You’ll promise to be good, won’t you? * Wei Wuxian’s eyes flutter open to a morning that has yet to dawn. It is the dim navy-gray light that greets him, more shadow than color—a glimpse of the world right before it wakes: Lan Wangji has barely risen, still sitting on the corner of their bed and still loosely dressed in that one thin inner robe. He moves in a routine that Wei Wuxian has only rarely witnessed, loathe as he is to wake at such an inhumane hour.
As it always is when concerning Wei Wuxian, there is a care to how Lan Wangji begins his day:
Firstly, it is the untangling of their limbs, careful and gentle as to not disturb the quiet of Wei Wuxian’s rest. Then, there proceeds the reclaiming of a sect ribbon, often laid neatly on their bedside table but occasionally looped possessively around Wei Wuxian’s wrist, like it is this morning. And finally, there is the moment when Lan Wangji turns back, sometimes to swipe tenderly against Wei Wuxian’s cheek; or to press lingering lips against his temple; or often enough, to simply watch him breathe. When he has the opportunity to do so, it is always during this last step that Wei Wuxian announces his wakefulness.
Now, he greets softly, “Hi.” Wei Wuxian reaches out to the other as if he were wading through water, slow and unsteady, still half-waist in a dream.
Easily, Lan Wangji takes Wei Wuxian’s hand, leads him into the loose circle of an embrace and presses lips against cold knuckles, breathes warmth onto them. Lan Wangji murmurs, too, a curious greeting, “Hello. Did I wake you?”
