The Harlem Renaissance was important to African-American culture because it allowed many people, like Zora Neale Hurston, to immerse themselves into their arts and express themselves in a way they could not in the south due to segregation. Zora Neale Hurston moved to New York to study anthropology. She quickly became a very influential figure for writers during the Harlem Renaissance, creating some of her most famous work during that time. and even being called by some the “Queen of the Harlem Renaissance”.

Mules and Men was a book written by Zora Neale Hurston in 1935, which was her first anthropological work. It was the collection of research Zora Neale Hurston gathered during her ethnography of African-American folklore in the south. The location of her research was in her hometown of Eatonville, Florida, known to be one of the first towns in the United States to be incorporated and fully governed by African-Americans.

Zora Neale Hurston was a significant writer, folklorist, and anthropologist. She was born on January 7, 1891 in Notasulga, Alabama and raised in Eatonville, Florida, which was one of the locations of her ethnographic research. She attended Howard University and then Barnard College, where she studied anthropology under famous anthropologist Frank Boas. She was a pioneer in the field of anthropology because of her focus on the African American experience and racial struggles. Some of her most popular work was her ethnography of African-American folklore in the South.
