Sondra Perry is a media artist whose work investigates "blackness, black femininity, African American heritage" and the portrayal or representation of black people throughout history, often centring on the way blackness influences technology and image making. Perry explores the duality of intelligence and seductivity in the contexts of black family heritage, black history, and black femininity.

What Would You Do? - The Dead Black Body & You
How often do you turn on the television or click on the radio or look at an article and see another person of color’s life taken away through methods of police brutality? How often has their death received justice in the name of the law, even though the loss of a life can never be matched in value? How many of us can say that All Lives Matter but grow uncomfortable and/or upset when we want confirmation that the black ones matter as well? How many of us can remember the names of the innocent black lives slain instead of knowing them as “black kid that got shot” or “the lady that got killed?” How many of us can say that we can and will come to the aid of another when there is trouble? How many of us will look the other way or pretend like they didn’t see anything? How many are comfortable with the realities they choose to live in and the ones they actually exist in? What would you do?

Torkwase Dyson is an multimedia artist and painter that considers spatial relations an urgent question both historically and in the present day. Through abstract paintings, Dyson grapples with ways space is perceived and negotiated particularly by black and brown bodies. Explorations of how the body unifies, balances, and arranges itself to move through natural and built environments become both expressive and discursive structures within the work.
Unkeeping surveys two years of Dyson’s research into minimal geometric abstraction as a system used to deepen our understanding of the built and natural environment. This ambitious work spans modular architecture, data visualization, and black spatial matters under the rubric of environmentalism. For this exhibition she presents drawings, paintings,and sculpture that deconstructs sites such as auction blocks, garrets, lynchings, and sidewalks in order to reconstruct humanist narratives in their place.

Performance by Tameka Norris at YBCA apart of:
"Radical Presence: Black Performance in Contemporary Art"
Norris’s untitled performance tests not only the artist’s ability to tolerate pain, but also the audience’s ability to bear witness to pain. The artist literally bleeds for art as she first cuts herself and then marks the walls in an action that gives new meaning to the term "gestural painting."
Tameka Norris, also known as Meka Jean, uses herself as the subject for her paintings, videos, photography, music, performance, and installations to explore what forces shape her identity. She came into art through making her own hip hop music videos.
This performance was the first work I ever saw from her. It got me interested in the perceived endurance and strength a black woman is pressured to have to survive another day in this society. It made me question how others could watch that pain and the politics of a black woman performing for a white audience.

Lex Brown is a New York based contemporary video and performance artist. Her work uses dark humor, language, sound, and sequence to “de-internalize racism and sexism” and to “subvert the economy of emotion.” Her work encompasses performance, sculpture, and writing.
