Portia Brooks from Something Rotten! Requested by: None Written by: Laika
Ravenclaw Intelligence âłÂ âI love poetry and the way that poets uses theoretical language to express the beauty of life.â Portia has the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills. We first see this when weâre first introduced to Portia in the musical after she bumped into Nigel. She gets hold of his poem and starts to go into a tangent on poems until Brother Jeremiah butted in and asked her to come away from Nigel. Portia also loves to read, which keeps her mind occupied and gets her to learn new things.
Wit âłÂ âI accidentally took this on our first encounter. Your sonnet. Itâs prefection.â There is no doubt that Portiaâs sharpness and her intellegence comes from her love of poetry. Even though her father banded her from reading poetry, she still finds a way to read them without anyone finding out. During the I Love The Way number, Portia tells Nigel how much she enjoys poetry and reads them everytime even writing some herself.
Wisdom âłÂ âBut then they'll hear the words of truth that you've written from your heart.â During We See The Light, Portia gives Nigel some tough love and tells him that just go out there and say what he wants to say in a dream sequence. Historically, Renaissance women wouldnât be considered as wise people at that time. They were more loyal than wise but women in Shakespeareâs plays are not. Portia is one of those women. And her wisedom comes from within.
Creativity âł âAnd often I borrow their words to express how I feel.â Portiaâs creative sense comes from within and from the privacy of her own room. She, as the quote says, uses other poets words for self expression. Even though her abilities is left unsaid in the musical, Portia could have and would have written about a dozen of poetries in her room. Some would be mostly about relationship with Brother Jeremiah, Nigel Bottom, and possibly, William Shakespeare.
Originality âłÂ âAnd then Iâm like well, when the phrases come together like a consummation.â Portiaâs use of words makes her original and unique. She doesnât let anyone change the way how she thinks about her. That would probably make her a Slytherin at heart, but. Portiaâs sense of originality is not ambition. It is creativity. Before the We See The Light number, she says to Nigel that she had to climb out the window in order to meet up with him, which almost everyone did during their adolesence days.
Individuality âłÂ âBut this is what you should be writing.â As an individual, Portia is more of an advisor than a follower. She finds something uniquely done in Nigelâs work and advises him to write a poem just like his Ode To Portia poem because she knows that Nigel was being honest in the poem and was being open about his feelings. That she eventually encourages him to write from his heart and not what his brother tells him to write. Her attitude literally becomes a little pushy but it is all done out of love and respect for Nigel.
Acceptance âłÂ âDoes that makes us star-crossed?â Portiaâs sense of realization is quite unique to her and Nigel. She accepts the fact that Nick is a bit iffy about her and Nigel hanging out together but that doesnât stop both of them from developing a friendship and the fact that theyâre relationship is almost similar to that of Shakespeareâs Romeo & Juliet. However, she also accepts the fact that stories doesnât have to end like it is written.
Thunderbird Favors Adventurers âłÂ  âBut I know youâll win him over, his heart is gonna sing.â Portia internally craves for an adventure outside of the walls of the Purtian Church and the Purtian beliefs. She wants to exprience things that she wants to experience. Her definition of Adventure is the dated verb definition which is engage in hazardous and exciting activity, especially the exploration of unknown territory and Portia literally does that whenever she talks about poetry and how it moves her like a Bible never had. Both emotionally and physically.
Represents the Soul âł Â âIs this your poem? Are you a poet?â Her love for poetry shows that she can be soulful because of her understanding of poetry and how it changed her. During the We See The Light sequence, Portia pours everything that she knows about words and melodically orchestrates a lesson about determination and perserverance to tell Nigel that he can write and do anything that his heart desires in order to win people over, and that it doesnât have to always come from his brotherâs orders.
Patronus Panda âłÂ âI love Sidney and Marlowe and often I borrow their words to express how I feel.â The panda is a resourceful animal and Portia is someone who uses her mind to help Nigel find his inspiration to write a play even if sheâs one of those people that inspires him. She tells him directly that she uses other poets words to express who she feels including those that she admires. Portia is good at that. Sheâs good at using other peopleâs words for her own self-expression. She is also creative. She loves to create something using someone elseâs words how she feels. She is smart as depicted during hers and Nigelâs dream sequence during We See The Light number. Unlike Brother Jeremiah, she is warm and friendly. Sheâs also sympathetic towards people. Also, during the dream sequence, she give Nigel a piece of advice. She is also very spiritual but Portia doesnât let her fatherâs Peagant views change how she feels about poetry. Poetry is her life!
Wand 13 1/2âł Cherry wood with Unicorn hair core, fairly flexible âłÂ âWe see the light. We show them the way.â Portia is one of those characterâs that has something within them that can truly be lethal to the social standings around them. For her, that is words. Words makes Portia a truly lethal person and her love for poetry shows that but she probably knows it and only shares it with Nigel. The Cherry wood would be paired with a Unicorn hair core because Portia does not use her knowledge of words and poetry against anyone. She uses it to help Nigel find his niche. She even adapts to Nigelâs needs. This is what Portia mostly does throughout the course of the musical and is often willing does what Nigel needed in order to find something that Nick would like to put in Omelette.
