Book Spotlight
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire actually starts fifty years before present day. It tells about how the Riddle family was mysteriously killed and their groundskeeper, Frank Bryce, was the suspect. And was then declared innocent.
Now an elderly man, Mr. Bryce wakes up in the middle of the night and sees a light on, in the abandoned Riddle house. He decides to go an investigate. Which turns out to be a really bad idea and he dies at the hands of Voldemort. Harry wakes up in the middle of the night, with throbbing pain from his scar. Fearing that Voldemort might be near, Harry writes Sirius.
The next morning, Uncle Vernon receives a letter from the Weasleys’ asking if Harry can join them at the Quidditch World Cup. Uncle Vernon, unwillingly allows Harry to go. The Weasleys show up the next day in a boarded up fireplace. The twins “accidentally” left a tricky piece of candy on the ground, which Dudley eats and begins to inflate.
Early the next morning, everyone leaves for the Cup. They travel by portkey, which is a very quick way of travel for a long distance. They have a wonderful time at the World Cup where Ireland wins, but Viktor Krum, the Bulgarian Seeker, catches the Snitch.
The following night, a group of Death Eaters and Voldemort torture 4 muggles. Harry, Hermione, and Ron escape into the woods, and Harry discovers his wand is missing. Moments later someone fires a the Dark Mark into the air, and a house-elf is found holding wand at the scene of the crime.
When they finally get to Hogwarts, Dumbledore announces that their will be a TriWizard Tournament and that Mad-Eye Moody will be the new professor of the Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Mad-Eye Moody teaches them the three unforgivable curses, Imperius, Cruciatus, and Avada Kedavra and Harry learns how to successfully fend off the Imperius Curse. Meanwhile, Hermione founds a group that wants to free house-elves from their slavery.
In late October, people from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang arrive. Ron is thrilled to death to see that Viktor Krum has come with Durmstrang. On Halloween night, the Goblet of Fire spits out the names of the Champions who will compete in the TriWizard Tournament. Cedric Diggory, Fleur Delacour, Viktor Krum, and Harry Potter are chosen. Chaos erupts because Harry is too young to participate in the tournament, but because the Goblet’s decision is final Harry has to participate. Ron is incredibly upset with Harry and gives him the cold shoulder. Harry grows frustrated with how few people believe that he didn’t put his name into the cup.
The first task comes closer and Harry is getting nervous. during the weighing of the wands, reporter Rita Skeeter interviews Harry Potter, for what she says will be an article about the tournament. She ends up publishing an article, that was extremely exaggerated article about Harry’s tragic past.
Before the first task, Hagrid invites Harry out for a late night walk, which becomes Harry’s first hint for the Tournament. Harry tries to warn Cedric and Moody overhears. Moody tells Harry that he should his broom to get past the dragons. Harry and Hermione spend hours practicing charms so that Harry can summon his broom stick. At the first task, Harry summons his broom, flies past the dragon, gets the golden egg, and receives high marks. Ron decides that he can’t give Harry the cold shoulder anymore.
Professor McGonagall announces that the Yule Ball is approaching and that the champions must find partners; it becomes a very difficult task. Harry tries to ask Cho, but finds out the Cedric has already asked her. Hermione is upset that Ron asked her as a last resort date, but she already has a date but who say who. Ron and Harry end up with the pretty but annoying Patil twins as their dates. They end up being miserable the entire time.
After the ball, Cedric hints at Harry that he should bathe with the golden egg. When Harry returns to Gryffindor tower he finds Hermione and Ron fighting about why Hermione went with Viktor Krum instead of Ron.
The next day, Hagrid refuses the teach because Rita has written an article saying that his Giant heritage gives him an aggressive nature. Hermione insults Rita for writing such awful articles, while at Hogsmeade. That night Harry takes the Egg into the bath and it sings to him that he will have an hour to rescue something valuable. On his way back, wearing his Invisibility cloak and looking at the Marauder's Map, he sees Mr. Crouch in Snape’s office. In surprise he drops the golden egg and it makes a horrible screeching noise.
The night before the second task, Harry has still not figured out how to breathe under water. He falls asleep in the library and is awakened in the morning by Dobby, who give him some gillyweed. The Gillyweed gives him gills. He easily swims through the water and decides to wait to see if all the champions rescue their people, when Fleur fails to get her sister, Harry brings both her and Ron to the surface, even though he comes up last, he receives the highest marks for morals in completing the task.
Rita publishes an article saying that Hermione toys with the hearts of both Harry and Viktor. and Hermione starts receiving hate mail. Harry, Ron, and Hermione meet up with Sirius Black, or Padfoot, in Hogsmeade. He informs them that Mr. Crouch’s son was in fact a death eater.
The four Champions are taken to see the grounds for the maze, their third task. On the way back, Viktor pulls Harry to the side and asks if he is at all romantically interested in Hermione. Harry of course says no. Then a crazed Mr. Crouch appears from the forest demanding to speak to Dumbledore.Harry takes off to get him, leaving Viktor behind. When they return they find Viktor stunned and Mr. Crouch gone.
In Divination class, Harry falls asleep and dreams about Voldemort. He wakes up screaming and clutching his scar. He goes to Dumbledore and Dumbledore fears that Voldemort is growing stronger.
The morning of the third task, Rita prints an article about how Harry fainted in class and is possibly disturbed. The champions enter the maze. Harry finds his way pretty easily. Soon Harry and Cedric are the only ones still in the running. They arrive at the trophy at the same time and agree to touch it at the same time. It turns out to be a portkey.
It takes the boys to a graveyard far away, where Cedric is instantly killed and Harry is tied up. Voldemort is reborn. He challenges Harry to a duel, where he tries to kill Harry. Harry is just able to pull out a disarming spell. The light from the two spells stay connected and Voldemort's past victims come out of his wand to protect Harry, giving him time to save Cedric’s body and get back to Hogwarts.
Harry receives prize money for winning the tournament. The term is coming to an end and Dumbledore tells everyone that Cedric was killed by Voldemort and that they all need to band together to win.
On the train home, Hermione shows Harry and Ron, a beatle. It is Rita in her animagus form. She had caught her and warned her not to write any more awful stories. Harry gives his winnings to the Weasley Twins to help them start their practical joke company and asks they help Ron get new Dress Robes.
