

Paris nodded, listening to Curt speak. The past few weeks, nothing had turned up on Chimera, so they supposed he had a point. But they'd keep trying. They were stubborn like that.

"Hm... I'll think about it," they reply. "Cutting investigations takes me a bit," they chuckled. "But I'll keep it in mind. Thanks."

“I am. Budapest or something. Simple in and out, one little item.” Curt mentioned, rolling the bottom of his glass against the table idly. “Nothing I can’t handle, really. Pretty easy stuff.”

At Curt's comment, they laughed, raising their hands in surrender. "Hey, I'm not always gonna crash at your missions. Trust."

“It’s not, really. I’ve been there before. Nothing great there.” It’s a sore spot, really. Curt would love anywhere but there.

They were visiting the United States for another mission. Still, they worked for no one, only for themselves and their theories, and they still hadn't been taken seriously as a real investigator. Some things never changed, they supposed.

Right now, Paris was sitting in a vintage style restaurant, eating from their plate slowly. God, they were tired. The whole day before then was spent looking for clues on whatever they were looking into. Paris loved that part of their 'job,' but it was still tiring nonetheless.

It’s been four years, and Curt’s meant to be in Budapest by tomorrow.

But he’s still in The States for now, going through the last day of being a typical civilian until he got back into his career. Back to being a spy. The man he was supposed to be. A hand reached up and itched at the underside of his beard. It’s been easier to merely grow in a beard so he can look at himself in the mirror, pretend it was someone else staring back. It was easier than seeing the man, the face, that killed his partner.

He’s stepping into some restaurant, somewhere he’s been once or twice. It didn’t really matter to him. He just wanted a nice meal, instead of moping around like the rest of the week.

“Didn’t think I would see you again. Which, I’m glad for. Means you haven’t got into too bad of trouble.” His eyes skirted away from the sight of burns. Curt couldn’t look at those, reminded him of someone else and it had his hands itching for a drink. “How have you been? Anything new?”

"Curt Mega," Paris smiled, saying his name back at him. It was really nice seeing the Agent again.

"I've been... Ok. People still don't see me as a real investigator, but I'm improving," they chuckled. "I stole a whole arsenal of weapons from a corrupt agency and transferred it to the Hatchetfield Police Department this week."

“You gave more weapons to the police..?” Curt gave them an odd look. He didn’t seem to approve on that idea. But, he won’t comment on that part further. “Congratulations, hope you haven’t gotten more enemies with that. Seeing as how some people may be..”

“Let’s sit down in a booth, don’t need anyone overhearing this conversation.” A hand grabs their arm lightly, before beginning to lead to some vague booth. He didn’t care if it was reserved for someone or if it was actually empty.

“Even if it was water, still dangerous. It just depends on where it’s injected. I think.” He gave a brief shrug. “That’s nerd shit, but good to heed their warnings.”

They were visiting the United States for another mission. Still, they worked for no one, only for themselves and their theories, and they still hadn't been taken seriously as a real investigator. Some things never changed, they supposed.

Right now, Paris was sitting in a vintage style restaurant, eating from their plate slowly. God, they were tired. The whole day before then was spent looking for clues on whatever they were looking into. Paris loved that part of their 'job,' but it was still tiring nonetheless.

Ding!

They snapped out of their thoughts when a man walked through the restaurant entrance. They squinted. Have they seen this guy before, or were they crazy?

It’s been four years, and Curt’s meant to be in Budapest by tomorrow.

But he’s still in The States for now, going through the last day of being a typical civilian until he got back into his career. Back to being a spy. The man he was supposed to be. A hand reached up and itched at the underside of his beard. It’s been easier to merely grow in a beard so he can look at himself in the mirror, pretend it was someone else staring back. It was easier than seeing the man, the face, that killed his partner.

He’s stepping into some restaurant, somewhere he’s been once or twice. It didn’t really matter to him. He just wanted a nice meal, instead of moping around like the rest of the week.

Paris raised a brow. This guy has a beard, it couldn't be who they thought this guy was. But then again, things change when time passes.

Curiosity won Paris' mind, as they walked over to the man, squinting. "Excuse me?" They tapped his shoulder.

Curt turns, eyes focusing on the other in-front of him. His eyes stared, before recognition washed over him. Eyebrows slowly raised. “Paris?” He questioned. He didn’t exactly expect to see them. Admittedly, he briefly forgot about them. He had.. Other things on his mind in the last four years.

“Jesus, you’ve changed.” He mumbled, eyes taking in their face. Paris has seemed to have grown a bit, in the time he hasn’t seen them.

Paris' eyes widened. It was him.

"Curt...?" They muttered, surprised at seeing the man after so long. Mega now sported a beard, and his hair was a bit longer. He looked the same, but... Also different. Paris supposed they changed too, though. More scars littered their body, and half of their face was burnt. "God... I haven't seen you in a while," they add, their voice quiet.

“Paris Reyes.” Curt repeated their name, now fully, with more confidence.

“Didn’t think I would see you again. Which, I’m glad for. Means you haven’t got into too bad of trouble.” His eyes skirted away from the sight of burns. Curt couldn’t look at those, reminded him of someone else and it had his hands itching for a drink. “How have you been? Anything new?”

"Curt Mega," Paris smiled, saying his name back at him. It was really nice seeing the Agent again.

"I've been... Ok. People still don't see me as a real investigator, but I'm improving," they chuckled. "I stole a whole arsenal of weapons from a corrupt agency and transferred it to the Hatchetfield Police Department this week."

“You gave more weapons to the police..?” Curt gave them an odd look. He didn’t seem to approve on that idea. But, he won’t comment on that part further. “Congratulations, hope you haven’t gotten more enemies with that. Seeing as how some people may be..”

Paris shrugged. "They paid me for it. Besides, if they try anything, I have an arsenal of my own," they laughed.

They paused, thinking. Did they make enemies? Maybe. "Hmm... I don't think so. Well, a mob of men with knives tried to stab me last time, but I managed."

Curt nodded slightly. “..Don’t go killing random people. Only within reason.”

His hands shuffled to rest in his pockets. “They didn’t get you, right? Not even a little nick of a knife?”

Paris nodded. "Noted. I've learned some things from you along the years, anyway," they smiled.

"Nope," they replied. "They did kick me pretty hard, and they did inject me with a needle, but I heard it just had water in it. So I'm fine."

“I don’t have anything good to teach you. I never do. Don’t take much of my advice.” Curt didn’t need Paris following in his footsteps and nowhere close. His eyes glanced even more away, disapproval scribbled on his face. His eyes take a liking to some random object in the restaurant they stood in.

Oh, right. Public place.

“Let’s sit down in a booth, don’t need anyone overhearing this conversation.” A hand grabs their arm lightly, before beginning to lead to some vague booth. He didn’t care if it was reserved for someone or if it was actually empty.

“Even if it was water, still dangerous. It just depends on where it’s injected. I think.” He gave a brief shrug. “That’s nerd shit, but good to heed their warnings.”

Paris raised a brow.

'Don't take much of my advice.'

It sounded quite negative to them. Something must've happened in those four years Curt was gone... But Paris wouldn't ask about it.

Sitting in the booth, they nod. "Well, I think I felt a bit light-headed getting home that evening..." They mumbled, playing with a fork that was left on the table. "But the next day I was alright again, so that's good, I guess."

Curt slowly sat.

“That’s to be expected.” He mumbled, adjusting his suit jacket slowly while a hand scratched at a small part of his beard. God, he didn’t even like his own beard. Always felt so scratchy.

“At least you’re okay by now, even if it was ages ago.”

Paris smiled. "Yeah... I've been doing ok. How about... You?" They mutter, looking up at Mega with curious eyes. They chuckle. "Nice beard, though. It looks good on you."

“I’ve been..”

Curt couldn’t help but trail off. How was he doing? Besides being out of the field, he hasn’t really done much. He’s been alive. Around. But has he really been living? That’s why he was going back to spying.

“I’ve been out of the field for a while. Getting back to it tomorrow. Short retirement.” He vaguely answered, getting comfortable in the booth. “But, you like the beard? Thanks.”

Paris nodded. Maybe that's why they hadn't crossed paths in the past four years... A short hiatus from the spy status made sense. Still, they sensed something... Else happened.

"Oh, so like, you took a short time away from the spy business? That's good to hear," they say instead. Paris didn't want the conversation to get awkward by asking bluntly if something other than what Curt told them happened. This was their first time seeing each other in four years. It'd be rude.

"And yes, I do like the beard," they add with a smile.

Curt’s hands itched for a drink. He already had his flask packed away for his flight later tonight, so he didn’t have that on him.

He idly glanced down at his hands, as they rested on the table. Briefly glancing over his nails, noting he should trim them. Should he trim his beard? No, he wouldn’t dare touch that. Bad idea. “No, not willingly. Cynthia forced me to take a break.” He mumbled. “Or— Well, my boss. She’d have my head if she knew I just used her name.” It’s paired with a light laugh, not being too serious about it.

Paris chuckled. "Cynthia, your boss, huh?" They tapped their wrist. "She sounds strict already. Or, y'know... It's probably just policy for your spy thing," they shrugged.

Noticing how fidgety Curt was, Paris stood up. "Hang on a minute," they muttered, before quickly getting a drink for the both of them. They sensed he needed one right now. For what reason, they didn't know, but it'd help, they guessed.

"Here," they push a glass to Mega. "Drink up. I have a feeling you wanna take a shot," they smile slightly.

“Make sure you aren’t off your guard around her. She’s very sharp.” He briefly shrugged. “And, it’s a mix of both.”

Curt’s mouth opened, as if asking where they’d go, before Paris is gone from the table. It wasn’t long but.. He merely waited, glancing around the restaurant idly. Watching more happier people enjoy meals.

When Paris returned, he took the glass. He raised an eyebrow. “I appreciate it. I can tell you still haven’t drank much, because this isn’t a shot glass. Just a proper glass. What’d you order, anyway?” But he lifted the glass to his lips, taking a slow drink out of it.

Paris chuckled. "Just some vodka... A bit of beer too, in case you don't like that kinda stuff," they shrugged. "I'm not too interested in drinking alcohol, even if I am already nineteen. I still like those packs of juice you get at parties and stuff, typical me, I guess," they laughed.

Curt downed the awful concoction, feeling it taste absolutely horrendous. His body stiffened, putting down the glass slowly. “Jesus.” He whispered, before turning away to briefly cough. “You— How did you even order this?” He pat a hand lightly at his own chest as his coughing subsided. “The drinking age is twenty one here in The States.”

Paris smiled. "I'm friends with the bartender here," they explained. "She helps me on my investigations sometimes, too. She has this awesome motorcycle."

“She could be fined for serving alcohol to a minor and the business could be shut down as it occurred in these premises. Don’t get caught.” Curt mumbled, before deciding to down the rest of the concoction in the glass anyway. His hands then idly fidgeted with the glass.

Paris gave him a thumbs up and a grin. They still looked like how they did when they were younger; goofy, mischievous, risking everything for an adventure. It reminded Curt of the simpler times, back when his partner was still alive and when Paris was always messing with him.

"Noted," they nodded. "You want another drink-?" They ask, seeing Curt fidget with the empty glass. Already, they were grabbing the bottle of vodka and opening the lid.

Curt tried to ignore his thoughts, they way they were drudging up old memories. Of the man he was four years ago, the better version of himself. The man that didn’t cause a loved one’s demise. That he was still one of the greatest spies in the world.

His eyes glanced down at the table.

If he wasn’t being reminded with memories and maybe a better version of himself, Curt might’ve scolded Paris for the alcohol they were now handling. But he’s gone quiet, staring down at the table anyway. He gives the smallest of nods.

Paris frowns. Something was wrong... Maybe Curt was thinking about things he wasn't fond of thinking about. They quickly pour more alcohol into his cup, sliding it to him. "Look, I don't know... what happened exactly, but I hope you can recover. You're a good guy. Whatever you did was for the best, I'm sure," they say quietly, smiling as they pat Curt's shoulder.

Curt took back his glass, not taking long to drink it up. The familiar burn in his throat was comforting. A constant in his ever-changing life. His eyes briefly shut, taking about a minute before he’s opening his eyes again. His eyes have softened, dragged down by the weight of grief. His shoulders slump now, leaning forward slightly and letting his body lean against the table.

“Let’s talk about something else, Paris.” Even if there wasn’t a specific topic they had been talking about.

Paris watched as Curt drank, and as his body relaxed. They nod at his words. "Yeah, sure... Of course. Hm..." They paused, thinking. "Well, I am starting one of my first big investigations... It's on a spy agency too."

A brief spike of unease sparked inside Curt, but it’s extinguished slowly as he drank. “..Care to indulge me on what that might be? Not going after ASS or M16, are you?” He questioned. “Or are you not allowed to tell me what the investigation is?”

"No, not the ASS or whatever the other one was," Paris shook their head. "It's a company called..." They took a moment to look through some files they had in their bag.

"Chimera."

No recognition shimmered in Curt’s eyes. It wasn’t the point in time where he was meant to know, after all. But, in the next few days he’ll find out about them plenty. He didn’t seem interested in them now.

He even rolled his eyes.

“Some country’s agency, probably some nerdy shit. More scientists than agents, I’ll imagine.” He waved it off. “I don’t want to know anymore, actually.”

Paris nodded, keeping the documents. "I'll just say that I heard about them after my friend went missing... It seems the events are connected, somehow... I just have to find out everything about these sons of bitches."

“It’s a spy agency. You’ll find nothing on them. You were lucky to find out about me, when we first met. I’d suggest you just drop the investigation on them and find something that’ll earn you real shown efforts.” Curt tried to encourage. He didn’t want Paris snooping around places they shouldn’t. Sure, not his agency and shouldn’t worry. But, he didn’t want Paris getting hurt by professionals in his career path.

Paris nodded, listening to Curt speak. The past few weeks, nothing had turned up on Chimera, so they supposed he had a point. But they'd keep trying. They were stubborn like that.

"Hm... I'll think about it," they reply. "Cutting investigations takes me a bit," they chuckled. "But I'll keep it in mind. Thanks."

Curt doubted Paris would find anything about a spy agency. That was the point, after all. Spy agencies are secretive. If any normal civilian could find them, then what’s the point of existing?

“Good luck on that, kid. But I’d say cut your losses now. Don’t have to listen to me, however.”

Paris nodded. It was highly unlikely that they'd find anything about a spy agency, and they knew that very well. But who's gonna stop them from trying?

"Thanks," they give Curt a thumbs up. Clearing their throat, they move on to talk about some other topic. "You going on a mission tomorrow, or something?" They ask.

“I am. Budapest or something. Simple in and out, one little item.” Curt mentioned, rolling the bottom of his glass against the table idly. “Nothing I can’t handle, really. Pretty easy stuff.”

He paused, before immediately adding. “Do not follow me.” He knew they wouldn’t, but.. He had to be sure.

"Budapest, huh? Sounds interesting," Paris hummed, tapping their fingers on the table.

At Curt's comment, they laughed, raising their hands in surrender. "Hey, I'm not always gonna crash at your missions. Trust."

“It’s not, really. I’ve been there before. Nothing great there.” It’s a sore spot, really. Curt would love anywhere but there.

“I don’t want you to suddenly get some investigation in Budapest, so you can see me. That’s all. I still need to do my job.”

Paris chuckled. "Well, you did say 'nothing great' is there, so I won't intrude," they hummed. "Besides, almost all of my investigations are in Hatchetfield. A lot of secrets in my town, apparently."

“Keep a small-town investigator to a small town. It’s good.” Curt didn’t want them to experience the worst parts of life in bigger places and cities. “Enough for you to deal with, stick to that place.”

Paris nodded. "Sure, sure. Hatchetfield's already a..." They sighed. "A handful. I mean, relatively it's a nice place to live, but there's so many weird shit that happens there that I have yet to solve. Even if I've seen other timelines there's just some things I don't know yet."

Curt just skirts around the topic of timelines. He’s not the man that can accurately talk in that topic. His aching heart might entertain silly ideas, too.

“I haven’t even been to that town more then once. The place doesn’t attract much spy attention. Too weird for us, I guess.” He tried to laugh, but he wasn’t really feeling it. “I’m glad you can live somewhere so safe. It sounds nice.”

"Yeah, it can be when it wants to," Paris chuckled. "Hatchetfield is a mix of 'safest place in the world' and 'get the fuck outta there', if y'know what I mean."

Ethan was working somewhere in his father's car shop, his hands rough and calloused as he focused on repairing somebody's car. He was about to get up to grab a snack, when he spotted someone, a teenager, standing in the garage door.

[It's been a while since he last helped out with his pops, but now that he's back in Hatchetfield, he figured he should work here again for that extra cash. He notices the teen standing there for who knows how long]

As long as the garage is open, the shop's open. Anything you need to fix?

The teenager walked in the shop, pulling in a motorcycle into the driveway. "I know this place is for cars, but is there any way you could maybe fix up the engine of this thing? I need to go somewhere in a few hours," they reply.

Oh, a motorbike! I'm sure I can fix that. I own a bike myself, anyways. Though, you're gonna have to wait a little longer than a few hours because I'm still not done with this one yet.

Paris thinks. They couldn't just disclose all of their investigations, since most of them involved topics out of the average person's comprehension. But they'd try.

"Well... I've seen other timelines and universes and try to prevent horrible events from happening, I've died multiple times, and uh..." They paused to think. "Oh, and I've killed multiple people. Any questions?"

Paris blinked. "Wow, one of the first people to believe the shit I say," they laughed. "People call me crazy. But I just think they're avoiding the topic."

They raise a brow. "You mean... Trying to run away from Hatchetfield? No trace of your existence, at all? Because if that's the case, then I could probably help."
