Ever wonder what happens to the newsies when no one’s looking? Or where newsies who don’t come home to home sweet lodgehouse go? Well, Lil’ Flame- or “Twerp” or “Little Guy” or- y’know, it and its amillion other names has some answers for you!

Lil’ Flame is a young and reckless nomadic newsie who makes a living by making headlines to hopefully get papers to sell. With its endless supply of matches and a spark in its eye, Lil’ Flame is happy to take bribes, blackmail, or anything really to get a fire burning.

“Solly!!” Mooney grinned, selling the paper he had in his hand before trodding over to the other newsboy. He didn’t have a limp anymore, which he’d gotten from the last time Soldier-boy and he were together, messing around with the Delancey’s. He was all healed up.

“Long time no see!! I haven’t seen you in this part of Brooklyn!! What are you doing in the ‘ridge?” Bay Ridge was Mooney’s turf, it was the tip of Brooklyn where the ferry docked to bring people over to Staten Island. Unless they had friends there, most newsies skipped it if they were heading into Brooklyn- Coney Island being a couple stopped after.

Mooney grinned like a dummy, looking up at the other Newsboy as he came over. “Nice to see you too!! I’m glad somebody wants to come check out the Brooklyn Bay Area and see where I sell!”

He tilted his head, looking Soldier-boy over- that same smile plastered on his face. It was still plenty early in the day, so Mooney had not sold a lot of his share of papers just yet. “I heard’ja got some new responsibilities!! A birdie right?! What’th kid’s name? Spot told me when he was last down in lower ‘hattan, he saw you with ‘em.”

Mooney nodded, his ears perked up with interest as Soldier-boy talked. He started to inch away, trying to show Soldier-boy he wanted to talk and walk. He wanted to show the other newsie the canon he was so fond of. “I bet sellin’ witha sweet kid like ‘em helps your sales lots! Have you taken ‘em to Brooklyn or any o’ the other boroughs yet?”

Oh yea, definitely sellin faster. But no I haven’t, most days can be a lot but he had really bad allergies the other day so I couldn’t take ‘im

“Come on! Wanna go see the John Paul Jones Canon? It’s where I hold my Ward Meetings!!” Mooney grinned, starting to lead the way over to the park.

It was a huge, brass thing, with saplings around it. The canon was obviously new. “They put it in 1900, you can clamber down the barrel but I.. I don’t recommend it.”

“YOU!!” Mooney barked out suddenly. A shorter newsie (@the-twerpsie) baring no borough colors stood atop of what Mooney self-proclaimed his. “Spot’s been looking for you-“ Mooney looked towards Solider-boy his brows furrowed but his expression still pleased. “-a friend.. it’s Lil’Flame”

Lil’ Flame, the little goblin, looked up from the canon. Its eyes big and bright like an owls as it stared at the two newsies, slowly blinking at them before offering a wave that seemed more like it opening and closing a fist at them.

Its hands moved fluidly making weird gestures and clicking noises before finally speaking in a voice that mimicked a familiar Brooklyn leader, “Mooney!” @fae-ridgeite

*Soldier looked at the other newsie than at Mooney, not knowing what to do with himself so he waved*

“Lil’Flame!!” Mooney grinned, clambering over the canon balls to stand at the base of the canon’s mouth. He looked back at Soldier-boy, pointing up at the youngest Newsie of the group. “Have you met it yet? This is who Spot’s been payin’ to get better headlines!”

Lil’ Flame nodded proudly, still making weird gestured with its arms and hands, something Soldier-boy would quickly realize was sign language.

It pulled a paper out of their bag, a large headline reading about a set of serial fires that “may be connected to a small local strike happening.”

It stuck out a hand to Soldier-boy, shifting its weight around funnily. @ask-soldier-boy

“Flames also talks in uhh,. The clicky langua..” Mooney petered off, looking confused for a moment as he thought. “Morris code! Navy is teaching me that! Know any of that, Solly?”

Lil Flame made a few clicks and whistles in response, looking towards Mooney before returning its gaze to Soldier-boy.

It blinked a couple of times at Soldier-boy, always moving and swaying as it listened to them attentively, shifting its weight, blinking weirdly, and fidgeting with its bag.

Lil’ Flame was wandering Brooklyn with a funny little grin on its face, clambering up boxes and making weird hand motions at newsies.

Spotting Northstar, Lil’ Flame let out a little croak, its voice mimicking Spot Conlon’s very closely but almost sounding disconnected in a way, “Hey! Kid!”

[<>] Northstar was surprised at the voice behind him, and turned to find Lil’ Flame. [<>]

“Ey! What’s the word?” [<>] He smiled, though hardly knowing them. He wondered what the fellow newsie had to say, or if they were just being friendly. [<>]

Lil’ Flame clapped, something it seemed to do when newsies responded friendly. It thought for a moment before speaking again, a string of words, each sounding as if spoken by different people.

“Where’s.. Spot! Conlon? Here? I.. worked!”

The newsie wasn’t necessarily known for what it did, their infamy depending on the borough and how open each leader was to sharing their secret to their success each day.

“No idea, kid. Probably at Sheepshead this time a’ day, but that’s just my guess.”

[<>] Spot Conlon? Why was this little kid trying to find Spot? He’d seen a few headlines, blurry photographs of a kid setting things on fire… no, it can’t be the same kid. New York’s full of kids. Right? [<>]

Lil’ Flame deadpanned, looking around without moving its head, as if everything went off script and it had no idea what to do now.

“Guess.”

It was a crappy impression of him, a horrible impression really, but it seemed to be figuring out his enunciation. It hopped down onto the dock, not really knowing what to do, so it swayed lightly before pulling out a paper.

“Guess… what? And hey, what’s the headline today?”

[<>] Northstar craned to look at the paper Lil’ Flame held, a bit confused still [<>]

It pointed out the headline, something about some poor old dock being set aflame and spreading to a nearby perfume carriage.

“Spot.. pay! Me!”

The newsie spoke proudly, pointing at the headline, nodding agreeably.

“I. Worked!”

[<>] There, it all connected. This kid had beat the system and bent it to his will, even getting money on the side. Northstar almost wished that was him. [<>] “That you? Geez, kid, you’re smarter than any guy I know. And Spot’s gonna pay ya?”

Lil’ Flame nodded, tapping on the paper with a proud look in its eyes, rolling it up and placing it back in its bag.

“JOB.”

“You.. are, Brooklyn??? Yes??”

[<>] He crossed his arms, trying to gauge what it was thinking right now. He hoped he was leaving a good impression on the kid, seeing as Spot Conlon was on its side now. [<>]

“Suree, suree..” Lil’ Flame nodded, “Ise ain’t never sees youse before” Both phrases in a voice sounding oddly like a Brooklynite he’s probably met in passing,

“Lil’ Flame!” It spoke again, pointing at itself.

Lil’ Flame was wandering Brooklyn with a funny little grin on its face, clambering up boxes and making weird hand motions at newsies.

Spotting Northstar, Lil’ Flame let out a little croak, its voice mimicking Spot Conlon’s very closely but almost sounding disconnected in a way, “Hey! Kid!”

Lil’ Flame clapped, something it seemed to do when newsies responded friendly. It thought for a moment before speaking again, a string of words, each sounding as if spoken by different people.

“Where’s.. Spot! Conlon? Here? I.. worked!”

The newsie wasn’t necessarily known for what it did, their infamy depending on the borough and how open each leader was to sharing their secret to their success each day.

“Guess.”

It was a crappy impression of him, a horrible impression really, but it seemed to be figuring out his enunciation. It hopped down onto the dock, not really knowing what to do, so it swayed lightly before pulling out a paper.

The newsie spoke proudly, pointing at the headline, nodding agreeably.

“My favorite lil’ bother!!” Mooney grinned, scrunched up from the heat of the day. It was unusually pretty out, however the heat had also come down within the evening with a humidity that promised rain during the night.

“How sellin’ treatin’ you, pally?”

Lil’ Flame head snapped in Mooney’s direction, clapping like one of those toy monkey with cymbals. It began making unusual gestures with its hands, it looking much like babble or nonsense as it rambled.

It paused to pull out a paper, one from the Journal, yet another trophy from today’s good work. The young newsie bared its teeth, more like an animal trying to smile or a baby who hadn’t done so before.

Mooney chortled, staring at the other newsie like it was a zoo exhibit. He loved this kid, he really did.

“Can I read the headline?.. did you do that?” He huffed out a laugh, looking slightly nervous. He loved Lil’Flame, but a lot of the time the older Brooklynite worried about the younger. He was afraid of it biting off more than it could chew and handle.

“I win!” It mimicked in Spot’s voice, stomping its feet to expel its extra energy.
