Today I'm sharing an image from October 2013. I saw this sunset on the way to California with my mother and I was just blown away by the brilliance of the sky and stopped briefly at the Correo exit on I-40 so I could try and capture it. I like to think that I did it some justice. Enjoy!

Today I'm sharing a shot I took from a road near Pojoaque High School in late July of 2013. We're looking eastwards over low hills cut into rift-filling sediments of the Santa Fe Group (likely Miocene in age) and the monsoon clouds mostly obscure the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the background. I love the way the late afternoon light keyed up the color of both the juniper-covered hills and the clouds beyond. Enjoy

I recently went through a number of exposures of irises from a visit to the Botanical Gardens in the middle of May 2015 and was struck by the beauty of this shot. That visit was notable because it rained briefly a little while after I arrived and gave me the delightful combination of soft lighting and lingering water droplets on the flowers. Enjoy!

I took this time exposure a few hours after sunset near the end of December in 2011. I had been thinking about trying to capture the curves of I-25 at La Bajada south of Santa Fe at night for while and I finally got the chance to do something about it on the way back from a visit to Los Alamos. I discovered that the best view that I could readily access was on the bridge at the exit for Cochiti which is where I took this 42 second exposure. I like the elegant simplicity of the final image. I took this HDR trio in July of 2013 at the Elena Gallegos park at the edge of the Sandias. The boulder of 1.44 billion year old Sandia Granite in the foreground is part of an old debris flow carried by Arroyo del Pino out of the mountains and judging from the vegetation, it hasn't moved in at least a hundred years. The clouds that day were magnificent, and I love the way the boulder and the grass clump in the foreground balance each other. Enjoy!

I found this succulent in a planter down at the Botanical Gardens back in May of 2012. I believe it is an Aeonium x 'Poldark', a cultivar that appears to have been developed at the UK's Trewidden Nursery. Aeonium's are tender succulents that are mostly native to the Canary Islands, with a few species growing elsewhere, and they readily hybridize. Interestingly, they are part of the same family, Crassulaceae, as Jade Plants and Hen's and Chicks, both common houseplants and most of the plants in the this shot are probably in the same family as well. I like the way the marks from water droplets evaporating add detail to the leaves. Enjoy!

Today I'm sharing an image from my late September 2015 Aspens Trip to southern Colorado. I found this stand of Aspens (Populus tremuloides) on a mesa west of Weminuche Creek and was lucky enough to capture this early thunderhead behind them. The image is slightly misty because my lens and filter kept fogging up during the 20 minutes or so that I was in the area. I think it gives things a slightly ethereal feel which I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Enjoy!

I found this trio of different colored Morning Glory flowers in a garden here in Albuquerque back in early August of 2014. I'm glad I got to these early enough in the day for the flowers to still be this open and I find the composition to be rather appealing. Enjoy!

I found this Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) on our July 2012 Grand Canyon trip, near Sinyella Canyon, where it posed for a few moments with a newly caught fish in it's beak as I drifted past. I took a handful of pictures of this unusual moment and I like the Mauv Limestone boulders in the background of this one the best. Enjoy!

I took this HDR trio of the upper Rio Grande upstream of Creede, Colorado back in October of 2011. We're looking downstream and southeast towards the high country on the northeast corner of the Weminuche Wilderness. The high peak on center left is 12,857 ft. Fisher Mountain, with a rounded form that's typical of high points in this part of the San Juans, probably as a result of the extensive volcanism that occurred here between approximately 35 mya and 22 mya and which has been subsequently dissected into the topography we see today. The rocks on top of the mountain are the 26.4 mya Fisher Quartz Latite which erupted from the Creede Caldera (centered around Snowshoe Mt. which is out of shot to the north of Fisher Mt.). I particularly like the way the silver of the river contrasts with the yellow of the fall foliage on the far side of the valley. Enjoy!

I went to a very nice party this weekend and at the end of the night I spent a bit less than 10 minutes shooting the fire as a friend fed it with weeds. I took about 250 exposures in that time and it was actually really difficult to pick a favorite because I discovered that looking at pictures of the flames was almost as mesmerizing as watching the flames themselves. I like this particular shot because it covers a nice gradient of color and I love the shapes of the flames. I suspect that if you look at it for long you'll find an image or two hidden in the fire as I did. Enjoy!

I found these lovely Hollyhocks (Alcea sp.) in my neighborhood in Albuquerque in early June of 2013. I just love how the colors turned out in this shot, and for a bonus, I caught a bee about to visit one of the blossoms right at the top of the image. Enjoy!

Today I'm sharing an image from our July 2012 Grand Canyon trip. I took this late in the afternoon from our camp at Cove Canyon (Mile 174.2) looking upstream to the east as I watched the last major thunderhead of a truly spectacular day drift out of sight. The rocks range from the Cambrian Bright Angel Shale at the bottom up through the Mauv Limestone and the Mississippian Redwall Limestone to the redbeds of the Permian Supai group on the top of the far wall. The rim visible from the river in this section of the canyon is formed by the resistant Esplanade Sandstone of the Supai Group, which took it's name from the broad platform formed on top of it in the Western Grand Canyon. I find the way that the curve of the bright clouds echoes that of the shadowed hillside below to be very appealing. Enjoy!

I took this close-up of a Magnolia blossom at the Overland Park Arboretum in Overland Park, Kansas back in March of 2012 and I really like how the delicate colors of the petals came out here. Enjoy!

I took this shot during my spectacular Aspens Trip with Pat in October 2011, at the Grass Lake area in the eastern San Juan Mts of Colorado. I've previously shared a number of images from the two days we spent there on that trip, and I continue to be impressed with just how productive that time was photographically. I took this particular shot on the first morning after the heavy frost and ground fog had burned away but before the thunderstorms of the early afternoon and I love the way that the curves of the land in the foreground echo those of the clouds. Enjoy!

I haven't shared a picture of a geranium for a while. I ended up visiting an old ranch house on the eastern end of Aravaipa Canyon the day after Christmas last year and snapped a few shots of this backlit geranium while I was there. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out. Enjoy!
