You are the only person I know of who has done any academic research on GIFs. So: how do you pronounce the abbreviation?

Me personally? Hard G.

For me it's intuitive, based on the pronunciation of "gift". (Ironically, "gift" in Norwegian is with a soft G, and means "married" or "poison"!)

I've also studied linguistics a bit, and in general it doesn't matter how something was originally coined/intended. What matters is how it's used. Right now both are common, and so both are correct.

I really don't have a hard stance on it beyond that.
