Alas there were no more front pages to post... and at some point the actual news itself started to enter a realm that was simply beyond satire.

If anyone is still reading this blog and is in Melbourne this coming Sunday 24 November, I’ll be performing in the Second-Hand Cinema Club Christmas show, with a host of amazing performers! We’re doing a live reading of a blockbuster Hollywood movie from the early 90s, and it’s going to be all kinds of awesome!
“The Herald Sun: We’re for victim-blaming.”
Ok. So if we choose to leave aside the fact that successive LNP state governments (who the Murdocracy unashamedly cheerleads for) have repeatedly neglected and scorned public transport... the fact that regardless of whether the segment in question was seen by commuters it represents the latest in a large catalogue of highly questionable broadcast decisions on a station committed to promulgating racism, sexism, homophobia and anti-science views... the fact that it’s not “censorship” just because people are no longer being forced to watch... then we can only conclude that the only kind of free speech Murdoch and his cronies believe in is the kind where everyone must listen to everything they have to say all of the time and nobody is allowed to decide to switch off.
So if Channel Nine buys out Fairfax, how doomed is this blog?
Moderately doomed, yes.
What I find interesting here, aside from the fact that there isn’t actually a “youth gang crisis” in Victoria, is the photo they’ve chosen to use. Nowhere in the article itself does it mention riot squads- it’s purely to do with association laws being imposed on kids as young as 14. So I have to conclude that the picture of aggressive cops in full riot gear was used to serve some kind of perverse wish-fulfillment for people who enjoy the idea of heavily armed cops beating the crap out of children. Shameful manipulation from The Herald Sun, but certainly not surprising coming from them.
How helpful.

I suppose an elbow to the groin from Iron Man is far from the worst way you could go... Also: someone revoke the Herald Sun’s photoshop license.
Marvel Stadium
As of this September, Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium will become “Marvel Stadium” thanks to an eight-year naming rights deal with Disney. I genuinely think this is cool, but considering the amount of stuff Disney owns, here are some more options:
- Muppet Stadium
- Jedi Arena
- Skywalker Stadium
- Vader Stadium
- Stadium Yoda
- Frozen Stadium
- The Game Grid
- When You Wish Upon A Stadium
- The Jiminy Cricket Ground

Turnbull’s Legacy: Cold-hearted cruelty
Today in parliament Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull stood before the nation and appeared to take credit for the passing into law of legislation that, at long last, brings marriage equality to Australia. I suspect that he would like to think of this moment as his legacy. I suspect he will find that he is mistaken. His legacy will be the weeks and months that came before.
Turnbull’s legacy will be the cold, calculated and very deliberate cruelty of his government.
The Same-Sex Marriage postal survey was a farcical exercise, cooked up by a government that never truly wanted Marriage Equality granted. A party in the thrall of far-right religious and conservative zealots, with a notional leader who lacked the spine to stand up to them. A free vote in parliament is what should have happened. It could have happened, if Turnbull had wanted it to. But it didn’t, and one has to wonder at the choices that were made.. for each one seems specifically designed to cause the most harm to marginalised people.
For eight soul-crushing weeks, LGBTQI Australians were subjected to a non-stop barrage of hate and violence, while voices public and private equivocated over their right to be seen as equal under the law. The postal survey legitimised homophobic sentiment, unleashing a torrent of bile that no-one should ever have been put in the path of. A free vote would have prevented this, something Turnbull & Co must have known.
Running it as a non-binding postal survey facilitated by the ABS (as opposed to the AEC) meant that the usual laws governing the content of advertising material were circumvented. Again, the orchestrators of the survey knew this. Another deliberate choice.
And then there was the financial cost to the Australian taxpayers. For a political party that prides itself on being such great economic managers, they chose the most expensive option available to them. A free vote in parliament would have been... well, free. But no- the government chose to throw $122M at a non-binding, non-compulsory postal survey with no advertising rules, just hoping that people would be so disillusioned with the process that they would fail to turn up and so thwart the cause of marriage equality yet again.
In spite of all this, not only did the Australian voting public come to the party and return a majority Yes vote in the postal survey, but our elected officials in the Senate and the House of Representatives held enough numbers supporting equality that the Bill was passed without a single conservative amendment being made (proving what could have been achieved some time ago if only Turnbull hadn’t had his spine removed, but that’s as may be). And now Turnbull has the temerity to try and claim this as a personal victory?
No, Malcolm. Love and equality will not be your legacy. Your legacy will be the needless and cruel process you made everyone go through just so that all Australians could have equal rights. This cruelty will not be forgotten.
Ok Herald Sun. You can stop calling yourself a newspaper now. If the best you can muster about the disgraceful humanitarian crisis on Manus is a tiny fluffy bit about Russell Crowe on page four and a Mark Knight cartoon on page fifty fucking five, you're not serving the people's interest as an outlet for news. You're a propaganda tool for the racist right-wing government and the world according to Rupert Murdoch. Hang your head in shame and hand in your badge, Herald Sun. You're done.
You're just the very epitome of graciousness and respect, aren't you Rupert?
