Howdy! This is going to be a OOC post. Mooney is my Newsie OC. I based him off the stories my father told me of his time growing up in Brooklyn in the late 70's. My other blog is @64-jungle-planks, I'd love it if you'd check me out there and follow!

Mooney is a trustworthy yet childish Newsie who loves baseball. He's 17, bisexual, and has a big crush on Spot Conlon- which he confuses for envy. He’s also a leader of his own subborough/ward in Brooklyn, Bay Ridge! You can interact with other OC's and I'm totally fine with shipping with other Newsies or OC's, just please ask first!

“Solly!!” Mooney grinned, selling the paper he had in his hand before trodding over to the other newsboy. He didn’t have a limp anymore, which he’d gotten from the last time Soldier-boy and he were together, messing around with the Delancey’s. He was all healed up.

“Long time no see!! I haven’t seen you in this part of Brooklyn!! What are you doing in the ‘ridge?” Bay Ridge was Mooney’s turf, it was the tip of Brooklyn where the ferry docked to bring people over to Staten Island. Unless they had friends there, most newsies skipped it if they were heading into Brooklyn- Coney Island being a couple stopped after.

*Soldier smiled and walked over to where Mooney was*

Mooney grinned like a dummy, looking up at the other Newsboy as he came over. “Nice to see you too!! I’m glad somebody wants to come check out the Brooklyn Bay Area and see where I sell!”

He tilted his head, looking Soldier-boy over- that same smile plastered on his face. It was still plenty early in the day, so Mooney had not sold a lot of his share of papers just yet. “I heard’ja got some new responsibilities!! A birdie right?! What’th kid’s name? Spot told me when he was last down in lower ‘hattan, he saw you with ‘em.”

Oh yea, dats Glass. He’s a real sweet kid, kinda shy but slowly opening up, I’ll have ta bring ‘im ta meetcha. He’ll definitely like ya

Mooney nodded, his ears perked up with interest as Soldier-boy talked. He started to inch away, trying to show Soldier-boy he wanted to talk and walk. He wanted to show the other newsie the canon he was so fond of. “I bet sellin’ witha sweet kid like ‘em helps your sales lots! Have you taken ‘em to Brooklyn or any o’ the other boroughs yet?”

Oh yea, definitely sellin faster. But no I haven’t, most days can be a lot but he had really bad allergies the other day so I couldn’t take ‘im

Mooney hummed, nodding. “Sucks about his allergies. I hate em, butja gotta work through them sometimes, you know?” He shrugged, starting to full on walk instead of shuffle.

“Come on! Wanna go see the John Paul Jones Canon? It’s where I hold my Ward Meetings!!” Mooney grinned, starting to lead the way over to the park.

“It sure is. You’re in Jackie’s boys, right? Does he host meetings? Pep talks?” Mooney’s walk was brisk and fast, but he kept pausing to make sure Soldier-boy could keep up with him.

“Solly you’ll like the canon! It was put here as a monument to the navy base here in Brooklyn, Fort Hamilton!” Mooney explained as they came into view of the canon. It was a huge, brass thing, with saplings around it. The canon was obviously new. “They put it in 1900, you can clamber down the barrel but I.. I don’t recommend it.”

“YOU!!” Mooney barked out suddenly. A shorter newsie (@the-twerpsie) baring no borough colors stood atop of what Mooney self-proclaimed his. “Spot’s been looking for you-“ Mooney looked towards Solider-boy his brows furrowed but his expression still pleased. “-a friend.. it’s Lil’Flame”

*Soldier froze when someone called out*

Lil’ Flame, the little goblin, looked up from the canon. Its eyes big and bright like an owls as it stared at the two newsies, slowly blinking at them before offering a wave that seemed more like it opening and closing a fist at them.

Its hands moved fluidly making weird gestures and clicking noises before finally speaking in a voice that mimicked a familiar Brooklyn leader, “Mooney!” @fae-ridgeite

*Soldier looked at the other newsie than at Mooney, not knowing what to do with himself so he waved*

“Lil’Flame!!” Mooney grinned, clambering over the canon balls to stand at the base of the canon’s mouth. He looked back at Soldier-boy, pointing up at the youngest Newsie of the group. “Have you met it yet? This is who Spot’s been payin’ to get better headlines!”

Lil’ Flame nodded proudly, still making weird gestured with its arms and hands, something Soldier-boy would quickly realize was sign language.

It pulled a paper out of their bag, a large headline reading about a set of serial fires that “may be connected to a small local strike happening.”

It stuck out a hand to Soldier-boy, shifting its weight around funnily. @ask-soldier-boy

Lil Flame made a few clicks and whistles in response, looking towards Mooney before returning its gaze to Soldier-boy.

It blinked a couple of times at Soldier-boy, always moving and swaying as it listened to them attentively, shifting its weight, blinking weirdly, and fidgeting with its bag.

To be honest I was so excited for today you have NO IDEA!!! For Day 3, the original prompt was Fireplace, but instead I wanted to do UKsies!!

I feel like their names would change only slightly- Gabrielle “Lucky Spot” Salvadora Conlon and Maeve “Moonstone” Deibel-Fuery.

I love them I love them so much oh my god. I really love their UKsies versions :]!! I love the blue and how they work with the yellow in their designs.

My babies!!!! So this is my day 1: First encounter! Spot and Mooney, known by that time as Gabby and Eoin, first meet during a Ward Call (when all the neighborhoods of Brooklyn meet up) during winter. It’s freezing and Gabby (Spot) doesn’t know what the hell to make out of Eoin- a strange creature with the dopiest ear defect Gabby had ever seen.. the strangest, and the thing that flusters him the most, is that the stranger actually uses Spot… Gabe’s chosen nickname…

Oh!! It’s around 1892- which would make Spot 12 and Mooney 11! I’m experimenting with a new style, which I really like.

I really like how Spot looks with the coloring and the style- so I think I might do the whole month in it and try to see if I can guide my normal style more that way!! I had a lot of fun drawing this- I have been nervous about Spooney (Spot and Mooney) just because they are so close to my heart and I love them so much.

‧₊˚ ⏾. ⋅ A Slender, tall Newsie stumbled off of the evening trolly, his face contorted into an incredibly confused expression. Thissss wasn't Bay Ridge.. and it certifiably wasn't Brooklyn. He really shouldn't have fallen asleep on the ride back from Manhattan.

The Freckle faced boy stumbled off of the platform, looking around for another Newsie or two, hoping for a familiar face. "E, you’vs gotta pull y'rself together n' figure out where the hell yous is.." He mumbled to himself, his strangely pointed ears pricked up for signs of danger.

Andrew had been passing out his newspapers along the way. Greeting every person with a smile and a tip of his hat. It was fake anyway. He'd bumped into someone on his way, turning to give them a dirty look, per his usual self. Instead he saw a newsie, his scrunched up face softened.

"You lost or somethin? Stop wand'rin round with a fused look on ya face. Sell ya papes"

Two-bits replied, nudging the boy's shoulder, then swiftly adjusting his own crossbody bag

He looked fondly at the other Newsie for a moment more, before his selling mask was put on. He looked around the Rapid Transit Company's outside station for a moment, trying to take in the street names for some familiarity before speaking again. "Salut! I am, couldja tell em where the 'll I'v been dropped?"

The red clad Newsie paused for a moment, staring blankly at the other, a mix of he selling face and relief once again slowly creeping onto his face. His ears were still pricked up in alert. "'M Mooney, by the way.. o' Brooklyn Ward fith-five."

“Nice to meet ya, Two-bits, an’ I guess nice to meet de Bronx!” Mooney grinned, offering up a hand and spitting into it. “I normally don’t sell outta Brooklyn. I don’t like takin’ sales outta othar Newsie’s mouths.”

He was very much capable of the almost always angry look that all Brooklynites sported, however normally didn’t sport it. “What makes’cha think I look like’a Queensie or a Manhattanite, huh?”

Mooney wrinkled his nose at the mere mention of the the fifth borough. It was obvious that Mooney thought that the island across the Verrazzano-Narrows didn't belong with the other four boroughs. If you outright asked him, he'd also admit that he thought Brooklyn should have stayed its own city. "We's 55, which takes up th' Fort Hamilton and Bay Ridge neighboorhods. Could also b' cause I wasn't born dere with the resta de boys."

Mooney fell into a comfortable silence, his ears still pricked and moving around to listen to all that was around them in- what was to him- a strange, new world.

His gaze, however, shifted over to Two-bits, taking the other Newsboy in- his red hair and shimmery green eyes, the mole on his lip, and the stray hairs that had started to grow on his chin. His outfit was incredibly blue, Mooney thought, thought that’s probably how Bronxites dressed.

He somewhat trusted them- however, Spot always had an inkling of distrust of everyone and especially of people outside his borough. He cared about his boys and himself- he had to protect his own. “‘V course Moon’s been in Brooklyn, he’s one’oh my Ward leaders. We just finished sellin'. How’dja sellin' go for yous three?”

He gestured with his chin as he said, 'Moon', hinting to Hairbrush (green text?) that the person he was with was Mooney. Spot came down to Manhattan for shows at the Bowery and meetings with Jack, however the taller, less muscled newsie beside him rarely showed his face in that particular borough. ⏾ Mooney's ears perked up and listened to the boys. Mooney was always a lot friendlier with others than most Brooklynites, however, he could pack a punch. "You's fellas company is porfect! Don't worry."

‧₊˚ ⏾. ⋅ A Slender, tall Newsie stumbled off of the evening trolly, his face contorted into an incredibly confused expression. Thissss wasn't Bay Ridge.. and it certifiably wasn't Brooklyn. He really shouldn't have fallen asleep on the ride back from Manhattan.

The Freckle faced boy stumbled off of the platform, looking around for another Newsie or two, hoping for a familiar face. "E, you’vs gotta pull y'rself together n' figure out where the hell yous is.." He mumbled to himself, his strangely pointed ears pricked up for signs of danger.

@fae-ridgeite (Hopefully this was an okay opener!! Mooney's never really ventured farther than Ridgewood in Queens, so he's quite a bit lost in the Bronx!!)

Andrew had been passing out his newspapers along the way. Greeting every person with a smile and a tip of his hat. It was fake anyway. He'd bumped into someone on his way, turning to give them a dirty look, per his usual self. Instead he saw a newsie, his scrunched up face softened.

"You lost or somethin? Stop wand'rin round with a fused look on ya face. Sell ya papes"

Two-bits replied, nudging the boy's shoulder, then swiftly adjusting his own crossbody bag

"I don't-" The Freckled Newsie cleared his throat, pausing his explanation that he did NOT sell on others turf's, no matter what, as relief flooding his face. He looked fondly at the other Newsie for a moment more, before his selling mask was put on. He looked around the Rapid Transit Company's outside station for a moment, trying to take in the street names for some familiarity before speaking again. "Salut! I am, couldja tell em where the 'll I'v been dropped?"

The red clad Newsie paused for a moment, staring blankly at the other, a mix of he selling face and relief once again slowly creeping onto his face. His ears were still pricked up in alert. "'M Mooney, by the way.. o' Brooklyn Ward fith-five."

"Well, bonjour, Mooney, you say? You's in the Bronx, Westchester Ave. Best sellin's spot in New Y'ak."

Two-bits replied

"Name's Two-bits. Now why ain't ya passin those papes? Today's a great day to be making ya money, I can shows you me spots"

Mooney snorted at the other newsboy’s ‘bonjour’. “Vous parlez aussi le français?” He mumbled as he looked down at himself and his papes. He had a quarter of a stack left- less than twenty or so papers.

“Nice to meet ya, Two-bits, an’ I guess nice to meet de Bronx!” Mooney grinned, offering up a hand and spitting into it. “I normally don’t sell outta Brooklyn. I don’t like takin’ sales outta othar Newsie’s mouths.”

"Je le fais ! Je ne suis pas encore tout à fait fluent, mais c'était une compétence que mon père m'a enseignée avant de partir."

Two-bits replied, his face lightening up for almost a moment, then his stoicism returned.

"Fair fair. Well den, how'd you end up here? By the way youse look, you is a 'hatten.. or Queens newsie?"

“Ton père?! Mon popa m'a aussi enseigné quand nous vivions là-bas!” Mooney immediately fell by Two-bits side, mirroring his steps. He thumbed the papes in his pack, which had the words ‘The Brooklyn Eagle: Price one cent’ painted on the side.

“I fell asleep on the trolly. My ol’ friend, Bandit, took over one of de trains and tends to wake me if I asleep on his dime.. I passed out on de trolly forgettin’ he wasn’t working today an’ ended up ‘ere.” Mooney explained, furrowing his brow ever so. He was very much capable of the almost always angry look that all Brooklynites sported, however normally didn’t sport it. “What makes’cha think I look like’a Queensie or a Manhattanite, huh?”

Two-bits chuckled

"Hm. Then you outta get back. I'ont ride them trolleys, theys freak me out."

He pondered for a second

"Youse look soft, ain't got that bite to ya. I'se may be wrong, you could be Brooklyn"

Mooney nodded at the mentioned fear of trolleys. He once shared a similar fear, but only when he first came to New York.. now? He was fine around them. "maybe 'cause 'm located close to Richmond." Mooney wrinkled his nose at the mere mention of the the fifth borough. It was obvious that Mooney thought that the island across the Verrazzano-Narrows didn't belong with the other four boroughs. If you outright asked him, he'd also admit that he thought Brooklyn should have stayed its own city. "We's 55, which takes up th' Fort Hamilton and Bay Ridge neighboorhods. Could also b' cause I wasn't born dere with the resta de boys."

"Hm. Man, you pay t'at much attent'in to youse surroundins? Mott Haven is where I linger round, but often I cross into the city..city I guesses, New York City."

He pondered, wanting to add more, really but he wasn't going to tell just a stranger just what he'd been doing on the outskirts of his borough. Even if it was a fellow newsboy. The honest truth, hardly anybody knew how much he traveled.

“I keep my eyes open! If ya stumble into de wrong area in Brooklyn, you might loose somethin’ important.” Mooney gave a shrug like it was no big deal that walking into a wrong alley meant you might be picking a fight that you couldn’t win. Mooney fell into a comfortable silence, his ears still pricked and moving around to listen to all that was around them in- what was to him- a strange, new world.

His gaze, however, shifted over to Two-bits, taking the other Newsboy in- his red hair and shimmery green eyes, the mole on his lip, and the stray hairs that had started to grow on his chin. His outfit was incredibly blue, Mooney thought, thought that’s probably how Bronxites dressed.

"Makes sense. I ain't got time for details. If I'se get lost, I'se find a way. I ain't got no real place ta be. Me brotha is always on the run."

Two-bits responded, he shifted his things again, then cracking his knuckles, neck, and then his back. He pulled off his hat

"I outta get selling, 'less you need me ta direct ya back to youse place"

“… would it be outta yer normal way?” Mooney asked, feeling slightly guilty for staring and taking up Two-bits valuable time. Green eyes met other green eyes, Mooney adjusted to look around the trollyline around them. He didn’t have enough to get back to Brooklyn tonight..

"Hate ta break it to ya, but. I ain't got a way. I'm just all round new york. So I'se can take youse wherever ya needs"

Two-bits replied, attempting at a smile. Grabbing a stack of papers ou of his bag

"You is sure you on't wanna sell somethin while we's here?"

“Oh! Okay!” Mooney said. Things worked differently here, in Brooklyn you had your selling spot. Yeah, sure you could sell other places but that could cause fights and squabbles over ‘taking from other’s mouths’.

“’d be hapy to sell with yous! I have a few Brooklyn Eagles left ta sell off anyways!” He put a hand up, gesturing to Two-bits that he didn’t need any more paper, but was thankful for the gesture. “Whattadaj mean when you said yer brother’s on the run? You hava brother?”
