Rare video alert: Lee at a Carnival party in Italy! Have fun and try to guess which costume he wore before pressing play. (translation below)
Back to weekly LVC paintings and more! I'm excited because there are several things queued up so we should be good for at least the next couple months crazy I know

ermm doodles!?!?
There is something I really need to talk about, because I haven't seen a single person mention it and it's making me question my sanity… Did Lee make a point of spiking the lens every chance he got or am I crazy? Am I the only one who noticed? Okay, in some cases maybe you can blame the low resolution, some optical effect or his gaze being just an inch away from the camera, but I swear there are times when he’s just looking STRAIGHT into it. In motion it’s even more obvious.
Some notable examples in chronological order:
Screenshots from: 1. A Man Alone (1955) • 2. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) • 3-4. Day of Anger (1967) • 5. Beyond the Law (1968) • 6. Commandos (1968) • 7. El Condor (1970) • 8. Return of Sabata (1971)
The studies begin. Don't know how much I'll make but they'll serve as "quick" (not-so-quick I like to take my sweet time lol) exercises in between bigger projects
The purpose of this escapade is to highlight some of LVC's roles before his Spaghetti Western boom 🍝🤠

Small snippet about LVC from a biography of the musician Ivan Della Mea (1940-2009), in which he recalls his time in Rome's jet set scene during the 60s:
There I met and spent time with Moravia, Dacia Maraini, Pasolini, and Volonté, though the coolest neighbours were Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef. The latter always made me laugh because, while we were used to his sinister, tough-guy image on screen, he was actually a very sweet person, the idol of all the kids on the beach.
Now, to my knowledge Clint Eastwood never actually lived in Italy, at least not long enough for anyone to call him a neighbour, so I wouldn't fully vouch for Della Mea's accuracy here. But it's too sweet a story not to believe, so let's just go with it.

Thank you for the request 🙂↕️
The devil has got the angel !
Short LVC profile from an Italian magazine that published adventure comics. Nothing new in the article, but I haven't seen this photo of him in a tie before... so the ordeal of convincing the guy who sold this to me to break up a lot of a hundred magazines just for one issue was worth it, I guess.
LEE VAN CLEEF: A SCREEN "VILLAIN" The terrifying blue blade of a sharp razor gleams between half-closed eyelids:* it is the gaze of a man who knows how to hate without being blinded by that hatred, a man who knows how to kill while calculating the risk of being killed, as if his own death were no more important than that of his enemy. This is Lee Van Cleef. His angular face and his lean physique, full of restrained strength like a spring eternally on the verge of snapping, make millions of spectators hold their breath. Lee only has to appear on screen for everyone to be fascinated by that motionless, yet terribly expressive face. Born in Somerville, New Jersey, to a family of Dutch descent, Lee Van Cleef lived much of his life outdoors; he worked as a guide for hunters and fishermen in the Maine forests, a lifestyle that allowed him to strengthen his physique to an exceptional degree. He began his artistic career as a stage actor in a touring company. Later, he played the role of an antagonist in the unforgettable High Noon. That performance paved the way for his success. Since then, hundreds of films have followed, including: The Desperado, Gun Battle at Monterey, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, The Big Gundown, Blood for a Silver Dollar, For a Few Dollars More, Wanted, The Two Magnificent Tramps, Day of Anger and Death Rides a Horse.**
The cover photo was taken in Milan on April 10, 1968, where Lee was attending an event for the release of Beyond the Law.

* I wonder if descriptions like "blue blade" for his eyes started the rumor that Lee had heterochromia. ** Whoever wrote this managed to list two Giuliano Gemma films that Lee isn’t in and mention TGTBTU twice, once under its working title (The Two Magnificent Tramps).
