“In the 1950s Jean Barthet was the in-vogue milliner who made hats for numerous celebrities, and his presentations were closely followed by the press and leading figures of the time. Jean had designed a dance-themed collection and decided to open the presentation with four young dancers. He mentioned it to a friend who offered to bring along her daughter and three of her daughter’s friend, all four of them pupils at the Paris Opera Ballet. Jean asked his friend, Madame Bardot, what her 16-year-old daughter was called. Brigitte was the answer. The four girls opened the collection with a few dance steps. At the end of the presentation, several journalists asked Jean of the name of the young dancer who had been part of the opening. Brigitte Bardot was already beginning to attract universal attention.

My father became Brigitte Bardot’s friend and admirer, and she always stayed loyal to him, asking him to make hats for movies and fashion shoots. And he was the one who used to take photos of Brigitte wearing his famous hats.”
