on bulking, will smith hockey, and jack hughes' game
from the photos recently posted it looks like will is a bit leaner than he was at the beginning of the offseason. we'll see if that's just an eye thing or angles or clothing choices or what when the season starts. but for the sake of my pondering let's assume he is back to being around 170-175.
the most typical critique of his game / #1 area to improve as listed by scouts tends to be to "get bigger" I wonder if there ever comes a point when the media will just give up on it. should they? should that continue to be his goal? I ask because when he was drafted Will said he models his game after Jack Hughes. Jack was like. 5-10lb lighter than Will at the start of the season. His stats are updated now but on my life Jack was 165 in December. Now I won't say that the NJ media doesn't give Jack shit for it, because I'm pretty sure there is a clip of him snapping at them to quit asking about his plans to change up his summer training following his shoulder injury. But ☝️ having Jack gain weight does no longer seems to be the focus around his game anymore especially since the Olympics.
I remember reading that Jack is actually incentivized not to pack on the pounds or he risk sacrificing his coveted speed. Jack is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL and that is really important to how he plays the game. I will say that is a significant difference from Will- whose maximum speed is Jack's average. But does adding that 5lb of muscle even make that much of a difference?? Are JHughes defenders exaggerating the effect it would have on his skating? Girl idk!!
It makes me wonder if Will really should continue to focus on his physique to improve his game or if he'll only enjoy marginal improvements to it. I don't watch Jack Hughes skate enough to confidently say that they play the same game and therefore advice to Jack or lackthereof should apply to Will or vice versa.
That being said, Jack Hughes, at 175lb, is injured like, all the time. And literature DOES suggest that packing on muscle can help mitigate injury, which of course is everything in hockey. I think about Sidney Crosby, who has crazy strong legs- legs that make him near impossible to knock off a puck.
All of this to say is 1) I think it's interesting that Will is constantly told to pack on muscle, when the person he models his game after is the same weight, if not lighter than him and 2) i wonder if the scouts are right and he truly cannot hit his ceiling if he doesn't gain that extra 5lb of muscle and 3) I wonder if the reason that Jack Hughes doesn't get shit for it is because he's now Golden Goal boy or if his game genuinely doesn't call for him to be stronger/bigger.
