Here are some potential relationship ideas I would be interested in exploring with Strahd; if you are interested in pursuing one of these paths, please let me know (I will be adding more if more opportunities present themselves over time):

Occult Acquaintance – Strahd has always had a keen interest in dark arts and black magic, even in life. Not only does he surround himself with tomes and scrolls dripping with ancient and forbidden knowledge, but he also covets the company of those immersed in such learning. These are friendly relationships, though often driven by ambition and lust for power.

Blood Donor (Blood tw) – The Devil is, above all things, a vampire. Beyond all of the magic, intrigue, and grandstanding, is an eternal thirst for blood. Strahd is very particular about the sources he draws blood from, preferring either the most beautiful people available, or those who are ambitious, wise, or intriguing. Strahd often prefers to play the part of a kindly or gentle role in these relationships, hiding his predatory nature behind a mask of seductive charm.

Villainous Colleague – A being of evil, immersed in sin and cruelty for many centuries, Strahd von Zarovich is no stranger to the wicked. Indeed, he prefers the company of the corrupted and cruel, feeding off of their negativity and adding it to his own. Those who maintain a villainous outlook, Strahd often finds to be interesting, though this is often a clinical relationship in which the vampire attempts to find out just how far a person’s evil nature can be pushed.

Heroic Distraction –

Heroes are fools, proud and forthcoming – Strahd finds little greater pleasure than bringing such people to the edge and making them face their own weakness. Strahd often spins his relationships with heroes to last quite a long time, even going as far as assisting them in their heroic deeds, if only to make the fall at the end ever the sweeter.

Bride Material (Abuse tw) – Strahd’s obsession stems from his long-lost love for Tatyana, his brother’s bride. By now, the vampire has lost all connection with any true romantic feelings he experienced, but he compulsively is driven to replicate it by seeking out vulnerable, beautiful people and feeding on their insecurity and fragility, coaxing them to become his “brides” and forcing them to exist by his side in a mockery of love and affection. These relationships always end in tragedy, for beauty is fleeting, and Strahd quickly gets bored of people – more often than not, they wind up discarded, forgotten at best and shut in stone tombs to rot for eternity at worst.

Fate. It was a funny thing, and one that Strahd had much experience with. He remembered Katerina, the young woman who served at the castle when he was growing up, her mischievous eyes and the way they flickered when she’d taunt him, asking if he wanted to know his future. She could read the cards, and those she had read for always found that they bore the truth; it was as though, through the cards, she was able to draw out the threads of fate itself and spin it upon a loom.

He had always rejected her offers. He had been afraid before. Now, it did not matter to him.

   “Regardless of how we see the world, of how powerful we feel, we cannot rewrite what has happened, and we cannot stop what is coming. Whether it is written is irrelevant, for we are as frail vermin in the face of it. Strahd looked up at Crow questioningly, all the while continuing to stroke the hair of the individual who had fallen asleep on his lap. It wasn’t by any of his magics nor his vampiric charm, of course; after all, he had no access to his abilities. No, this was merely a tired person, and Strahd had offered his (slightly sinister) hospitality to the stranger. An act of kindness…and perhaps hunger.

Quietly, he looked down at their face. Pretty. Pretty, but uninteresting. This was a face which knew little of strife, of ambition, of sin. The face of a thoroughly mediocre person, one who would live an unimportant life and die in obscurity.

The Devil was hungry, but he was not so hungry as to stoop that low. Gently, he brushed his hand over their cheek, not forcefully enough to wake them, but just enough to feel soft skin under his own dead flesh.

   “…No, I do not believe so. If you find yourself famished, I will be happy to pass this burden on to you, my friend.”

Saying that, Strahd visibly recovered from his wincing. This city…it was loud, and bright, and warm, even at night, even now. There was something uncanny about it, something that made the vampire visibly discomforted in the environment. Looking over the other figure, the Devil attempted to gather himself, adjusting his collar and raising an eyebrow.

   “…You do not appear to be fully incorporated into the ‘culture’ yourself, my friend…how do you fare? Have you gotten used to it? The noise, the life, the…light? You do not find it distasteful?”

“I do not  feel at all qualified to discuss the philosophical implications of that.”

   “Hah! Saying that, you may well be more qualified than most…a most curious catch, that.”

Strahd’s laugh was more akin to a bark; sharp, curt, a mere spark of humor which may well have been more fabricated than true. Nonetheless, a keen smile was drawn across his lips, and he shut the book he had been poring over, setting it aside for the time being. It did not seem that Lanque was altogether interested in the monotonous subjects the vampire had come to love (or, at least, be willing to spend time on) over the centuries. Understandable. He did not yet know what it meant to need to lose oneself, or else lose one’s mind.

   “…You are not keen on philosophy, nor ethics, I presume, my friend? Is there any area of study which does draw your attention? I have had much time to research, many means and resources…I am certain that with my cataloging expertise, we can find something to titillate those little grey cells of yours.”

Strahd was not inclined to disagree with the being – he was as yet wary of the power they had shown, the power he’d felt as familiar, yet alien to those things which had crawled in his nightmares all those centuries ago. Nonetheless, it does not take even a moment for him to make the rebuff, in a tone almost disinterested, detached. 

As though he did not simply wager a guess. As though he knows the truth.

   “…Not everything dies. There are some things which will persist…forever. I may not be a god, nor even a power approaching such status…but that, I know all too well.”

“They say eye contact is important, but maybe not this much.”

   “And how much, would you say, would be just enough?”

Eye contact was important, but to the vampire, it almost carried its own meaning. To look into Strahd’s eyes was to see a reflection of an endless hell, black and cold, but it was also to be taken – many believed that the Devil could capture souls by looking people in the eyes. In truth, it was merely the cursed charming magic that vampires developed, naturally or no, to lure mortals to their doom.

Of course, Strahd no longer had any such magic. Nonetheless, much like him, habits die hard, and he cannot help but watch the singer as she performed, trying to catch her gaze and hold it. She was beautiful; her voice, captivating. He no longer had a heart, but he still felt as though he may have, in life, been moved by her music.

   “…Hm. Forgive me. Your performance was…well, I have not heard the like in many a year.”

There was a smile in Strahd’s voice, even in his eyes, and there was nothing kind about it. By now, Lanque must have come to expect it; the Devil did not deal in kindness, and had not for many centuries. In blood, however, the vampire had much experience – he knew how to collect it, how to savor it, how to move it. Blood was life, and life was blood; the master of fair Barovia understood what it meant to lord over life, even though he had forsaken it long ago.
