one of my lecturers printed us a step-by-step guide to writing an essay for an assignment we had. i decided to type it up and share it with you guys. i think for the most part it is really useful and a super simple way to break down your essay. hope this helps :~)
Morse Code A Visual Guide
sammiwolfe important to our lives lol XD
Oh oh my god now Morse code actually makes SENSE when you lay it out like that
Awesome!!
This is also nice, if you want to decode morse code quickly.Â
that avl tree though
Thatâs not a coincidence! Naturally, itâs less work to transmit shorter sequences of dots and dashes, so we try to use up all the shorter sequences first. Basically, this means that we fill in all the branches at one level of this tree before moving onto the next. The result is a perfectly balanced decoding tree.Â
The placement of the letters is also far from arbitrary. Here are all the letters in English ordered from most common to least common:Â
ETAOINSRHLDCUMFPGWYBVKXJQZ
Notice something? The shortest morse code sequences were assigned to the most common letters. This makes the common letters easier to remember, and makes messages as short as possible in the average case.
Numbers are sort of an exception to this. All numerical symbols are encoded with 5 dots and dashes. But thereâs a pretty clear pattern to these as well.Â
1 = .â-
2 = ..â
3 = âŚâ
4 = âŚ.-
5 = âŚ..
6 = -âŚ.
7 = ââŚ
8 = â..
9 = â-.
0 = ââ
So if the listener hears a series of 5 dots and dashes, they immediately know itâs a number. To decode it, they count the number of dashes. If the dashes came before the dots, the number is 5 + the number of dashes. Otherwise, the number is 5 - the number of dashes.Â
Morse Code is neat.
Whenever Iâm going on a trip, I always create a âBefore You Goâ spread to make sure I donât forget anything. Â
how i make my notes look niceÂ
0. Why Bother?
This sounds superficial, but I love pretty things. I also love to doodle, but this is a productive way to do it. It helps your notes seem more organized and manageable, and because theyâre so pretty youâll want to study from them instead of shoving them into the deep dark recesses of your bag.
1. Borders and Dividers
You know how pictures always look better in a frame? The same goes for notes.Â
These donât need to be anything fancy, they can be boxes or squiggly lines. Here are some ideas, ft. my slanting columns and messy scanning :)
2. Nice Headers
I usually have 2 classes of headers - one for the title of the notes and one for subheadings in the notes.Â
My heading system is fairly consistent - I only have two types of main headers and a few subheaders. Hereâs how mine look, ft. another bad scan
Here are some more ideas!
3. Tables, Diagrams, Graphic Organizers
Instead of writing information in big blocks of text, you can organize it in a different way.
4. Doodle!
Drawings related to the topic can improve visual interest and memory. You can also draw random things that are somewhat related to the topic, just to spice up the notes. For example, in Biology I drew plants when learning about the chemical processes of photosynthesis.
5. Get Inspired
You can browse the studyblr and studyspo tags on tumblr, my pretty notes tag, or some pictures of how I structure my notes.
Some people with beautiful inspiring notes:
@studyguideverified @studykouffee @studypetals @studyreliefâ and many other blogs, tag your faves in the reblogs please!
Normally I just skim over the photos, but when looking for inspiration you should look closely and incorporate elements you like into your own notes. While youâre at it, you may as well read the information because learning!
IMPORTANT
Pretty notes are very popular in the studyblr community, but donât feel forced to make them. If it doesnât help you, donât waste your time. I donât recommend rewriting your notes just to decorate, make sure youâre also clarifying/condensing/adding to/etc the information.

SO CUTE BB
so as an aspiring classicist (slash medievalist) i like roman history A Lot, and i read about it A Lot, and over time iâve come up with A Lot of reliable resources for studying it.Â
online:
ancient history encyclopedia
fordham ancient history sourcebook (rome)
fordham ancient history sourcebook (byzantium)
de imperatoribus romanis
illustrated history of the roman empire
ancient sources:
the history of rome (livy)Â - covers from romeâs (obscure, semimythological) early history all the way up to the reign of augustus. long, dull, but relatively worth it.
lives of the twelve caesars (suetonius)Â - deals with the lives of julius caesar through to emperor domitian. fair warning: people donât call suetonius an ancient gossip columnist for nothing, so take him with a grain of salt.
annals (tacitus)Â - reign of tiberius to reign of nero, everyone loves this one.
de bello gallico (julius caesar)Â - caesarâs own record of his campaign in gaul, aka roman war propaganda. short but important part of roman history.
books:
iâve read most of these and been recommended the rest, but they reflect my own interest in specific subjects. you can find a more comprehensive list here.
rubicon (tom holland)
a history of rome (m. cary and h.h. scullard)
the roman republic (michael crawford)
whoâs who in the roman world (john hazel)
spqr (mary beard)
the classical world (robin lane fox)
cicero (anthony everitt)
audio:
the history of rome (mike duncan)
the history of byzantium

august 21st | chemistry revision for my test this Wednesday is going pretty smoothly!
Spread for first week of July!
While it was a very short week for me, it felt very long at the same time. My bf and I also started watching Game of Thrones, which might or might not have influenced this weekâs color scheme.
Iâve been loving the Faber-Castell Artist Pitt brush pens so much! Also, I just found out that Target sells $1 washi tapes! The stationery addiction is strong. đŞđź

19 / 100 days of productivity | 14.08.16Â
I spent the day making Topic 4 notes for Business! Only one topic to go before Iâve finished summarising the whole syllabus!!
University Tips (non-conventional)
If these help anyone, great!
Wear sports bras/bralettes to lectures instead of the ones with a buckle at the back. They tend to poke and prod your back after a while if youâre leaning back. Sports bras donât.
Set your timetable as your phone background for the first few weeks. Use this method for no. 6 too if you can be bothered.Â
Lay a towel on your bed a few days before your period is due. If you leak on a towel you can just wash it or throw it away. Easier than washing and changing the sheets.
When youâre in a lecture taking notes on a laptop remember to turn down the brightness on your screen, especially if the lecturer has dimmed the lights. Otherwise youâll annoy others and drain your battery.Â
Save your recordings at every given break instead of making one continuous one through pausing. Sometimes files are too large to save and you donât want to risk losing the entire lecture recording. Save as you go along.
If you need to remember something (e.g. a library book, USB, locker key..) write it on a post-it note and stick it on your shoes before you sleep. Make sure theyâre the shoes you intend to wear the next day!
Donât shoot me: if you have left an assignment really late, stay up as long as you can completing it (yes, that means an all-nighter may be needed). Sleep as soon as youâve handed it in.Â
If you use tech in a lecture e.g. phone for recording or electronic notetaking on your laptop, then mess around with it before uni begins. Know what buttons to press and when, otherwise youâll mess up your notes and annoy others, with your excessive clicking.Â
Always, always, ALWAYS carry a plastic bag/carrier bag. You might need to make a trip to the library, drink may spill in your bag so youâll need an alternative or you may not be able to dispose of a pad/tampon until you get back home. Seriously, just carry one. Â
Find out where coursework/assignment are submitted within your first week on campus. Ask admin how the procedure works and make sure you know it inside out.Â
Iâll update this list as things come to me. I hope it helps, this is all my opinion, sorry.Â
