dicentra spectabilis ‘alba’ - bleeding heart.
This is Andromeda polifolia. Bog-rosemary
I am currently working as a tutor in botanical systematics and this was one of the plants we had in this recent tutorial course. It belongs to the family Ericaceae :)

Fritillaria meleagris 🌷Schach(brett)blume
Ficaria verna, the former Ranunculus ficaria.
Scharbockskraut ✨ or pile-wort etc…
A small (partially) creeping wild flower with heart shaped leaves. The yellow petals are actually no real crown petal, but nectary leaves (? No clue how to translate it) of the former perigon, while the actual former tepals became what now looks like the sepals :) but it’s actually still a perigon. When you pluck one of the yellow fake-petals out, you can see a tiny scale on the inner corner ~ a nectary scale. (Please excuse a german student struggling to find the correct botanical terms)
🧄 Alliaria petiolata 🌱
Knoblauchsrauke :) I also have one on the balcony, but it’s very common here, everywhere on the side of the road or the side walk etc... It’s leaves are edible and taste garlicky! It’s quite easy to identify because the leaves smell strongly when you crush them….But I wouldn’t eat them from the side of the road because of the pollution from the cars….
This is Glechoma hederacea 🌱
Gundelrebe auf deutsch, or ground-ivy (and many more synonymous names… like creeping charlie). It’s used here to make flower crowns on Walpurgis (30.04.). I was gathering them today
Update on the mystery pot ✨
Today I realized that something new rose from the mystery pot. It’s so small and I have no clue what that could be. Leaves are familiar in shape but not texture … we will see! I’ll wait for the flower 😂 I’m really bad at systematics… which is cool because I’m doing my thesis in plant systematics ✨👌 but I work with DNA on phylogeny stuff so it’s not really important for me. Just embarrassing when anyone asks 👀😂
Veronica hederifolia.
I found one on the side of the road :D Ehrfeublättriger Ehrenpreis auf deutsch.
My little balcony friends 💚
I usually plant a lot of random things on my small 2-3qm balcony in my dorm. And this week things are staring to sprout! Well - I mean I’ve already sawn a few in January because otherwise they wont finish the fruits before winter ~ you know how it is (side eye to you Physalis 2022).
So tomato, joes long chili and Paprika are doing super good! I’ve planted an additional one for each, in case something happens, but seems like I can gift those to friends then!
Cress is going strong as always - but cilantro (in the front) has now also joined us! Yey!
And FINALLYYYY my beloved chives started to germinate!!! I’m so happy! Because I’ve had trouble with chives in forever. They just never grew. Although everybody says it’s so easy and all? Not for me. I had already given up and just bought a small pot, planted it right in the middle - and then they appeared! Welcome!!
Same kinda goes for my Alliaria petiolata (knoblauchsrauke, garlic mustard?). But I just tried that last year. Nothing grew. And this year, right out of the abandoned pot, she emerged 💚 (btw right amongst my beloved rucola, which is doing great too. Had to pick it out and separate it because I was told sometimes garlic mustard can make allelochemicals and I don’t want it to fight the rucola. I NEED it for my veggie pizza.)
Also these seeds started their journey! But I’m not too sure what it is. Some small flowers i think. Hope we’ll find out later this year!
Besides that, I also just put my Kalanchoe (Brutblatt) outside. It might still be a bit too cold for my girl, but she is so strong and such a bad ass (I recently gathered all of the seedlings in a pot, nothing else, and just left them - guess what happened? Yea they now grow ON eachother..), I think she’ll endure it. And be happy about the sun and rain she’s gonna get during the day.
Also, just in the last few days: 5/8 species of sunflowers reached the light! Hellloooo 💚
Further my mint clones are very happy as always. And basil and parsley just recently joined us, so I’ll have to wait and see wether they like their spot or … maybe it’s still a little too cold. I’m hoping for the best! I just don’t have the space in my room to keep them inside.
Last year i gathered a lot of random seeds around my home and just threw them into a pot. This year a lot of random stuff started to grow ~ it’s very exciting to see what’s gonna grow. Right now it looks like this. I can even already identify one 💚
The one I can already identify is:
Cymbalaria muralis
Mauer-Zimbelkraut or ivy-leaved toadflax in english.
It’s this one:
Also I highly suspect the one at like ~ 10-12 o’clock 😂 is probably Lotus corniculatus (gewöhnlicher Hornklee, bird's-foot trefoil) but let’s wait for the flower.
Also the roundish leaves suggest some kind of ~ Geranium maybe? Probably. We‘ll see! Exciting
Walked around the university and saw some friends!
Candytuft flowers (Iberis sempervirens). I just learned that these are Braesicaceae and not Asters. :0 The flowerheads threw me off. The individual flowers have four part symmetry though like a good mustard.
Grape hyacinth (Muscari sp.). Alexis Nikole (BlackForager) did a video on these that taught me that the flowers are edible and can be used to color drinks!
Common silverweed (Potentilla anserina)
What's poppin' in late February: Part 2 of ~7
Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica) Creeping Charlie (Glechoma hederacea) Periwinkle (Vinca minor) Ivy-Leaved Speedwell (Veronica hederifolia)
