Hello, which moment made you ship bakudeku?
Hmm... you know I don't think I remember one specific moment. It was actually kinda a gradual thing for me.
I started watching MHA years ago when I still suffering pretty badly from a dissociative disorder and depression and shit, so my memory in general is not very good from that time. I remember that I always liked Izuku's character a lot. I think I'm kinda insane because I think I liked Katsuki's character pretty early on too despite how he was kinda a little shit. There's someone I grew up with who I was very competitive with who I also admired/idolized in a similar way to how Izuku admired Katsuki. And I have a lot of similarities to Izuku so I was probably subconsciously projecting onto them from the beginning lol
I also don't really think that I even shipped them romantically at the beginning (or even for a while). I wasn't really like for or against it or anything, I just didn't really think about it at all. And like I said, their dynamic towards the beginning of the show reminded me of one in my own life, but that relationship wasn't romantic in nature at all so yeah I didn't really think about it. I really wanted bakudeku to eventually be friends again from like the first episode though lmao but yeah that was definitely me projecting...
So I guess I always related to Izuku in a lot of ways and I was endeared to Katsuki's character because he reminded me of someone (especially towards the beginning of the story). But honestly the way Katsuki changes and how bakudeku's dynamic changes throughout the story is less similar to that specific relationship/person in my life. So I think the way I viewed them just grew and changed over time as the story progressed. So less projecting and more enjoying the intricacies of their specific dynamic and characters for a wide variety of reasons.
Years and years ago, I used to read a lot of MHA fanfics that were like vigilante Izuku or just Izuku-focused in general when I first started watching the show. I think at some point I just got bored and started reading Bakudeku fics because I liked their characters and I feel like a lot of non-Bakudeku fics don't put their friendship at the center of things. So I was like idc if they kiss at the end I just want to read stuff with both of them in it lmao. Then of course as time went on I was like damn they better kiss at the end. Basically consuming a lot of fan content did help talk me into seeing them in a romantic light ngl
I really just think I always valued their dynamic/characters the most, and I found the two of them the most interesting. I was driven to start actually writing fics of them when the manga ending came out because I was left with some feelings that I wanted to do stuff with (but that is a whole different story lol). Though of course, in going into a character's head in order to write them, you often only grow even more attached...
I will say that one thing I can remember from the first time I watched the show is that when I first watched the episode where Katsuki gets taken by the League and he was like "Don't Come, Deku" before he disappeared into the warp portal thingy, I was like foaming at the mouth because that was like the first time that Katsuki seemed to show anything that wasn't open disdain for Izuku lmao. I sorta just binged watched the show on a whim and genuinely didn't know anything about it at the time except that it was a popular anime. So I was holding onto hope that Izuku and Katsuki would become friends again based off absolutely nothing at all except that I wanted it to happen, so when things actually started happening (them becoming true rivals, interacting a bit more normally) I was very happy :) lol
I probably also lost my mind over Deku vs. Kacchan part 2, but I can't remember. I think just knowing myself I was probably eating that shit up even on the first watch, but yeah my poor memory of that time does me no favors here...
So yeah lol long answer full of personal lore that you did not ask for lmao (but I'm a yapper sorry and you asked me about my years-long hyperfixation so this is simply how it had to be). I like enemies to lovers, I like character foils, I like characters with interesting dynamics and character arcs... so Bakudeku is like crack to me lol.
And while I didn't necessarily ship them romantically towards the beginning, they're so much more obviously gay as hell in the later seasons lmao. Like idk I already shipped them by the time a lot of the actual big moments happened (major moments in Katsuki's development, his apology, them training together more, their moments throughout the war, etc) so it just sort of was a nice little treat for me by then lmao. The manga/anime kept going and I was like ? damn this bakudeku shit is serious ?? Why are they staring into each other's eyes like that for so long just kiss already damn
So... TLDR, I suppose with me and bakudeku it was like a connection at first sight but definitely a slow burn to where I am now haha :) thanks for your question lol hopefully you got your answer somewhere in this longass reply
