Cinderella 1/1/15 ~ Broadway Keke Palmer, Joe Carroll, Judy Kaye, Nene Leakes, Stephanie Gibson, Laura Irion, Todd Buonopane, Phumzile Sojola, Peter Bartlett, Andy Mills, Michael Callahan, Jill Abramovitz Nice video with a few heads at the bottom of the screen during act one but worked around so not in the way; act two has no obstruction; a couple quick dropouts in each act, but no major blackouts. review of 'TL5Y'

With all the 'excitement' about his new Last Five Years movie coming out, I decided to watch the proshot of the stage version from 2006. It started out okay-ish and kinda stayed that way throughout. Though the actors were stunning, music was eh, set was kinda weird and the plot was kinda garbage (The idea of one story from two points of view told in two different directions of time was much better than the delivery.). I was left with one question: "Why was Cathy the one with the unhappy ending (alone, angry and unsuccessful in her acting career) while Jamie ends off successful and with another woman? After all, Jamie does some awful things to their relationship and throughout the marriage (missing Cathy's birthday to go to some party) but he ends up on top." The musical brings up Cathy's shortcomings and faults but doesn't tap into in nearly as much detail why Jamie (who in my opinion is the real problem) does the things he does. That, along with 'dialogue' with Cathy makes it seem that he did those things because she's bitchy, inferring that she's the reason why they broke up. This makes for a really unbalanced musical because Cathy gets the better songs, the funny lines, etc. As a viewer you want to root for Cathy and shoot Jamie, so the ending is really unsatisfying. 

Nevertheless, I was still left with to question why the book was so biased and come to find out, it's based off of the failed relationship between Jason Robert Brown and his ex wife. All of a sudden, it clicked as to why Jamie ended up on top and Cathy ended up a loser. The whole thing is just a thinly veiled, biased, jab at his ex wife. Had she not threatened to sue, he wouldn't have made any changes to make it not a complete mirror of their relationship.
