Making Progress
vengeful-destruction:
Danae growled until she felt his lips against hers. She wanted to deepen the kiss, wanted nothing more than to stay right there for the rest of the night. She knew that Doc was right though and if she couldn’t have what she wanted then sending those vampires to whatever hell they deserved would do just as well.
Murdoch could feel the blackened energy rolling off of her in waves the entire time they were speaking with the Council. He would have expected her to interject at any given point, to say just how vile and murderous these cretins were, but she remained eerily calm, though her form betrayed her. He’d seen her lash out over the years in full Erinyes form. It was not something he enjoyed seeing, and that large, overwhelming part of him that was Light recoiled at the memory, at the sight, and nearly at her touch.
He wanted to mention how suspicious he found it, how readily the Council agreed to their assessment of the situation and the need for a cleansing, but he knew that she would only say something along the lines of ‘Who cares? As long as I get to sink my terrible nails into their worthless necks, I’m fine.’ ...more or less, anyway.
“Would you prefer my help, or would you rather take your sisters?” He asked conversationally, once the link to the Council had disintegrated.

Danae smirked and pushed Murdoch back until he hit the wall. “I want to see more.” Not only did she mean more of his true self but also the fighting. It had stirred something dark inside her and she wanted more. “Show me.”
His lips quirked up, but he gave a small shake of his head. “Later, my love. Once we’ve dealt with the veritable den of iniquity. Scouts honor.” He said, his hands gripping her shoulders as he gently pushed her back. “Scourge first. Show and tell later.” He pressed his lips gently against hers to take the sting from his refusal.

“But it is a start.” Danae started at him and took a deep breath, but it did not change her current state. Instinct had fully taken over and she doubted she would be able to fully calm down before returning to the vampires.
She did notice his change though and looked him over after the gold vanished from him. “What was that?” Her blackened hand came to rest on his chest. “I’ve never seen you do that before.” Dani looked back up to meet his gaze. “I’ve never seen you fight like that.”
Murdoch was at a loss for a moment, “I am old, Danae, and I’ve not always looked like this.” He said slowly, “You could...you could compare it to this...” He said, running his fingers along hers. “And as for fighting, well, you haven’t actually had the opportunity to see me fight much. That was...nothing.” He admitted, thinking of Bacchus and how easily he’d snuffed out the gods light.

There was a low growl that rumbled from Danae as Doc pulled her aside. There was nothing more that she would like than to bring the vampires to their knees. She could feel her instincts taking over as she tried to calm herself down. Her nails began growing and turning black before spreading to her hands and up her arms. It never even crossed her mind that he might not mean for them to be the means of the cleansing.
“It will be my pleasure to put and end to their games.” She was ready to go now, all the events she had witnessed had her blood boiling. “Have your brother see to the child, or stay here and I will summon my sisters but they will not continue for another night.”
Murdoch surveyed her with his ageless eyes, silently weighing her, unaware that the gold veins still glittered across his skin. After a moment, however, his wings vanished and skin returned to is fair freckled normalcy. “Peace, my love. They will be handled tonight with no doubt. I believe their demise will draw out the rest. This den is not the rue of Detroit.” His hand cupped her face gently so that she would meet his gaze. “We’ll alert the Council, then Buffy the hell out of them, yeah? Keep your temper now and save it for them...” He glanced at the fae child. “ Theo, will you see him home?”

As soon as they made it to the back room, Danae felt it. No one inside of these cages deserved this fate, not even the wolf man. It was taking all of her will power to not move to destroy every single one of the vampires running the club and considering that they deserved the punishment, the Fury would have no problem in destroying every single one of them, dragging their souls to the pits of the underworld. She could practically taste the power it would give her and she had to focus all of her attention once more on the vampire’s words.
“Don’t forget your place, child. He would have never been yours, no matter the outcome of the fight.” She gave Viv a once over but showed no sign of appraisal. If the vampire thought she could gain an invitation similar to the one that Comus had received then she would be sorely disappointed.
“As you should be. He fucks as good as he fights, but I don’t share with lesser creatures.” Dani quipped with a smirk and flicked her wrist in the direction of the child as she continued to force her charade. She spoke to Doc again in a language that only he would know. “Please get the child so we can leave this place before I lose my composure and take every one of their souls in the bloodiest way possible. Everyone in the cages is imprisoned unjustly save for that man you just fought.”
She turned back to the vampire with a grin, doing her best to hide the twitch in her hand as it itched to bring forth her scourge and cut the woman down. “It’s so much easier when you get them younger. Training them takes a lot less effort.”
The ballerina like vampire hummed, “Ah, but thems the rules, sister.” She shrugged a shoulder carelessly, a small smile forming across her lips at Dani’s description of her as a lesser creature. “Contritionem praecedit superbia.” She recited, tapping her own nose before flouncing out of the room.
Murdoch wasted no time in retrieving the child, muttering soothingly in the boy's own language. A frightened fae could truthfully do more damage to him than the wolf man would ever be able to do. Whether the boy could sense his intentions or that he believed anyone to be better than his captors, he clung to the Peri like a vine as they walked back through the club. There were catcalls and jeers, but soon enough they were back on the sidewalk, the front of the building not betraying the paranormal fighting ring that lay within.
Without waiting for Danae’s go ahead, Murdoch pulled them all back to the relative safety of their hotel. He was already speaking rapid fire to the fae child, soothing, consoling. Theo appeared mere moments after their arrival, talking to the child in a voice that spread calm throughout the room.
“There is no question.” Doc said, pulling Danae aside as Theo took his place, “There will be a cleansing.”

He chuckled and gave Doc a clap, unlike the rest of the crowd, when his opponent dropped to the floor. Danae was slightly disappointed that he was still breathing but that didn’t stop her from nodding her head in Doc’s direction once he was done. “As tempting as that sounds, you know I prefer not to be involved in the same sexual exploits as daddy dearest.”
Danae wrinkled her nose and ignored the man waving her over with the flick of her wrist. “Speaking of Bacchus.” Comus continued as he pulled her toward the vampire anyway, “Have you seen him lately? He’s been suspiciously quiet recently.” Arching her brow, she shook her head. “Not since it was made clear that I was no longer interested in being his mistress.”
His jaw dropped and Dani chuckled. “I grew a bit tired of him treating me as a possession and not an equal.” She had ignored that fact for a long time but once she had Doc reconnected it was something that began to eat at her, something she had kept to herself.
“Why don’t you call me and we’ll catch up soon. In the meantime I’ll see if I can find whatever hole your father is hiding in.” She gave him another hug and then headed in the direction of Viv to meet with Murdoch.
Doc’s features remained impassive, no hint of what simmered beneath bubbling through. Idly he wondered if Bacchus had pieced himself back together yet and was briefly tempted to introduce himself to his son - effectively ruining Danae’s charade. That, however, would be childish and would ruin their work in this place. Instead, he’d casually mention Comus in passing to Gabriel, that would do the trick.
While he was busy imagining the chaos his brother would unleash on the poor schmuck talking to his better half, he followed the petite vampire to the back of the club, to a large room that opened with double doors. He had to force himself not to hesitate in moving through them by what he saw.
The fear and despair was palpable, and he waded into it like warm water as cages of people, human and Other, Dark and Light, rose along the walls to either side of him.
His cheek twitched as the little vampire told Dani to take her pick, his eyes on the distant expression of a Fae child, no older than Galen.
“You’re lucky you’re a good fighter,” Viv quipped as they dragged his opponent, the half wolf man, to one of the few empty cages and tossed him gracelessly inside. “Otherwise you’d have been ours.” She looked to Dani as if she was speaking of a purse or other accessory. “I’m so jealous.”

“Well, what can I say?” Danae smirked at her old friend and glanced back toward the ring. “It was high time I took a little vengeance out on one of his own.” The look that Comus gave her showed his approval, just as she knew it would. There were times when she had embraced a much darker side of herself when she had been fully entrenched in Bacchus’s world.
He leaned in to whisper something to her when the crowd around them fell silent. They both turned their attention back to the ring and Dani had to force herself to remain looking indifferent. Watching Murdoch move around the ring, just out of the wolf’s grasp made her pulse quicken. That darker part of her wanted to see him stop toying with his opponent and put and end to him. It had nothing to do with her ability to sense the sins of others, this was purely a want to see her partner exert his strength over another being.
“Yes, I see why you keep him around.” Danae’s eyes remained on Doc this time as she spoke. “You don’ t now the half of it. He’s very very good at taking orders, even if he clearly hates it. And that makes it all the better.”
“Then perhaps I might need to borrow him.” Dani chuckled but there was nothing lighthearted about it. “Or you could just join us later.” She knew that Comus would decline, their relationship never crossing that line, and that it would move him off of the topic.
This time, with the crowd silent around them, Murdoch couldn’t help but hear Danae’s words. Aggravation bubbled up in him, spurred on to dull anger as she offered the stranger to join them. Suddenly, there was a crack! Followed by a thud as Murdoch knocked his opponent unconscious with barely any more effort than he’d already shone. He wasn’t even sweating when he stilled.
“It’s a fight to the death.” A vampire pointed out, one of the bouncers who’d kept the crowd back.
“There’s no sport in killing an unworthy opponent.” Or honor, but he didn’t think a single soul in the place cared about honor. Ignoring the grumbling and arguments, he glanced at Dani and her friend, eyes narrowing slightly as he recognized the man by features alone before Paul came crowing with amusement into the ring.
“That was some spectacle!” he grinned, smacking Doc on the shoulder and waving Dani over.
“Now that we’ve seen what your boy here is capable of, we can set something proper up.” The vampire said. Doc had to stop himself from rolling his eyes as he was referred to as ‘boy’. Maybe it was because of his sudden irritation, but he wondered how the people around him would react if they knew just who he was. “Next Wednesday, 8 PM. I’ll call you with the details.” He gestured towards the young vampire that they’d interacted with earlier. “Viv will give you your reward if you’ll follow her.”

Danae’s head tilted slightly as she watched the fight begin. She had no fear for Murdoch and she had to make sure that showed. Appearance was everything in places like this.
“Well if it isn’t my favorite Fury!” Her gaze darted toward the sound of the familiar voice and when she confirmed that it was indeed Comus. He was the last person she would have expected to find in this place, least of all in America. She grinned and pulled her wings back in, holding her arms open for a hug as he walked over to her. While he might have been on of Bacchus’s sons, he’d been one of her closest friends and favorite people.
“Comus, love. What are you doing here?” She asked after kissing him on either cheek. Dani wondered if he knew about Doc yet, although Bach had never been much for sharing his failures.
“I’m just passing through.” He put his arm around her waist and turned them to look back at the fight. “I’d ask the same of you, but I’m more interested in this little Peri that you seem to have ensnared.”
For a few moments it seemed like the fight was over before it began. Murdoch ducked and dodged, but the wolf landed several staggering blows that had the crowd howling for blood. Of course there was no contest but he didn’t want them to know that, and allowed the wolf to land several more hits as he dug his feet in and stood as a pillar of indifference, his arms and fists raised to protect his vulnerable spots.
Distantly he registered Danae talking, but he knew better than to let it draw his attention - he’d given enough of a show. Dipping to the side suddenly, he hit the wolf with the flat of his palms, shoving him and throwing him off balance. The move came so suddenly that many of the onlookers didn't realize the turn of events, nor did the wolf. He scrambled up angrily, running wildly at Murdoch though not one of his hits landed. After a few moments, the crowd had fallen into a stunned silence as they watched Doc move fluidly, the wolf’s exertion the loudest sound in the room.

Danae nodded after taking each man in herself. It was a good choice, of course. She turned to the vampires and pointed to the man that Doc had chosen. “We’ll go with this one.”
“Such a nice choice.” The vampire grinned and held his arm out toward one of the rings. The wolf made his way quickly over to it while the others in the room moved out of their way. “Don’t let him hurt you too much. That’ll be my job later tonight.” When they got to the ring, she spread her wings out, the people around her moving further away just as she had hoped.
Murdoch shot her a sour look and paused outside of the ring as the wolf began to stretch to the cheers and jeers of the crowd as they bustled about placing bets. Pulling his shirt off, a hush seemed to settle over the onlookers before they began to buzz again, even more energetically than before. The glimmering golden veins swept across his fair freckled skin in spirals and arcs, clustering at his back where his wings, were they visible, would sprout, though he had no intention of showing them here.
Folding his hoodie, he placed it carefully on his stool and ducked into the ring. There was no bell to signify the start of the fight and the wolf landed a clean right hook the moment Murdoch’s feet hit the mat.
