There was this incredible feeling of inner peace; a feeling so pure and hopeful, that eventually everything was going to be okay. That the world was my oyster once again, and that the person I wished to be and the life I desired to lead was for my taking, if only I embraced the change.

A hasty, spontaneous getaway to a part of the country I’d always dreamt about but never quite made it to; the silver lining to the end of a relationship is the urge, the desire to flee and escape any form of normality or distinct familiarity.

The dreadlocks, the tattoos, the extreme sports, skindred, vans, the alcohol-fuelled fun; the escape was not so much of an escape but a gathering of reminders that were a part of a collection of not-so-distant memories.

I’ll look back at this period in my life and wonder why I ever cried or gave a shit about some unemployed job-seeking bum who smoked and drank around the clock and loved me like no one has ever done before. It really was real, what we had.
