Exhibit: Zuisha vol.18 随写 vol.18

Part eighteen of at least twenty, these photos were shot from late December 2017 to July 2018. It’s the first proper Zuisha show I’ve done since Zen Foto Gallery’s publication of my book (available on shashasha here). Certainly that experience informed the edit of this latest show.

Also, for the first time in this series I’ve included a few photos taken with a date-stampable compact camera. Lens-wise, these Konica Big Mini images technically hold their own against two different Leica Summicrons (breaking almost even with the Aspherical version but surpassing the V4 easily).

Torre di Schiavi depicts an ancient ruin outside Rome that William Trost Richards visited in the fall of 1867. Indeed, his trip abroad that year purportedly inspired him to pursue watercolor: he began working in gouache, a thicker and more malleable form of the medium that facilitates richness of color and opacity. He also used tinted papers in neutral tones of light gray, tan, blue, and green—which had become increasingly popular by midcentury. Here, the blue paper enhances the scene’s luminous color and provides a unified background tone. In the foreground, daubs and hatches of color delineate flowers and individual blades of grass, enlivening the overall composition.
