do you have a favorite COTW character?

YES! It's Shuan.

I'm so utterly fascinated by him and his constant contradictions. He is a really reliable fighter, yet we see him lazing around most of the time. He says he lost the love for his mother, yet she is always the one he approaches the most. He was horribly (ab)used by the Elders, yet he doesn't hold a grudge against them. He calls himself a failure, yet he saved the Mud Whale from Nous Geraki. And he calls Ouni a monster, yet Shuan sees himself as the bigger monster and is actually somewhat jealous that Ouni seems more human than him.

And all that doesn't stem from a typical Anime trope of him being not true to his feelings or being afraid of them. This is because he genuinely doesn't understand his feelings.

I think Shuan is one of the best written characters in the show and his development (mainly through interacting with Ouni) happens so smoothly and genuine that I can't help but love him.

Even outside his deep characterisation he is just really fun to write and think about. I would have loved if at some point he would have shared more of his inner workings or maybe the knowledge he seemed to possess. I don't know how much he knew about the creations of the Nouses or the working of the world, but he certainly knew much more than most People of the Mud Whale. I remember him talking about the ocean before we even arrived in Amonlogia. Did the Elders know about the ocean as well or did Shuan learn that from the experiment? I'd love to know the answer.

I'd like to think that in an alternate timeline where Shuan wasn't abducted by Nous Geraki, he would have been able to take on some advisor role to Suou about the vast world they are about to face.

On top of that every extra scene with Ouni or Ginshu would have been amazing.

Speaking of them, Ouni and then Ginshu are my favourite Characters after him. And while I know they are not really a trio, those three have an amazing and hilarious chemistry between them.

Ouni probably is no surprise to hear. I just love the whole Daimonas lore and interactions we got of those two. As for Ginshus, she is just a ray of sunshine and while she is not written to be that deep and more of a comic relief, she is still so precious to me. Though I must say: I prefer her characterisation in the stage play from what I've seen and understood.

I also want to mention Itia as one of my favourites. Bless her kind heart even after everything she went through. I'm so immensely happy for her happy ending. She really deserves it and I was certain Orca wouldn't make it that far.

A theory on the Apostasia

Hello COTW fandom! I am here to provide a rough theory about the Apostasia, including their history, the daimonas creation process, as well as how Apostasia are selected. All images included will be based on the weebcentral translation of the manga. If there are any discrepancies, please dm @runawaythoughts on discord.

Firstly, I believe it’s important to brief what we know about the Apostasia. Their name in Greek translates to “apostate”, which is a person who renounces a religious or political belief or principle. Orca and Lykos’ family are known descendants of the Apostasia bloodline. Their family heirlooms include Hammy, who is the rudder for Karcharias, along with a key to a Nous fountain room. I believe that the Apostasia were the ones in possession of Karcharias before it was taken by the Allied Empire. 

Before crashing Karcharias into Geraki, Orca states that “the current rudder, the child of the Nous Karcharias, is controlled by the emperor. It won’t go against the emperor’s wishes. It will now be a showdown between the current rudder, Marmargyas, and Afti, whom you call Hammy.”

This tells us several things about the structure of Nous ships. Ships like Skylos, with nous children like Olivinis as their primary rudders, are under Skia’s control. Meanwhile, rudders like Kokalo and Afti, are free from Skia’s influence. It is not a wild leap to assume that once Skia came into possession of a new Nous, he would take away their rudder and replace it with a Nous child. 

In addition to this, we know the Apostasia had access to a Nous with psychi. For those who don’t remember, psychi is the mass of souls created by a Nous after absorbing life force. This is necessary for the creation of Daimonas. Because all Nous originally ate life force, not emotion, it’s logical to assume that the Apostasia used a non-imperial Nous in order to create the first Daimonas.

Our most likely candidate for this Nous is Karcharias. Not only does Orca have Karcharias’ rudder (and presumably it’s key), we see flashbacks of his ancestors worshiping an unnamed Nous in chapter 70.

Due to this, I believe the Apostasia originally started out as a group of people living on Karcharias. They desired to create a creature that could destroy Nous, something considered sacrilegious. In order to preserve their knowledge, they transmitted their experiments via dreams as seen in chapter 70 with Rasha and Taisha. After being taken over by the Allied Empire, Afti and the key to Karcharia’s fountain room became family heirlooms. However, their story does not end there.

Our introduction to Daimonas comes in chapter 18 during Orca’s trial. His claims that “after the Rain of Kathartirio, our country sought to seize supremacy and the power of the Nouses created a most powerful soldier. But they were too powerful. They gained the ability to destroy even that which they worshipped, the Nouses. So, in fear, our country sealed them off.” His wording implies that the Daimonas were an effort to create a kind of super soldier for the Allied Empire. We know the Allied Empire has done several experiments on Nous and soldiers from the Geraki attack. Tree-zombie-soldiers that cannot die and a ship that can infect other Nous like a disease are all very helpful in battle.

I believe the Apostasia were allowed to persist for some time under the supervision of Skia or the Ekklesia in hopes of creating the ultimate soldier. Unbeknownst to them, the Apostasia were hoping to create a person that could kill Nouses. When the first Daimonas was successfully created, they were deemed heretics, and became heavily oppressed. Because of this, it’s incredibly likely that Daimonas and Apostasia are exonyms given to them by the Allied Empire. Dyo always identified herself as “ from a family that bears angels.” The word Apostasia is never even spoken in her dialogue.

Now, this is where I propose a theory about the creation of Daimonas. According to Aima in chapter 93, there are four conditions for the creation of a Daimonas: a key, the powerful sasa of the Mud Whale’s chief, Ouni, and the apostasia girl (Lykos.) I believe this isn’t entirely accurate information. Logically speaking, having another Daimonas present cannot be a requirement for the creation of a new Daimonas. There was no such thing for Miden’s creation. We also know for a fact that there have been Daimonas before Miden, so “sasa from the Mud Whale’s chief” is impossible, given the Mud Whale has only existed for ~102 years. It’s also impossible for a blood Apostasia to be a requirement, because Dyo had no children. It’s impossible for Taisha or Rasha to be her direct descendants. 

I believe Apostasia are not a bloodline. The only explicit Apostasia in the story, Dyos, expresses her commitment to her 7 sisters even though they are not blood related. Therefore “family” doesn’t necessarily mean blood relations.

Taisha, Rasha, and Lykos all aid in the creation of Daimonas during the main story. Notably, all three of these women share a connection with Dyos. We know for a fact that Apostasia were proficient in dream magic. This is how they were able to transmit Shuan’s experiment to Rasha across spacetime. During Shuan’s flashback, we see that Rasha and Taisha shared the same dream about Dyos. I believe Apostasia likely refers to spiritually powerful women that are “chosen” by a Nous or previous Apostasia. Rasha and Taisha were chosen by Dyos, while Lykos was chosen by Thanatas. In order to create a Daimonas, one must have access to a Nous’ fountain room where the psychi resides. This is why a key is required. The only other requirements are powerful sasa and an Apostasia. Traditionally the sasa should come from the Apostasia, but it can be substituted with someone else’s. 

In short:

Apostasia and Daimonas are derogatory exonyms created by the Allied Empire

Apostasia originally began as a group of spiritually powerful people living on Karcharias that wanted to create a Daimonas

They were eventually taken over by the Allied Empire. Karcharias’ rudder Afti was replaced with the Nous child Marmarygias. 

The Apostasia were allowed to persist under the Allied Empire under the condition they created a super soldier

It was discovered that Daimonas were capable of killing Nous

Apostasia went into hiding, keeping their practices alive via rebellion and dream magic

Apostasia are not a bloodline, but rather a word for spiritually powerful women chosen by Nous or other members of the school of thought

why do you love Itia + headcanons about her?

Oh, many, many reasons.

I will start this off with a little fun fact because I want to: Itia is actually the first member of what the fandom has affectionately dubbed the "Empire Polycule" that we meet in the manga! We see her even before Orca!

Now, onto reasons why I love her. I actually started the series pretty neutral about her, which turned into concern for her because Orca was a flaming crimson flag in the first arc of COTW. I was originally afraid that her and Orca's romantic relationship was going to be a burning train-wreck, but it didn't turn out to be that way, and that is what originally made me pay closer attention to her character. Because being able to balance Orca, who by that point, was still the main antagonist of the series, seemed like a special kind of art to me at the time.

What I especially love about Itia is that we get so much character from her by means of very natural seeming and almost indirect characterisation. With her, unlike with other characters, I never had this moment where I was thinking her actions or character motivations didn't make sense (well, aside from maybe the mystery of her seemingly unending patience). She also manages to balance out the clashing forces of the Empire crew, which the group really needed. The dynamics between the people of that ship wouldn't work half so well without her there. Her backstory also allowed us to gaze into more of the Empire's history beyond the main land in merely a few pages, enhancing the world building, which is always a win in COTW.

She is also a power house and stronger than me, I have the biggest respect for her.

Now, onto the head canons! Some of these are rooted in canon evidence, some are just fun for me the think about.

Her eyesight on one of her eyes is noticeably worse than on the other side and it causes her to have a little bit of a lazy eye

She is around 21 in canon (we never learn her actual age in the manga )

(this is empire polycule but I will still add it) Post canon she makes sure to read to her son regularly, but Orca and Kannavi are always in the room too when she does, so really she just ends up reading to all of them

she is unsettled by open fire and prefers to keep lit candles within her light of sight at all times when she uses them

she has very neat, but surprisingly big handwriting

her favourite food is dates

Her and Liontari actually talked quite a lot while they were staying on Kacharias together and she genuinely cares about him a lot (that's her boy!)

Kannavi was the first one to know about her pregnancy and she asked him not to tell Orca because she wanted to do it at her own pace

A Pokemon only counts for itself, not its evolution line.

A Pokemon with multiple forms (like Zygarde) will only be counted for the specified form. A Pokemon with multiple appearances (like Spinda, Vivillon, Sylvally, etc.) count for all their appearances.

I'm literally doing this as a testament to my own depression that not everyone is lovable, so add that to the weight of this post's meaning.

Children of the Whales Timeline

Hello all! I just recently finished a reread of the entire manga. I noticed that the COTW wiki is severely out of date, so I decided to make a timeline for any people that would like it for theory crafting or fic writing reasons. For convenience’s sake, everything in this timeline will be dated in Telos Vrochi, or the Allied Empire’s official calendar. If one wishes to convert to Sand Exile years, simply subtract the year by 1306. If an event isn’t given an explicit date within the text, I do my best to create a rough estimate for when these events take place or to provide a range of possible years. I was going to add more birthdays, but there's too many characters for me to bother I'm sorry.

A Chakuro incarnation encounters a Kikujin incarnation in Taneya

0 Telos Vrochi

Nous arrive on planet earth where Kivotos will later stand. The same Chakuro incarnation dies in the immediate impact. This is presumably the Rain of Kathatirio, but it is never explicitly stated. For this reason I have placed it as 0 Telos Vrochi, which roughly translates to “after the rain.” 

252 Nous descended. By the end, only 10 living Nous remain (8 imperial battleships, Anthropos, Falaina) while the rest become Apolithoma. This does not align with what we see in flashbacks.

~14 Telos Vrochi

Chakuro’s incarnation encounters Skia. He tells Skia that humans are always happy, which will later inspire Skia’s plan for Kataklysmos. 

The Zakuro siblings attack Kivotos, intending to enslave them or sacrifice them to Nous Falaina

The chief of Kivotos sacrifices the sick and those unable to fight to Anthropos in order to obtain thymia in self defense. Chakuro’s incarnation dies in the attack.

Skia and Anthropos begin a war with the other Nouses, gaining control of Falaina, Skylos, Kacharias, Tigris, Geraki, Arkouda, and three other unspecified Nouses. The rest go dormant as Apolithoma. This could possibly be what the Rain of Kathario is, but I think that refers to when Nous arrived on the planet so???

Anthropos’ fingernails presumably fall on Kivotos during this time

No explicit date is given, but I am making my best guess based on the fact that Chakuro was 14 during the initial Mud Whale attack. Fuyuna’s death is clearly meant to parallel Sami’s death, so I think this is a fair assumption to make.

Skia’s war on other Nouses continues

The Imperial heartland is founded on top of Anthropos

Skia crowns himself emperor

The Ekklesia is founded

Orca, Lykos, and Dyo’s ancestors learn how to create Daimonas. These same ancestors send Rasha dreams of the Mud Whale’s impending massacre

Afti is removed as the rudder of Kacharias, being replaced with Marmarigias. Afti becomes a family heirloom for Dyo, Orca, and Lykos’ family.

The Jester bonus chapter takes place

~1270s through 1280s Telos Vrochi

The White Road Kingdom falls. Dyo receives her earrings from the prince of the White Road Kingdom.

Dyo’s parents and elder brother are executed

Dyo and her 7 adopted sisters smuggle sarka to the populace  

1298 Telos Vrochi

Ekato is captured by Ekklesia and reprogrammed. He leaks the plan of the rebellion.

Dyo and other rebellion members are captured. Their heads are shaved, their nails are torn off, and a third of the prisoners die on the voyage there. 

Byakuroku is allegedly born after touching down on Falaina because his mother was pregnant when she was captured. This doesn’t add up, since Byakuroku is supposed to be the same age as the Sand Exile calendar.

1306 Telos Vrochi

Sand exile calendar is created

Dyo becomes Mayor. Tower Pinnacle Committee, composed of Marked and Unmarked, is likely founded around this time.

Byauoroku should be born during this time

1316 Telos Vrochi

Miden is born

Ekato is executed by Miden

Kogare, Chakuro’s grandfather, is born

1322 Telos Vrochi

Byakuroku becomes mayoral candidate

The decision to hide the truth of Failaina stealing lives is made

Miden is killed by Byakuroku. On the same day, Dyo commits suicide by throwing herself into the sea 

Hakuji is born

Byakuroku becomes the 3rd mayor of the Mud Whale (He is probably the 2nd mayor, since there is no known mayor between Dyo and Byakuroku, but he is stated to be the 3rd)

The Mud Whale’s hand clasping tradition begins in order to prevent sasa from being spread

1358 Telos Vrochi

Taisha is born

1360 Telos Vrochi

Kuchiba is born

1371 Telos Vrochi

Masoh is born

Itia’s homeland is burnt down by Salinkari, assuming Itia is around 20 years old by the start of the story. I put the range within when Itia was born, to when she was seven, since it is unclear how old she was in her flashbacks.

Taisha becomes Mayor

Shuan’s father dies

November 11th: Taisha disappears, creating Ouni. This doesn’t add up, since we know Daimonas appear to be about 10 years old when they’re created. If one wishes to ignore this, Taisha should have disappeared during year 87 of the Sand Exile, or 1393 Telos Vrochi. Another explanation is that Ouni simply didn’t leave the Mitra until he was 10

1385 Telos Vrochi

Chakuro and Lykos are born

1390 Telos Vrochi

Kikujin is born

Masoh is likely married around this time. Sometime between now and 1399, he loses his daughter in an accident related to the Sea of Sand.

1392 Telos Vrochi

A bridge collapses in the Imperial Heartland, forcing Orca to save Lykos with thymia

Orca is scouted by a military officer and sent to Viola while Lykos is sent to military academy

Orca is injured in the siege on Viola

He is rescued by Albus and remains in Kitrino for 18 months

1393 through 394 Telos Vrochi

Kitrino was massacred sometime between 1893 and1894, depending on how Orca’s 18 months were paced out. 

Viola surrenders 

Orca is promoted to Prasino, granting him Sarka access. He does not share Sarka with Lykos.

Sami and Suou’s mother dies

A great flying occurs

July 3rd: Lykos is found and brought to the Mud Whale. Chakuro and Ouni are detained in the belly. ( Chakuro states they were held in the belly for 2 days, which would mean the great flying takes place on the 5th, but the math is being ignored for some reason)

July 8th: Great flying occurs

July 9th: First Mud Whale attack

July 10th: Elders attempt to sink Mud Whale

July 12th: Suou becomes mayor

July 15th: The Day the Sand Returns

July 17th: Second Mud Whale attack (It should technically be the 16th, because the second attack occurs exactly a week later after the first, but I have opted to default to what Chakuro’s records state.

July 20th: Mass funeral in Baleen Plaza

August 4th: Rochalitzo and crew arrive on mud whale

August 5th -15th: Orca’s trial takes place sometime during these dates.

August 16th: Mud Whale leaves Falaina’s cage

August 18th: Mud whale passes Tower of Time

August 19th - November 11th:

Atsali returns from the eighth sector with Kacharias and Orca leaves to chase after the mud whale

November

November 12th: Mud whale encounters Spitha ruins. 

November 12th -22nd: Shuan resigns from commander position, Ginshu nominated as new commander. Masoh dies the following day.

November 23rd: Masoh’s funeral

November 24th: Mud Whale arrives in Amonlogia. The Unmarked are held hostage.

November 25th: Mud Whale receives the news that they will become soldiers for Amonlogia. Chakuro and Ginshu are detained in the belly. Lykos escapes for Amonlogia.

November 26th: Orca arrives in Amonlogia, destroys the city, and steals Apolithoma / Kyma. Lykos and Ouni are captured. Orca declares independence from the Empire.

November 27th: Funeral for the dead takes place. That morning, Suou announces that they will not pursue Kacharias, and reveals the truth of the Marked’s short lifespans.

November 28th: Orca has his leg amputated by Kannavi. Shuan and Suou possibly meet that night, but it’s ambiguous as to when it takes place.

November 29th: Suou, Shuan, and Chakuro sneak onto Kacharias for the Ouni and Lykos rescue mission. Salinkari attacks The Mud Whale, destroying towers 2 & 3. Orca confronts Salinkari and gets married in the middle of the ongoing battle. Kacharias is crashed into Geraki in order to prevent the spread of Spiti.

1400 TELOS VROCHI

April

April 2nd: Towers 2 and 3 begin reconstruction. 

Mud Whale arrives in Kivotos, possibly on April 2nd but it's ambiguous. The Imperial Heartland sinks around the same time or soon afterwards. 

April 18th: Anthropos arrives in Kivotos. Chakuro and Lykos are captured by Skia. Falaina and Anthropos fuse into Thanatas. Chakuro holds Thanatas at bay until dawn the next morning.

April 19th: Thanatas crashes into Kivotos village. Liontari swallows Skia, becoming a pseudo-Nous. Thanatas is fossilized by the song of the Unmarked, which also breaks Shuan out of Anthropos’ control. A new Daimonas is born. Ouni solves it with a hug. Liontari is sucked into the abyss. Chakuro triggers Kataklysmos with his records. The battle ends by nightfall. 

The Mud Whale sinks into the sea of sand (presumably the following morning on April 20th, but is not explicitly confirmed)

April - September

Kivotos rebuilds its marriage 

The Mud Whale citizens establish an autonomous region next to Kivotos, also named Mud Whale.

Hamori and Tsuiri get married 

Amonlogian ships find 5 imperial battle ships on the sea of sand, rescuing 20k-30k people. 

Atsali establishes a new country with these survivors and signs a peace treaty with the United Kingdoms of Suideslasia

Rochalitzo is given a small territory upon his return to Amonlogia

Ginshu, Tonoko, and Nedzu relocate to Rochalitzo’s territory, along with presumably Donti

Itia gives birth to a boy. From this we can conclude the above took place within roughly 5 months, since Itia was likely going to tell Orca she was pregnant before the final battle, and Orca is noted to be too weak to leave bed most days after sustaining so many injuries

Unknown post canon events

Suou becomes the first chief of Mud Whale.

After several years, he retired from this position to sail the seas. Lykos takes over as second chief 

Rasha dies 

Shuan joins Suou and Ouni on their sailing trips

Ro proposes to Lykos during her term with encouragement from Urumi and Tobi. This implies mayors are allowed to maintain personal attachments while in office. Lykos gives birth to a daughter.

After Lykos’ term is over, she joins Suou’s ship

Chakuro and Kikujin continue to travel the world continue creating records
