LUCKY FOR YOU i've already gone on a huge ass rant about my hones here! But also lucky for you theres some new mental illnesses been cooking up for a while now sooooo YIPPEE!
alright so first!
the herd mentality. Typically Earthmovers form herds anywhere from two to five members, mostly to cover their blind spots, or in larger herds, to form a full defensive circle where they dont have to worry about their rear ends or their sides (typically they only form what's called a Shield when they either have a younger less experienced earthmover or one of the filly/colt class with them.
Most of the time herds consist of sibling machines or even mother/daughter machines (or father/son machines, though this term is hardly ever used for earthmovers for reasons i will explain later), the outlier is the massive megaherd of the wastes of North America, which consisted of fifteen unrelated Earthmovers (Rarefraction included and his herd included), this megaherd was formed with one reason and one reason only, to fucking obliterate Immolation, who had claimed just about the whole of south Canada to herself.
One of the other most notable herds is Whalefall's, which consisted of herself, her sister Starshine, her colt Cyclone and the quake sisters, Divergant, Convergent and Transform along with the occasional Betylle (who belongs to my bestie Bex). Their claim to fame comes from Whalefall beating the everloving SNOT out of Pyroclastic to the point where he actively lost rank and standing within the wider Earthmover community
Now, expanding further on that. Standing. Earthmover standing is strange. They prize both new *and* older members (with the exception of Plateau class). Elders, often called Matriarchs due to their battle experience and their abilities to stay relevant and still fight despite the many years of service (the most famed Matriarch is Geyser, while not the eldest, is sure up there in age and has the scars to prove it, along with surviving one of her legs being blown clean off and her brain actually being exposed to open air. For younger Earthmovers, the rites come from beating the Earthmover made before them in a fair fight, while often not to the death, it did often result in a momentary collapse, which then evolved into the prior grounding the former and placing their javelin behind the back of the neck where the head itself meets it.
This tradition and rite evolved fairly early on, when around about sixty Earthmovers were made.
Now, Pyroclastic, notably, failed this trial, mostly due to is from the get go hot headed nature. He rushed in before Pompeii and Immolation finished coming up with a plan and instead decided to rush Whalefall the second he caught wind of her heartbeat. Which, didnt end well at all despite the size, weight and firepower advantage he had. Whalefall's experience along with her build allowed her to get the best of him.
Onto the mother/daughter machine part of Earthmover everything. Earthmovers are almost always referred to by she/her, with it/its followed soon after. They/them is uncommon but not rare. He/him is where it gets interesting. He/him is used in only two (technically three) situations. When an Earthmover is young, or when they are disgraced (rarely will an Earthmover be born and immediately go "yep! he/him for me!", Rarefraction, Benjamin and Eruption three such cases). All young Earthmovers before they either make their first kill, raze their first city or best their predecessor are often referred to as he/him, unless they are apart of the filly/colt class, to which the adoptive herd will choose for them,
Pyroclastic, due to his immense failure with fighting Whalefall, was almost immediately demoted and thrown down the social ladder like Big G did with Luci-boy Himself. Which didnt end well for the poor bastard due to general bullying off kills, general hostility and the inability for dream about forming a herd. Ever.
Due to his failure, Peii and Immolation were also almost dragged down with him, however, Peii willingly resigned to his fate with his brother, opting to go more the pacifist route anyway. Immolation, on the other hand, went out swinging and actually managed to fell one of the older Matriarchs (while not the first four made, named Damnation, Godless, Skyblotter and Ilk the one she domed was probably apart of the first eight deployed) and re-earned what Pyro had lost, and then proceeded to re-earn it a million times over by clearing house in Canada.
Though eventually Pyroclastic re-earned his honor and standing by wiping out multiple herds, including those made to hunt him himself down, though he maintained his pronouns and refused to change them. This also earned his nickname the Burning Devil. He earned that nickname a dozen times over his entire life, and triple earned that nickname during the Long Night and the Climate Disaster there after
And now onto something slightly different. This this strange au/canon whatever the hell this fucking is. Take? Yeah. In this strange ass take on the ultrakill timeline, theres three Mover class machines, the Earthmovers we all know and love, the Bunkers (sometimes called Pitchmovers) and something called the Trenchmovers (this one is loosely based off concept another friend of mine made, hi Silver i havnt forgotted about Toba ever).
Bunkers are the inverse of an Earthmover in a sense, they are massive, sprawling, underground machines buried under dozens of meters of concrete, lead and whatever else that existed thats bullet proof. The most famed of all the Bunkers is the ABN, Australian Bunker Network, which was a series of four (and what would've been five), massive bunkers designed to house most of Australia's populations and industry, this included blood and the actual Mothermachines pumping out warmachines. Anyway Bunkers were a decent convergent evolution, being nigh impossible to infiltrate by ground machine, and were only really able to be breached by an Earthmover looking to get the juicy innards inside, this however, is a massive pain in the ass due to their collective defensive systems.
Now, the Trenchmovers were built as a direct counter, but not quite a usurper, to the Earthmovers. They're more squat, closer to the ground and are in general more like walking fortresses than walking weapon platforms like Earthmovers are. Trenchmovers are less offense and more defense, designed to hunker down and outlast whatever was attacking before going in for the kill themselves. The sole reason why they never really took off like Earthmovers is is a mix of cost, resource and the fact that Earthmovers found out very early on that they could wedge their head under a Trenchmover and flip them onto their backs, like a tortoise, leaving the far softer underbelly exposed. Trenchmovers were typically used as Earthmover deterrents, and were made by what was left of the greater South American powers. They'd typically be deployed in teams of five (opposed to Earthmovers deployed teams of four) and forming a literal blockade.
Most Trechmovers starved to death during the Long Night, while others did survive, they did so in a state of torpor and have been unable to wake from said sleep, even when the sun rose again and the cloud cover cleared.
Actually i should also ramble about Whalefall's herd aswell. Whalefall was seen as the Matriarch of the herd, despite the fact Starshine was older than her by about fifty-ish years (and Starshine herself is a fairly old Earthmover, back before the javelin design was fully nailed down)
Whalefall often took the lead in both fights and while traveling, mostly due to her swan neck and her calmer temperament. She hailed for peace or quite passage often, more often with the excuse of fighting being a waste of blood, time and honor. Why fight a small herd looking for sunny pastures when there's a Supreme Class not even forty kilometers away rearing for a fight? This often put the group in far better standing between both solo Earthmovers and herds, thus wasting little blood and ground fleets with skirmishes
The megaherd of North America however wasnt as passive, and often suffered from skirmishes between members over who led what, who got to eat first, who got to rest. It was uneasy but the firepower the herd provided for one another was unrivaled. The exception to this is once again Rarefraction's herd, which consisted of himself, his accidentally adopted filly named Orbit and his adoptive sisters, Calamity, Catastrophe and the Matriarch Cataclysm (which fun fact, Calamity is the Earthmover Benjamin is fighting against in 7-4)
Actually lemme talk about Rarefraction and how him and his herd came to be. So Rarefraction was an oddbod of an Earthmover. Golden retriever energy. He'd often playbow and try to engage play behavior with other Earthmovers, even when they were trying to kill his ass dead.
This went on for five years, trying to initiate play with others, getting his ass kicked for it, giving up then going about his rite of passage, winning and then returning to goofing around.
Out of all the Earthmovers he's seen and met, the three Cs were the sole ones that actually reciprocated his playbow, very much to his delight. Catastrophe is to blame for this, she thought it was an honor bow and met it, only to rise back up and watch that idiot start jumping for joy like a deer. Which caused a mental blank untill she decided, Fuck it, and joined in.
Which is very funny considering that the three Cs were a ruthless herd. Three bad bitches and this whiteboy they adopted. Three wolves and a pomeranian. Three goth bitches and their girlypop sparkle sister
Rarefraction and Catastrophe were inseparable untill Betylle came on the scene and goot lord Rarefraction caught the case of Supreme Down Bad. Which Cata found absolutely hilarious, his other sisters less so but still laughed about it when he got slapped in the face multiple times by Betylle's javelin.
Orbit was accidentally adopted when the herd got into a very nasty fight with another Earthmover, who was acting oddly aggressive while they were just passing through, they were broadcasting an active notice they were on a retcon mission and were looking for no fights, only to come under fire while passing over a flood plain.
Course all four fired back, absolutely obliterated the opposing Earthmover, went to lay claim to the kill, only to find out oops! Filly, that was a new mother who didnt know what to do and was overly aggressive due to that.
Rarefraction took pity and adopted the poor thing because uh. Smol

asking about some movers: is Pompeii in Hell? if so, will Pyroclastic be able to reunite with him?
Its the worlds worst case of yes. Despite the fact that Peii was a staunch pacifist while he was alive, to the point where it did infact prevent him from being cast into Violence like the rest of his kind, it however didnt fully save him from being sent to Hell anyway.
Peii ended up manifesting in Fraud due to his tendency to spoof his brothers radio signature and even going so far as to mimic his broadcast and war horn, ending fights before they would even begin. Because i mean, when your brother is like THAT, whats a little bluffing to make sure you and your seed vault of a wife (Habitat) dont get blasted to kingdom come by artillery and counter earthmovers deployed in your direct path.
Course this also means that Peii and Pyro and now officially and rather permanently separated by who the fuck knows how many kilometers of rock and Ten Trillion Tons Of Miffic Bitch (Hell Herself). While this isnt abnormal for pacifist earthmovers to be dumped in Fraud and Treachery (in Habitat's case) or Lust in Rarefraction's case, there have been methods of contacting one another in other layers through Hell Energy....
and also using poor Eruption as the means of actual communication for the layers below Violence (barring Hell behaves and has the Circles in their standard formation)
Either way the tragedy doesnt stop there for the two brothers, because this is Hell we're talking about, and whatever She says goes Her way inside Her layers. Hell basically rejiggled Peii's whole entire everything so that his little stunt up on Earth while alive is now his whole everything and i mean EVERYTHING.
What little traits he had that seperated him from Pyro have been scrubbed clean, his warhorns sound like him, his voice sounds like him, even his Reward Center got fucked with to be an exact copy of Pyro. This, also, very much includes hims coms signature. So as far as everyone is aware, thats a false signal coming from Fraud because holy shit two Pyroclastics? No thank you. Most of the Earthmovers are split on how to go about it, because A) this is either a horrid trick Hell is pulling in order to draw out Pompeii or B) Hell pulled a NASTY one on Cyclone and the Pyroclastic that he knows is a mimic and the real one is down there in Fraud (or perhaps even swapped at somepoint)
Which is to say, Pyro has no idea Peii is down there, assumes his just refusing to talk to him, avoiding him and has gone utterly no contact. And Habitat down in Treachery has no idea her husband is one layer above her with easy access.
Now the two's sister on the other hand. Well. Immolation knows everything. And she wont ever say shit from fuck to anyone, she hates her brothers enough to keep this from them, and generally detests her own kind enough to not break the word and organize a break and enter Fraud when the circle is perpendicular to Violence. If Pyro ever finds this out, Immolation is going to get clobbered not only by him, but the quake sisters aswell (Divergent, Convergent and Transform) and Hell will subsequently have a new, permanent gaping hole between the two layers.
Now theres also one other major problem with Peii being in Fraud. And thats the fact that Blackhead is also in that layer, and she has one helova score to settle with Pyroclastic. Luckily through either divine intervention or Hell not wanting Blackhead to get any closure before Cutter makes it down there, neither have crossed paths nor picked up on eachothers signature. Which, if they do, theres not a force in both hell and heaven that will stop Peii from mauling his way out of Fraud and Blackhead will channel every single soul and wrath of every ultrakill speedrunner to get to him
However luckily there ARE a few AUs where the two do reunite, and theres always MirageVerse where the two get to stay together. Everyone give it up for the Better AU and the Jailbreak Au

AND THEN I FORGOT TO RESPOND FOR A HANDFULL OF MONTHS O O P S (chat we gotta eradicate ADHD from the earth its stopping me from rambling about my blorbos)
OKAY SO CODEX AND RAREFRACTION. Two sides of the same coin yet a singular face. The two are very VERY interesting on the account that they are the exact same machine. And i mean the EXACT same machine.
So. What happened?
First we must yap about the earthmovers themselves and several components of them and their brains. Mind you ALL of this is purely based off of the easter egg inside Benjaminâs skull in game and i WISH i was joking
So. The thing about earthmovers is that their brains are a solid mix of regular brain matter and an auxiliary component thats more traditionally machine flavoured. However the machine part of said brain in on itself holds several components and more importantly an entire control unit. During the early prototype stages of earthmover development, an entirely seperate machine was used as a form of quasi directional unit and prompter for the mover itself.
Typically these machines housed incredible computing prowess that allowed them to man their âbrainlessâ mechs. However, they had the increasing habit of going rogue and were susceptible to remote hackings via opposing forces. That fact alone nearly had the entire earthmover class of machines put on ice as a whole.
However the breakthrough came with the solid integration of those previous pilot machines. The breakthrough involved taking the machine itself, then through induced injections and hormonal inserts, would physically grow the rest of the brain from it, and then on further growing the rest of the earthmoverâs organics and building the shell around it. This exponentially cut down both build time and ai gestation time, allowing earthmovers, in theory, to be drafted, grown, built and deployed in a matter of months opposed to years of the early prototypes.
Those pilots ended undergoing through a small handful of iterationâs before landing on what they are now, and were subsequently renamed to Reward Centers. They would be responsible for all and i mean ALL of the hormonal mixing and adrenaline injections via a component held within the chest of the machine itself. These things are the sole reason why earthmovers fight, they inject all that juicy juicy dopamine directly into the grey matter itself. Without the Reward Centers. Earthmovers wouldâve gained zero joy from fighting, and subsequently, wouldâve ended the war outright through peace (after all, those ARE mighty big brains up in there)
And for once in my life. I have An (1) image to go with all of this rambling. Here we have some of the main gaggleâs reward centers (ignore how Whalefall has legs. Thats an AU thing shhhhhh)
Most Reward Centers look like a mix of Pyro and Whalefall. The main head followed by the Crucible, the ribcage, control unit arms and then the billions of wires and tubes needed to deliver those hormones into the brain. Out of the entire mover, the brains and the casing the Reward Centers were held in was some of the most reenforced bits of any given Earthmover, and were known as Tombs. Rarefraction was no different.
Anyway Rarefraction himself. Pompeii, Pyroclasticâs brother, was considered a saint, but Rarefraction is the equivalent of every single golden retriever up in heaven. He was one of the few Earthmovers that would initiate play with his herdmates, and would often broadcast music on old radio channels just for the fun of it. He was UTTERLY smitten with another earthmover called Betylle (a friends oc. Hi Bex your honse is being mentioned) and more often than not got slapped for it. Anyway.
Rarefraction was a sure fire friendly in the eternal war, his herd abnormally passive along with him. Course they could fucking Kick Ass if they were prompted, and they often were by other escalation classes looking for a quick meal. Anyway. Rarefraction himself is an escalation with two very unique gimmicks.
One, his lack of a traditional shield so to speak. See, most of the time the killing blow from a javelin isnt the lightning itself, but more so the jolt of the impact jostling the brain in such a way that the Reward Center would haemorrhage and essentially bleed out inside their tomb. Rarefraction combated this through two things: One) he had far FAR thicker legs than most Earthmovers of his status, allowing him far far more stability than others were afforded. Two) at the bottom of his feet he had rubber pats, allowing the lighting to directly ground itself in the event he was hit.
Course that leaves his city up on his back exposed right? Wrong. Rarefraction essentially had two gigantic physical shields rising up along his stern and starboard sides, essentially turning him into a very very strange turtle. Unless you somehow snuck up behind him, the sole way to land a hit on his city was to attack him while he himself was repositioning his neck after and attack. Which was nearly impossible to do so because of his second gimmic
Two: Rarefraction had a decoy javelin. Okay well i say âdecoyâ but it very much did work and it packed a punch like all escalations did. But it wasnt his main method of attack. No. That would be the laser canon in his mouth.
Pictured here (once again hi Betylle), one can see his odd snoot shaped head. Rarefraction was one of the sole earthmovers who could look down without having to bend his whole neck. Anyway, with his head shape comes with the wonderful ability to do what he does best. Godzilla atomic breathing his opponents. Which worked really well in his favour considering that being laser beamed via the mouth was so far out of left field for most earthmovers it caused a glitch in their targeting systems.
Anyway. As much of a over excited puppy Rarefraction was all his life. He wasnt stupid by any short means. And was one of the last few Earthmovers to die out during the long night. However, it wasnt through luck(like Whalefall and Starshine) or sheer force of will (like Pyroclastic).
Rarefraction survived because he cut away what was the most energy intensive. Which was the rest of his entire body. He clawed himself OUT of his own brain and left the Earthmover portion of himself to die. The fact he didnt die from the shock alone shouldâve been proof that God was still around at the time because he was loosing blood like no tomorrow. However. Zipties are a universal commodity and he quite literally ziptied vital arteries and veins closed in order to prevent catastrophic blood loss.
Another fun quirk about the Reward Centers is that they were one of the few machines to have blood makers in built. Meaning for as much blood as Rarefraction lost when he cut himself free, he wouldâve regained it eventually. Unforchies he did have to cannibalise his own flesh in order to regain said macro elements. This only slightly fucked him up. And because of this, this is where Rarefraction and Codex fully âsplitâ
Codex bruit force survived the Long Night and the subsequent New Peace by surviving off his own corpse and self modifying himself in more and more advanced ways. During the New Peace however he essentially hid it out in a bunker network with a small blood vault untill the Hell expeditions arose, to which he then took rapid advantage of that mini machine boom and modified himself further into what would later become the basal machines for mindflayers.
Anyway he lived a relatively cushy life helldiving (lmao), slowly picking his way down to the lower levels, especially Violence for reasons that are distinctively obvious before the Machine Uprising and subsequent Machine Wave happened, to which he realised. Oh Fuck. I still VERY much look like a Reward Center, and all of these feral, blood drunk, hell possessed machines would VERY much like to get their hands on me.
This is where Codex ends up taking the true shape we know and love him today. Essentially. Twenty years of layering on plastics to hide his shape and silhouette came to fruition. That fat bod is NOT just for aesthetic, it very very much has a trillion practical uses, and said uses is hiding all of those hundreds of wires and tubes and those distinctive four arms.
Eventually, Codex does finally make it down to Violence along with the streetcleaners that somehow ALWAYS fucking weasel their way into the lower layers. Anyway. Low and behold⊠no Rarefraction. Every other Earthmover was manifested in Hell, why wouldnt they, they were manifestations of Death itself for so long. Course scratching his head Codex never did end up realising why his OWN dead fucking body never manifesting in the one layer that was all but custom made for his kind. Untill he remembered that compared to the rest of his kin, he simply loved life. Which means. He wouldâve gone to Lust. Lucky the climb back up is easier than the decent down when youâve got Hell Energy backing you up.
Low and behold, Rarefraction hiding out in between the buildings of the city, doing his veeeery best to look like a skyscraper (which, it worked), Rarefraction lives. Which was strange. Considering Codex was also alive. As it turned out, Earthmover blood is really REALLY soul rich. So while the mind was all transferred to Codex, the soul remained mostly within Rarefraction with little to no memories.
Thats how the paradox exists between the two. The same soul but different. The exact same single sided coin with two faces.
Course, at any point, Rarefraction could shed himself of the Earthmover shell. And Codex could take his place back. And it would be distinctively easier now that theres two of them. Surely this information wont come in handy when a certain machine razes Hell and causes the encores to rise from the bloodied ashes of each layer of Hell :)
