Phylum Mollusca is the second largest phylum of invertebrate animals after the Arthropoda.Mollusca is split into 5 classes!Class Gastropoda being what we are interested in currently.This is where we place snails and like you mentioned they split into 3 sub classes:

Prosobranchia

Opisthobrachia

Pulmonata

However you are actually incorrect being split into these three groups do not guarantee the snails habitat as you mentioned. Prosobranch snails while most are marine a few live on land or in fresh water.

BUT it is important to mention The Prosobranchia are now considered polyphyletic (containing more than one evolutionary line).Such a group is considered in error of classification.However the term "prosobranch" can still be used in a descriptive way, meaning "a gastropod with the gill in front of the heart”.And technically is still the term used for the sub class.

....so I just found out that dugong and manatees are different animals...

But…

They look so similar

They are in the same order! The Sirenia they are currently split into two families: Dugongidae and Trichechidae with a total of four species (alive)

So while they look similar they are genetically different and have physical differences too! Like the dugongs tail fluke and they also have a large snout with an upper lip that protrudes over their mouth and have bristles instead of whiskers!
