Saw a tiktok today of someone ranking their favourite fictional character ships ever and while there were several popular ships im familiar with about halfway through i realised I already could tell that there weren't going to be any f/f ships on there — and I was right there weren't! Several slash ships there but no femslash ones. And when checking the comments, people were all agreeing or adding their own suggestions, and again not a single ship I saw suggested was f/f.

And it's just so interesting to me how this clearly shows the disparity within fandom spaces supposed love and support of queer representation and the reality of male characters still being elevated and celebrated above female ones, in keeping with our society's dominant ideologies.

And to be clear im not saying that you must prefer fictional relationships outside of your own sexuality, just that it's interesting how fandom spaces seem to accept doing so for m/m ships but not f/f. Even if ur not a wlw yourself you should try engaging in some f/f ships — especially if your someone who regularly engages in m/m ships.

"Male characters are just written better" don't care. You guys have no issue with applying your own fanon personalities onto characters who only have limited or sometimes no screen time and putting them into m/m ships. Start doing the same with female characters!! And when there's enough interest and engagement in female characters then the quality of the writing will improve!!

We curate our own fandom spaces and if we want to still cling to the claim that fandom is a space to create and celebrate diversity, you need to pull your weight more than just reading your basic white m/m ships
