Hehe, why’d ya call everyone lambs mister? Are you like a Shepherd? You sound like my Sunday school teacher kinda.
I am very capable yep! II’m six and a half! I can tie my own shoelaces and stuff now and I know how to take the bus, but I guess you’re right about the baby part? Papa always calls me his ‘Babydoll’.
I’m sure they’ll come back and visit if they love you! My mama and papa aren’t living together no mores but Papa is still my Papa and he visits all the time! Sometimes I visit him too if mama lets me. It’ll be okay mister!
With another jovial boom of laughter, Bray slaps his open hands on his knees, shaking his head.
Something like a shepherd, pup -- yes, I suppose that's true!
He pauses, and there's a subdued little giggle; he speaks slowly, as if tasting the words, peeling back his lip in a pleased little smile.
Me and all my little lambs. Ho ho.
After a pause, he sits up, brightening, and there's an uncleish sparkle of lofty, conspiratorial, secrecy in his face as he laces his stubby fingers.
But I should say I can teach you things they won't dare teach you in Sunday School, pup.
For just the skin of a second, the toothy grin looks like a row of gravestones, and his hushed, husky, voice is like trapped wind through rotten shutters.
A great many things.
His sunken-beetle eyes glitter.
Why, I could teach you magic.
One hand snaps forward with freakish, snakelike, speed, and in the time it takes to draw in enough breath to cry out, two of Bray's fingers close around something just past the soft shell-curve of Joelle's ear, in a blur of utterly confident movement like the teeth of an alligator snapping shut.
In an instant, the cloud over Bray's expression passes, and there's a broad, beaming, grin on the bearded patriarch's face as he produces a silver dollar between his first two fingers, baby-blue eyes alight with boyish mischief as he draws his hand back far enough for the girl to see.
With a cry of surprise and dismay, Bray flutters one hand to his cheek like a startled maiden, flicking his fingers as the coin dances across the knuckles of his other hand, and subjects the girl to his most theatrical scrutiny.
Good heavens, have you been washin' behind your ears, pup? How long has this been back there?
