This is from a headcanon I have for Hunter based on that scene from the book where he and Phee are walking around Pabu

I think that Hunter floats aimlessly in the water while basking in the weather to unwind. That he lays and feels all of the slight changes in the water’s current and temperature. That he lets the sea breeze dampen the skin above the water and then feels the change of winds on his misted face. That he listens to all the warbled sounds under the water of fish moving and boats crawling. That he smells the salty, fishy air. And that he just lets all of his senses do what they want as he drifts away, only moving if he needs to. I like to think he becomes so still that fish don’t realize he’s alive, and that he can just graze them as he wishes without their notice.

For me the thing with Hunter and suicide in Sanctuary is I think if you were to ask him during that time if he was suicidal, he’d say no and mean it. Because Plan 99 is totally different than suicide. It’s for his family. But I think when you look at how he brings up Plan 99 in the book, it’s very obvious that he’s suicidal and it’s even pretty obvious why.

He’s not worried about failing to get to the Marauder because of some nebulous and harmful outcome, or of being tortured for information or anything like that. He is specifically and explicitly afraid of being captured and used as bait. Like on Daro. Like on Kamino the second time. And what happened on Kamino the second time was so horrific that Hunter cannot let it happen again. Not to his family, and not to himself. And so maybe if what he thought would happen on Daro happens here, Kamino won’t happen again. Not to them, and not to him.

Because it’s not just that he was considering it. It’s that the span of time from “oh shit” to actually having his finger on the grenade’s trigger was like. Two minutes max.

And it’s not just that he had his finger on the trigger. It’s that he didn’t call for help. He didn’t even bother throwing the grenade. When faced with a choice between possible failure and certain death, he decided he’d rather keep the grenade and off himself. I would like you to keep in mind his whole “we didn’t exactly have a choice” thing he does when he doesn’t want to cop to a choice he made and isn’t proud of btw.

He talks about feeling extreme anxiety all the time now, and then he says. Unless something changed, he’d have to decide quickly. And all this is quick. It’s so quick, and it’s not intense or dramatic or anything but routine and matter of fact. And when you look at what he’s not saying, it’s clear. It’s like Phee said. It is about them, but also, it’s about him. All the time, even when he can’t admit it. Because Hunter isn’t suicidal. He’s not in too much pain to go on. That can’t happen yet because the job isn’t over (and every time he thinks it’s over it’s not. Something somehow more horrific happens.) and so this is just Plan 99. Because when Plan 99 is done, he’ll have done everything he can for them. It will be over.

So it’s not suicide. It’s Plan 99, and that’s different.
