Add a little more magic and give more meaning to your, and others’, idea of a perfect Valentine. Make love matter today!
When It Pours...
Perhaps the reason why I resent the rain so much is that it makes me remember things I thought I have already forgotten.
The raindrops remind me of the tears I once shed - because of pain, because of love, because of pain from loving too much. The biting wind reminds me of the lack of “warmth” in my life.
I am reminded that to get through the rain, there is no one else I can turn to but myself.
With The Speaks vocalist, Rafael Toledo
One of the more shocking moments that I had during the 10th PAMRA Reunion Tour was meeting one of the guys behind the song “High”, which I used to sing all the time when I was in high school.
I just couldn’t believe my ears when Sir Raffy actually introduced himself as the vocalist of The Speaks before singing in front of the other participants. I was fanboy-ing with the rest of the group as we waved our hands in the air while mouthing the lyrics of the song.
Here I am, after battling the elements just to get to the office. I love cold, breezy mornings -- I like to say that I live for them. But I just can't stand rain. And puddles. And dark rain clouds. I guess I'm just not the singing-and-dancing-in-the-rain kind of person.
So I had to take my silly, blue glove out of its corner in my closet to shield me from the morning's icy bite. The last time I had this on was during my trip in the northern reaches of Luzon, in Banaue. It drew a lot of stares when I boarded the train earlier, must be because it just doesn't match whatever clothes I was wearing.
I'll never get the hang of fashion like I'll never adore the rain. Ever.
No Valentine, No Febru-worries
Here I am, still wide awake, despite the promise I made to myself to never sleep so late at night/so early in the morning ever again. I guess promises are made to be broken. Please don't get offended, I am not generalizing.
It's February again. For me, it's just another month that I have to go through, just another page in a calendar that I would tear up nonchalantly after 28 days have passed. For others, it is the "love month", that time of the year every cookie-cutter couple anticipate, when the demand for roses go up, and the supply of condoms go down. Oops.
A lot of my friends have plans with their special someones, and I am genuinely happy for them. If I have read their Facebook status updates or tweets about dinner and movie dates years ago, I would've felt bad that I would be oh-so-alone come the 14th. But I'm more mature now (really, I just don't look the part). I have learned that there's nothing wrong with being single, there's nothing right about whining about being single, that love is full of mysteries (like the rosary), that love is a many-splendored thing (sang Engelbert Humperdinck, bless his soul).
How would I celebrate Valentine's Day? It is a question I can choose not to answer, but I will anyway just to fill the spaces in this blog entry box. Kidding, kidding! Anyway, this is how I envision my Valentine's Day this year:
Even though I live miles away from the office, I'll report to work early and bail at around 5 in the afternoon. If riding the MRT would prove to be a challenge (I'm sure it would be one heck of a challenge), I would probably arrive at the mall at half past 6. I would rush to the cinemas only to see long lines and the words "SOLD OUT" in red at the monitors above the ticket booth.
I'll turn around, curse (in my head), and try to look for a place to eat. I imagine I'd be so hungry that I'd settle for anything. Lo and behold, I will find that restaurants are chock-full of people who have reserved seats days before. Frustrated, I'll hail the bus bound for home.
I will rejoice that a lot of the seats in the bus have not been taken yet (as my fellow commuters would still be rendezvousing at malls, parks, hotels, etc.), and come home to my mother, who cooked something special for the both of us. She will tell me stories of how my father used to serenade her when they were young, how she tried to evade him but failed because my father was too persistent. We will laugh together - my mother might tear up a little, but I will hug her even before she realizes that no one will give roses to her ever again every Valentine's Day. I will hope that a kiss and an embrace will suffice for a costly bouquet of flowers. We will bid each other good night, then enter our respective rooms. I will close the door and lie in my bed, thinking of the day that was, until I fall into a dreamless sleep.
Well. Valentine's Day is all about loving. I may not be in a romantic relationship, but I can always foster relationships that I have with my family and friends. There's no reason for me to be lonely this upcoming Hearts Day, and I know you have none, too. We can always be happy, if we choose to be.
With the Cebu Dancing Inmates
One of the coolest experiences I had during the PAMRA 2013 tour is meeting the YouTube sensations themselves, the Cebu Dancing Inmates! The guests were really ecstatic especially when we were invited to come down and dance Gangnam Style with the prisoners.
I never did get the hang of dancing Gangnam Style, but it was worth making a fool of myself in front of everybody else who thought that they were also making fools of themselves.
I went back to my alma mater a couple of days ago to claim my diploma. Yes, only after 9 months did I finally lay my hands on the parchment that I worked so hard to get. A piece of paper that reinforces to me the fact that I am done with college.
While I was on the campus, I dropped by a stall in the shopping center that sells UP merchandise. I decided to buy a UP hoodie because (a) I didn't have a UP hoodie, (b) I have money to spare, and (c) I just want to buy the damn hoodie.
Sigh. There are days when I just can't help but miss college. Like today.
With newfound friends Jed Lunario and David Derrick (c) Michael Burdeos
Upon alighting the plane that whisked us away from Palawan and back to Manila, I went straight to the hotel, dropped my bags, tried to shake off the exhaustion and the sleepiness, failed miserably, then continued to the office to work on an AVP for a ball the next day.
I have not slept nor eaten as much as I normally do. Coordinating with different agencies and fixing unexpected crises continuously took their toll on all aspects of my being, but I - surprisingly - am not (thoroughly) regretful that I have been chosen to be a part of the 10th PAMRA Tour, an event that took me to four different destinations in the Philippines, two of which I have never set foot in.
Going into the trip, I never really had any expectations that I would enjoy it so much. After all, I had to document the participants’ every action, observe my surroundings and record them as materials for future articles, and assist our sister company in maintaining a smooth, flawless tour. In short, I had to work, I had to focus on my work, I had to make sure everything will work.
But surprises do come when you least expect them to. I made friends with people who I otherwise wouldn’t have met under normal circumstances. I realized that I can only drink so much (or so little, rather) liquor. I discovered that the smell of puke can cling so strongly on leather. And re-discovered that my voice is most suited for boy band songs. Unfortunately.
The past couple of weeks were challenging, but the moments leading up to the inevitable end of the 10th PAMRA Tour more than made up for all the stress I had to go through.
So Sick of Being Sick
You know what sucks? Being sick. You know what sucks more? Being sick when there's tons of things to be done!
I may be frail, but I assure you, I don't get sick very often. So when I did get sick a couple of days ago, imagine the horror I felt. I was forced to lie on the bed for one whole day, as if I had an imaginary straitjacket that prevented me from moving even an inch! All because of heaps and heaps of chocolates (eaten without H2O on the side) and inflamed tonsils! How can something so sweet be so evil?
During my darkest, most boring moments, my mother kept a very watchful eye on me, because she knew that if she let her guard down, I would've tried to watch TV or play video games despite the state I was in. Mothers do know best!
So here I am, 3 days after, reporting for work but still not in the best shape I could possibly be in. I hate the fact that not only do I have coughs but colds as well! Normally, I wouldn't be fussing about this a lot but I will be travelling for the next two weeks and I simply cannot be feeling down. Boo!
I need a panacea! An elixir! A remedy! Where is Jason Mraz when you need him? (Get it, get it?)
No matter how big a splash you make in this world, whether you're Corey Feldman, Frankie Muniz, Justin Bieber or a talking teddy bear, eventually, nobody gives a shit.
Narrator, Ted
I grabbed the opportunity to go back to my Alma Mater last December 14, 2012 during the annual Lantern Parade. My former classmates/officemates and I had a hard time getting a ride to the university after work, but the stress all faded away once we set foot in the campus.
Since my phone isn't really made to capture quality photos, I wasn't able to take a lot of view-able images. We arrived late, so we didn't see all of the lanterns made by respective colleges, schools, and institutes in the university. Those we saw, however, were grotesque, ingenious, humongous -- simply gorgeous.
There was a lot to celebrate that night. The lantern by my home college (UP College of Mass Communication) won first place, I met old and new members of my college organization, and I was able to see the much-anticipated fireworks! I believe that was the first time I managed to stay that late during the parade.
"Schizophrenia"
I honestly don't know how I could get through everyday life without music. I have been dependent on it ever since that first bus ride to school and back during my second year in college.
"Tell me who your friends are, and I'll tell you who you are." "Clothes make a man." I believe in these sayings, but there are a whole lot of other factors that speak about what kind of people we are. Like our taste in music. So, I am sharing with everyone some songs from my playlist. These are more than entertainment to me -- each song conjures memories of the past, a flurry of emotions, and some even transport me to the far corners of my imagination until such time when I have to step down the bus or out of the train.
Here's to hoping that you understand the inner workings of my eccentric/crazy/overworked mind. And to a more enjoyable journey, no matter how long or short it takes.

We went to Tanauan, Batangas last December 8, 2012 to cover the Ala Eh! Festival.
I have not heard of it until a couple of months ago, when I was asked to endorse the event on a partner website. Thanks to Google and affiliated sites, I learned that the festival has been going on for four years now and it has greatly contributed to the growth of tourism in the area.
It was raining when we got to the place (via a cool jeepney), so I was rather fearful of how our coverage will fare. After all, who wants dim clouds and rain pellets messing with the flashy costumes and gay expressions of the performers and audiences? Thankfully, the rain clouds parted to reveal a smiling (judging from the heat, it must be grinning, or beaming) sun as the parade snaked its way to the municipality.
Despite the crowd and the intensely-glaring sun, I had fun walking down the streets lined with stalls where the province's finest products, ranging from food to clothing to accessories and even services such as grooming were made available to tourists and locals alike.
It's half past 1, I'm all alone, and I need... to set things straight.
It makes me sad that I have not been very good in updating this blog, my 8 followers (not counting stalkers, if any), and even myself on the things that have happened in my life during the past year up to the present. I am not blaming work, or family, or anything for the lack of entries -- except maybe this effed-up Internet connection.
I will try my best to catch that all-too elusive thing we know as "inspiration". Until then, I just have to tap into my OC self and tweak things here and there. I'm going, going, going...
