A synopsis

Y2K was more than some excuse to party hard. In the chaos of the blackouts, a virus was released from a lab somewhere that ravaged the globe. Now, some years later, Jo lives alone in a fire lookout tower in the middle of the woods with her cat, Rascal. Her interactions with the living are few and far, mostly over radio with a group that has it made for them, but Jo refuses to let herself rely on others. When disaster strikes and forces her to leave her home once again, can Jo learn to trust the people who care for her?

Seeing Red

I didn't realize at first, with the face so utterly gone. (It wasn't gone though, was it? It was still there, splattered on the walls, slipping off in pieces from the bashed-in skull, under my nails, between my teeth, lining my throat, filling my stomach with rising bile.) Who was this who was now unrecognizable as human?

I took in the rest of my surroundings, trying to get my bearings, and... Oh. Oh God. I stared at the picture that had been on the wall before I lost time and now lies on the floor, the frame broken and covered in blood but still distinct with the puffy glitter paint childishly decorating the white wood in flowers and kitty cats and rainbows. The photo in the frame: a woman; a man; a little girl, no more than six years old with her daddy's nose and her mama's brown eyes; all smiling and wearing their best clothes.
