Connecting the Simple Good:  USA + Tanzania Exhibition Recap

Through this incredible collaboration between The Disposable Project and The Simple Good, high school students from Moshi, Tanzania and Chicago, USA each participated in a photography project capturing their meaning of good in their everyday lives. The collection of photos resulted in unveiling the beautiful parallels of good across the globe.

Participating Chicago students from Fenger High School from Chicago's South Side presented their powerful stories of The Simple Good during the opening reception held at Northwestern Law School. Check out the photos and remarkable stories of each student's journey of understanding the simple good in their lives.

It’s been a long road for us, but here we are.. April 2015!

To celebrate + mark the end of our fundraising campaign - remember our efforts in facilitating education in rural Tanzania via our non-profit partner, Born To Learn? - we’re teaming up with The Simple Good in a collaborative photo project + exhibition!

Through this effort, TDP + TSG have come together to unite the meaning of Good across seas through a beautiful photography project implemented with at-risk youth in Moshi, Tanzania and Chicago, Illinois. The project unveils each students' meaning of 'the simple good' and connects the meaning to each other through a powerful Photo Exhibition at Northwestern Law School. To see some of the Chicago-based participating youth at work on discovering their definitions of “good” in their everyday lives, check out TSG Facebook.

THE DISPOSABLE PROJECT

The Disposable Project is a volunteer-run, charitable endeavor based on the images produced by 9 children with 100 disposable cameras in Tanzania. The project at it’s core harbours hopes of promoting the arts, education, and sustainability in the community. 

After a successful Kickstarter fundraising campaign, Raul steadily worked on publishing a book featuring 60+ photographs from the students, which was launched on April 6th, 2014. The book, along with the prints, will only be available for purchase for a limited time of 12 months with all proceeds being accrued for a direct donation to Born To Learn.

The children capture their everyday experiences. Giving us the viewer the opportunity to explore a collection of intimate memories as well as aspects of the culture and it’s values. 

Through The Disposable Project, these nine young photographers bring the face of their community to you. 

Since early 2013, Raul has been living and working as a Youth Development/Asset Building Peace Corps Volunteer in rural Morocco. Focusing on projects aiming to enhance the opportunities for the young people there. Raul will complete his service in April 2015, which is when he hopes to return to Tanzania.

From May 11th to July 20th of 2011, Raul Guerrero embarked on a communal photography project with the Newlands area of Moshi, Tanzania. Collaborating with Born to Learn, a program that gives disadvantaged youth the opportunity to receive an education, he provided 100 disposable cameras to Alex Charles, Jenifer Wilson, John Leo, Kamili Kalist, Peter Michael, Petro Ngowi, Samson Modest, Sebastian Simon, and Stanley Felix. Teaching the students basic photography skills, Raul developed creative methods for them to share their stories by documenting their everyday experiences. Working as a collective, these nine students bring the faces of their community to you.”
