The Velvet Underground - White Rock Lake, Dallas, Texas, October 15, 1969
Doom & Gloom From The Tomb turned 10 years old yesterday, which is crazy. And, as if the gods themselves were smiling down upon us all, someone pointed me in the direction of this newly surfaced footage of my favorite band, playing in Texas in 1969. In color! In the daylight! On a deck of some sort! This wouldâve been right at the time that the band was playing the End of Cole Avenue club, recordings of which showed up on Live 1969 (and subsequent bootlegs). Donât get tooooo excited, itâs silent and lasts for under a minute (starting around 7:40). But get excited! Considering thereâs virtually no film of the VU during this period, this is a dream come true. Watching Moe Tucker gleefully smacking the hell out of her drums in a NY Jets t-shirt ⊠well, thatâs priceless, dudes.Â
And hey, as if that isnât enough, some other VU ephemera made it out into the world last week, via this BBC radio program, hosted by Suzanne Vega. The title, âWalking the Wild Mind,â is a little wonky, but itâs definitely an interesting listen, with Mick Rock, Garland Jeffreys and others offering insight into the enigma of Uncle Lou. And at the end, thereâs a previously unheard snippet of Lou and John Cale harmonizing sweetly on a 1965 Pickwick demo of âIâm Waiting For The Man.â Letâs hope the archives start opening up with more regularity soon âŠÂ Â
