Letâs Get Digital
As you take a tour or come see a show at The Bushnell. You may see some digital upgrades on the first and third floor of our building.
Metropolitan interactive and The Bushnell teamed up to install three digital signage systems March 2016.
Soffit
Charles Nelson Reilly
Institute Wall
We spoke with the Senior Coordinator of Digital Marketing, Leah Firebaugh, to find out more!
Why did The Bushnell name the digital signage systems: Charles Nelson Reilly, Soffit and Institution Wall?
About a year ago, The Bushnell created the Charles Nelson Reilly Society to recognize our team of over 600 volunteer ushers. Charles Nelson Reilly served as an usher many years ago, and even mentioned his time at The Bushnell in his one-man play âThe Life of Reilly.â In thanks to Mr. Reillyâs contributions to both The Bushnell and the entire theater community, we have named the society after him. From there, we wanted to find a fun, visual way to recognize the contributions of Mr. Reilly and all our volunteers. The scrolling names list the volunteers in different sizes and colors according to years of service, and Rookie of the Year and Volunteer of the Year winners pop up as their names scroll past. Also featured on this monitor is a quote from Charles Nelson Reilly and video interviews conducted by Mr. Reillyâs friend and fellow Bushnell usher Dr. Alan Schwartz. Simply put, The Bushnell could not function without our volunteers; we are glad to honor their service.
The Soffit defines the area where the sign is architecturally, nothing really about the sign itself. It was named by the company who came up with the concept and⊠just stuck.
The Institute Wall is a recognition area for donors who have made contributions in three major areas: Education, Innovation, and Community Engagement.
In the Institute for Education, we recognize the generosity of all who support Bushnell education programs. For over 20 years, more than 100,000 young people have experienced The Bushnell's award-winning education programs, which extend beyond the stage into the classroom and throughout the community. Programs include the nationally recognized PARTNERSÂź program, Bushnell Childrenâs Theatre, the CT Slam Poetry Program, the Noah Webster JAZZicians instrumentalist program, and the full-scholarship Ensign-Darling Vocal Fellowship. Â
The Institute for Innovation supports the incubation of all new, exciting and innovative ideas and initiatives at The Bushnell. Conceived of by lead funders Peter and Mary Fran Libassi, this Institute allows The Bushnell to explore, design and test new initiatives. Â Just a few of the initiatives that have benefitted from this innovative process of exploration include: the iQuilt Plan, which was founded at The Bushnell, Five Cent Productions and Elephant Eye Theatricals, The Bushnellâs producing arm, and PARTNERSÂź, The Bushnellâs award-winning education.
The Institute for Community Engagement provides support to varied Bushnell programs which seek to involve diverse segments of our community, groups that have been traditionally under-served and people from all walks of life. Programs, events and initiatives include: Â Family First Nights â which allow families to experience live theater for the first time, sensory-friendly and sign-language performances, Family Fun Day â our annual participation in Envisionfest, the iQuiltâs celebration of arts and culture around the city, neighborhood development planning and The Bushnellâs volunteer program.
What are the benefits of these new digital signage systems?
The main benefit to digital signage, besides looking cool, is the ability to adapt and change content very easily. As a major performing arts center, shows come and go and programs are constantly changing, so we need our messaging to keep up.
Do you have a favorite fixture?
I really like the Soffit! The layout is simple but unexpected with the offset screens. It makes a bold statement when people walk into our lobby.

The 2016-2017 Broadway Series
IF/THEN, August 3-7, 2016
IF/THEN is a contemporary Broadway musical about living in New York today â and all the possibilities of tomorrow. Â With unforgettable songs and a deeply moving story by the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning creators of NEXT TO NORMAL, this âfascinating, ambitious, and original new musicalâ (New York Post) simultaneously follows one womanâs two possible life paths, painting a deeply moving portrait of the lives we lead, as well as the lives we might have led.
A GENTLEMANâS GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER, October 25-30, 2016
Getting away with murder can be so much fun . . . and thereâs no better proof than the knock-âem-dead hit show thatâs earned unanimous raves and won the 2014 Tony Award for Best MusicalâA GENTLEMANâS GUIDE TO LOVE & MURDER!  GENTLEMANâS GUIDE tells the uproarious story of Monty Navarro, a distant heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession by â you guessed it â eliminating the eight pesky relatives (all played by one fearless man) who stand in his way.  All the while, Monty has to juggle his mistress (sheâs after more than just love), his fiancĂ©e (sheâs his cousin but whoâs keeping track?), and the constant threat of landing behind bars! Of course, it will all be worth it if he can slay his way to his inheritance . . . and be done in time for tea.
AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, November 15-20, 2016 AN AMERICAN IN PARIS is the new Tony Award-winning musical about an American soldier, a mysterious French girl and an indomitable European city, each yearning for a new beginning in the aftermath of war. Â Acclaimed director/choreographer and 2015 Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon brings the magic and romance of Paris into the perfect harmony with unforgettable songs from George and Ira Gershwin in the show that earned more awards than any other musical in the 2014-2015 season! THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, December 27, 2016- January 1, 2017 THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, winner of five 2015 Tony Awards, including Best Play, is hailed as âOne of the most fully immersive works ever to wallop Broadwayâ by The New York Times. Â In Simon Stephensâ dazzling adaptation of Mark Haddonâs best-selling novel, directed by Tony winner Marianne Elliott, fifteen-year-old Christopher has an extraordinary brain; he is exceptionally intelligent but ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. Â When he falls under suspicion for killing his neighborâs dog, he sets out to identify the true culprit, which leads to an earth-shattering discovery and a journey that will change his life forever. Â BEAUTIFUL â The Carole King Musical, January 17-22, 2017 BEAUTIFUL â The Carole King Musical tells the inspiring true story of Kingâs remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Â Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation. Â Featuring a stunning array of beloved songs written by Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, including âI Feel The Earth Move,â âOne Fine Day,â â(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,â âYouâve Got A Friendâ and the title song, BEAUTIFUL has a book by Tony nominee and Oscar nominated writer Douglas McGrath, direction by Marc Bruni, choreography by Josh Prince, and took home two 2014 Tony Awards and a 2015 Grammy Award. Rodgers & Hammersteinâs THE KING AND I, May 30 â June 4, 2017 Lincoln Center Theaterâs critically acclaimed production of Rodgers & Hammersteinâs THE KING AND I directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sher won four 2015 Tony Awards including Best Revival of a Musical. Â One of Rodgers & Hammersteinâs finest works, THE KING AND I boasts a score which features such beloved classics as âGetting To Know You,â âI Whistle a Happy Tune,â âHello Young Lovers,â âShall We Danceâ and âSomething Wonderful.â Â Set in 1860âs Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. FUN HOME, June 20-25, 2017 Every once in a while a Broadway musical comes along that surprises, moves and excites audiences in ways only a truly landmark musical can. Â The âgroundbreaking,â âupliftingâ and âexquisiteâ new musical FUN HOME was the event of the Broadway season, receiving raves from critics and audiences alike, winning five 2015 Tony Awards including Best Musical and making history along the way. Â Based on Alison Bechdelâs best-selling graphic memoir, FUN HOME introduces us to Alison at three different ages as she explores and unravels the many mysteries of her childhood. A refreshingly honest musical about seeing your parents through grown-up eyes, âFUN HOME is extraordinary, a rare beauty that pumps fresh air into Broadway.â Â (New York Times)
