Being A scientific Literate Citizen
A student is someone who learns from a mentor, teacher, etc. As a student, being able to learn and understand the vast reaches of science is very important. It's also important that the student understand the importance of the process and research scientists go through. This also applies to the taxpayers and voters, who both invest greatly into science and its research. The people need to understand and grasp important information that is being processed and used as research tools. The improvement of education plays a large role in science because, scientists are people who learn, teach and discover new breakthroughs and ideas. Being aware of new medication or vaccines that are being produced can also aid patients who use these new drugs. With more awareness of the treatments they receive, they can benefit their life and improve the quality of their lifestyle. Students, taxpayers, voters, all members of society, play a influential role within the direction of science.

A new survey commissioned by the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) shows 86 percent of Americans believe developing cures for more forms of cancer should be one of the top national health priorities, followed by developing effective treatments for heart disease (78 percent) and more intensive medical care for seniors (76 percent). These findings are the result of a new annual “From Hope to Cures” survey, which explores Americans’ attitudes on personal health and medical concerns. -

The Importance of Societies influence on Research
When a scientists decides to begin experimentation or research, theses choices are often influenced by the people around them. Scientists can use surveys and see what topic people are more interested in, or what experiment may benefit the community effectively. It's important that society plays a role in scientific research. Society can help provide the scientist with a proper hypothesis, which leads to testing and experimentation. For example, cancer is a major disease that has effected America gravely. Through a survey, scientists and doctors were able to identify what Americans wanted to accomplish the most ; finding a cure for cancer. Even with these different opinions and thoughts people may have on scientific research, it gives the community as chance to expand in their knowledge of the importance of science. This also avoids the waste of resources and tools that are payed for by the government and taxes.
Role of Science and Society ( Societies influence on research )
Scientists and their projects are often influenced by the opinions of their society. Their research is also influenced by the needs of their citizens.
A huge undercover study revealed the truth that is related to false information published in online science journals. It revealed that the false information would at least trouble doctors, policy makers, patients, academia and anybody who relies on the scientific journals. Science contributor, John Bohannon, intentionally sent a fake research article to 305 online journals to observe how common the practice of publishing fake articles is. More than half of the online journals reviewed it and accepted it. According to the fake report that was sent for publishing, a chemical extracted from lichen to kill cancer was discovered. The new drug was only tested on cancer cells, not on healthy cells. Thus, giving no clue related to its effect i. e. whether it was specific to cancer cells or all cells. This fake report was accepted by 157 publications.
