Ezio: For now. And you? Art, was it?

Leonardo: Truth be told, it’s been difficult for me to settle. Painting is nice, but I often feel like my work lacks… I don’t know… purpose. Does that make sense? I’d rather contribute more practically. More directly, Architecture, perhaps. Or anatomy. I’m not content to merely to capture the world. I want to change it.

Leonardo da Vinci

Italian Renaissance artist and polymath Leonardo da Vinci was born on this day in 1452.

Da Vinci is widely considered one of the greatest painters of all time, and is known to have epitomised the concept of a “Renaissance Man” - one who is knowledgeable, educated, or proficient in a wide range of fields. It is thought that only 15 of his paintings survive, however, together with his notebooks containing drawings, diagrams and thoughts on the nature of painting, da Vinci left behind a significant contribution for future generations of artists.
