Why I now #WorkWithPride
I've been working with pride for about 2 years now. At my first two graduate jobs, I didn't mention it to anyone as I wasn't sure how people would react.
Most people just assumed that I was straight, so I tried to avoid conversations that would make them think otherwise.
I ended up feeling like I was living two lives. My friends and family knew, but my colleagues didn't.
For some reason I worried about what they would think, when even my 74 year old Nan, from a completely different generation didn't have a problem as long as I was happy.
Now, if it comes up, I openly speak about the fact that I'm bisexual at work, and I feel much better that I'm not having to hide away from certain conversations.
Nobody cares anyway, it really wasn't as big of a deal as I thought it was.
I want to help more people to feel comfortable enough to come out at work, so I’ve been working on a project to get companies to commit to more support for LGBT communities. Please share the site at: www.pridepencils.com
And remember, always #WorkWithPride
Coming out at work can be tricky, but it shouldn’t be.
I made this project after finding out that 62% of LGBT graduates go back into the closet when they enter the workplace. I was part of this statistic, and it felt incredibly awkward to come out to people who I didn’t know, who I thought may judge me.
Please join this thunderclap http://thndr.me/9857VG to help more LGBT people to #WorkWithPride. Together we can create a better environment for us all. Thank You :)
