There are A LOT of crabs on Christmas Island, man.
They used to cross the road, probably, no definitely, without looking left and right. And they got squished.
Environmentalists had a hell of a job, keeping them in their lane. Traffic would have to be blocked for the duration.
But now, they have a lovely bridge, and no one has to ask: Why did the Christmas Island Crab cross the road, if they’re just gonna get squished?
Answer: They want to hit the beach. Because that’s where they like to have sex. And because the mummy crabs like to throw their eggs into the ocean after they’ve spawned them in the burrows that the daddy crab so kindly digs on the beach.
Look at them scurrying over their bridge, the smell of the ocean in their noses, the thought of copulation driving them on…
Whew! Finally, made it to the beach…now The Sex can begin!
Mission accomplished… And a few weeks later after a float in the ocean…
Back come the ankle biters…to the rainforest where they live.

Shell Collecting: Acceptable or No?
So in the crab community I’ve started to see some debate around this and I want to hear more opinions. I’ve heard a few hermit crabs say that at best shell collecting is cultural appropriation and at worst it’s stealing potential homes. I’m not a hermit crab, so I feel like I should probably just stay in my lane, but if any of you guys have any supporting or counter arguments I’d love to hear them. Just trying to educate my self :)
I’m sorry, lobsters
Hey so not too long ago I made an anti-lobster textpost on this account. At the time I was bitter, angry, and confused.
I recently met a lobster, who, in contradiction with my previous beliefs, was a very kind crustacean. Talking to them has made me reconsider my stance on lobsters.
I think this just goes to show that even if someone has really good intentions, everyone makes mistakes. I was distracted from the original purpose of this account: to spread love for minorities, specifically crustacean minorities. And now I see that that should include lobsters. By not including lobsters, I am a part of the problem.
I don’t expect you to just take my word that I’ve had this sudden change of heart- and honestly, I haven’t. Prejudice is embedded into every aspect of our culture and minds. That’s not just something I can undo over night. But, my point is, I will now start making an active effort to untangle myself from that prejudice.
So please- call me out if I ever say something insensitive! And let’s stay crustacean strong <3

I actually emigrated from the ocean! I’m currently living in a small apartment in San Francisco.

Having one big claw to show off with, but also a smaller, more dexterous one for more delicate tasks and eating bits of trash
What great enemies and creatures crabs make in video games!
Their incredible profusion & variety. Even just Brachyura, the ‘true crab’ species, make up half of all known decapods, not to mention hermit, king, porcelain &c crabs. Crabs occupy niches ranging from the deepest parts of the ocean, to the shore, to the treetops–from the largest land-dwelling arthropod to extremophiles living metres away from undersea thermal vents, to tiny careful gardeners ensuring the health of coral reefs.
The careful deliberate slowness of their movements, the intricacy of their life cycle, their tiny eye turrets, their shyness & pugnacity….
There are almost endless things to love about crabs!
