When filming the argument scenes in 2010ās Blue Valentine, writer/director Derek Cianfrance gave instructions to Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling individually without the knowledge of the other in order to create more tension between Dean and Cindy. For Williams, Cianfrance would instruct her to try to leave the room, use any way to break out of the argument with Gosling etc. For Gosling, Cianfrance would tell him to use any means to persuade, get Williamsā attention, etc. Gosling has stated it was a new and interesting process as it became a tug game on set.

āAnother part of why I think this green dress resonates so much is that itās a real collaboration. The thing is, to make a dress that bold everyone has to be committed to it. Seamus [McGarvey], the DP, has to be committed to shooting that dress in an iconic way. It has to fit Keira in an iconic way. Joe has to want it to have a function like that. The real secret of the green dress is its function in the movie. If it hadnāt had that function, it couldāve been a dress that comes and goes, really. But because it has such a pivotal moment ā or sheās wearing it at such a pivotal moment ā and Seamus and Joe have shot it in a way, and Keira looks so good in it, I think itās just this perfect storm of things all going right at the same time. Thereās a shot of her standing, smoking outside ā this side shot ā and the dress is quite well laid out. Itās a great shot; it has a real ā30s glamour but itās also a bit more modern. It just captures what we were trying to do in the movie. You can make a really brilliant dress but, and Iāve seen this in other films, the actorās only shot from the waist up. Unless you frame it in a way thatās really going to sell it to its best advantage, itās never going to have the impact it could have.
