ten things - 12.22.23

Mak and I learned a new game from the Budke's called Century Spice and really like it!

I thrifted a new cheetah print purse that I really like the size and style of it. It was only $6.

Mak and I tried out a new coffee shop called Penelope and it was inside this cute boutique shopping center by Milk Market.

Kenzo did a four day NAPA intensive and is getting so close to independently sitting. He can do it for a couple seconds at a time so I think by the end of the year we could maybe see him do it for thirty seconds to a minute.

Mak and I met up with Sarah and Ryan at Stanley Market for some sushi and barbecue and got to listen to a jazz band play. I really love the concept of smaller, boutique shopping centers.

Makoto opened up some of the presents I got him for Christmas and he really liked them. I love when he gets excited about stuff and I think I did a good job this year of getting him stuff I know he likes.

My hair is finally at a length where I like it, which is the first time since I cut it in August. I wish I hadn't cut my hair so short, but now I know to not do that again haha.

I've decided that when I have my own home I want a collection of different tea cups and saucers, mixed drink glasses, and wine glasses. We've never had the space to do it, but maybe I should start collecting for when the time comes.

I have started picking out potential words for my 2024 word of the year and am getting excited. It's one of my favorite things to do as we wrap up the year.

I'm reading Pride & Prejudice and it is a harder reader but I've read that it's a top read so I felt like I had to give it a shot. I even bought a night light so I could read in bed.

ten things - 09.30.23

Today I finally changed my nail polish color on my hands and toes. I went from a hot pink that I got done at the beginning of August to a soft green.

I'm still obsessed with the top coat called Seche Vive. It makes a home manicure look like a professional did it.

Something big happened the other day that I can't wait to share with everyone.

Kenzo had another keto followup and lab work done and everything is looking good so far.

We're over halfway through season twenty-five of the Amazing Race. We've been cruising through this season which we normally don't do.

Makoto and I cooked a new recipe we hadn't tried before: crispy rice with a shrimp dip. It was insanely good and we'll be making it again.

I got to bake a fall treat that was similar to an apple crumble loaf with my grandma the other day.

I'm extra addicted to Kenzo cuddles recently.

I'm still loving living at the base. I feel like we have an ideal set up for the price we pay and the benefits it gives us.

This time of year is very special because it was this time last year that we moved onto the base and started the YWAM journey. Can't believe it's already been a year of being here.

ten things - 09.23.23

Today is the first day of autumn. I am very excited for all things fall.

We went to Anderson Farms as a team and got to go through the corn maze, jump on a bouncy trampoline, do a tractor ride, and pick pumpkins.

We have been using the cash system to help curb our spending and it has been very helpful and a fun challenge. And since I love challenges, it has worked very well for me.

I'm starting to really understand that just doing the thing you are avoiding is the quickest and simplest route. For example, sometimes I dread doing my skincare routine at night so I post pone it by doing mindless other things and then when I actually do it, it only takes 10 minutes. Or if my email is backed up I stress about it for two days instead of just attacking the emails and cleaning up my inbox in 20 minutes. So this is a reminder to me: Just do the work that you need to do. Don't put it off.

I bought an alarm clock to see if that will help my scrolling at night. I'm trying to put my phone to bed every night so that I can focus on reading. We'll see how it goes.

Our team made a big meal for the Arbuthnot family a couple days ago and it was really fun to feel the comradery in the kitchen as we cooked.

We finished season 24 of The Amazing Race tonight and it was a really good season. Amazing locations, tough competitors, very close races to the finish line each episode, and interesting teams. Mak and I really wanna go on the show.

I thrifted some new clothes for my wardrobe. I'm trying to be more feminine and fashionable and so I bought pieces that were more dressed up than I usually pick. I'm over wearing baggy pants with baggy tops. I want to find clothing that is flattering to my shape.

I still don't like my hair. I think it's a cute cut, but I do not feel like myself. Every time I look in the mirror I'm really thrown off. I need to figure out how to style it until it grows out cause this is a rough feeling to constantly have. Danielle, listen to me, do not cut your hair short ever again.

I found a cocktail bar called Room For Milly that is so aesthetic and I want every place I visit to be like the experience I had there. Great atmosphere, great friends, great night, great memories.

ten things - 09.09.23

Kez surprised me for my birthday and it totally shocked me. The story is so funny and I literally had no idea.

Kenzo sat independently for over 20 seconds TWICE!

I bought a pair of platform crocs for my birthday, which is totally unlike me...but I actually really like them. I bought some charms too, which is also very unlike me haha.

We were told about a parking hack for Rockies' games and it was a total game changer. I love going in through the entrance you park next to. I've always gone through the same entrance for games and now all I want to do is go through this new one for future games.

We watched Brink for my birthday and I hadn't seen that movie since I was a teenager or younger so it was very nostalgic for me.

Kenzo got fitted for a stander which will help him with hip mobility and bone density. It's covered by insurance which is insane because it's almost $4000 if we had to buy it.

It's starting to feel like fall. I went on an early morning walk with Kenzo to the swings and the air was crisp and I can't describe it, but it smelled like fall haha

I've started using a timer to track my time. Like if I want to clean I'll set the alarm for 20 minutes and it's kinda crazy to watch what can get accomplished in that time. But also sometimes I think something will take way less time than it does. The timer has been helpful in showing me how quickly time goes and what actually can be done. I'm trying to be aware of time and this is definitely helping.

Makoto and I found a taco shop called bartaco and the aesthetic is very cute. We stumbled upon it on accident while we were grabbing coffee in LoHi. I love when that kinda stuff happens.

We went tubbing in Golden for Anders' birthday and it was so fun. I've always wanted to do it and we went on Labor Day so there were so many people there but it actually made it more fun hitting into other people's tubes and all the people on the sides of the river hanging out. I can't wait to go again!

I've been really into popsicles and ice cream. That's not my usual go to but this summer I have loved having cold stuff as dessert.

Kenzo started his therapy intensive and it has been very special to see his therapists work with him on our goals.

We rearranged our room so that Kenzo has more floor space to play on and it's been fun to see him move around so much.

Our DTS graduated on August 17th and it was a very special night.

I got a pedicure and chose hot pink cause that's what my mom would have done.

We were invited to Anisia's murder mystery birthday party and it was so much fun dressing up, playing a character, and all the fun details Katie put into the evening.

Makoto went to Costa Rica a couple of weeks ago and I did solo parenting for the first time and did a great job taking care of Kenzo and the base.

I cut my hair even shorter than last time. I don't love it and I don't hate it. I am still looking for my perfect hairstyle.

I created a list of things I want to do around my birthday and vacation time and I'm looking forward to crossing things off my list.

I think Cora's tampon packaging is very cool. I love when products care about the aesthetics.

ten things - 08.01.23

I'm excited that we're in the month of August. My birthday month!

Kenzo comes alive on the swing. His face lights up and you can just tell that he is loving life while he gets pushed. It melts my heart to see him so happy.

I bought a pink pair of jeans recently and I've been thinking in my mind of ways to style them. Still haven't landed on anything but I wanna wear them soon. Maybe to the Barbie movie?

I tried sand therapy for the first time today and it was really powerful. Play therapy really does unlock stuff from your subconscious.

Mak and I are trying night shifts with Kenzo. One night I'll be on duty for taking care of Kenzo if he wakes up and then we switch. I'm not sure I'm in love with it but we're trying it out.

I'm still adjusting to not having to pull my hair out of shirts and headbands and jackets now that it's short. I kinda wanna go shorter too haha.

The MA program's last day is tomorrow and it has made me really think about how quickly time goes and how important it is to be intentional. You think you have all this time to make plans and get to know people and now they're about to pack up and leave. I wish I had made more of an effort to spend time with them.

I made a summer bucket list with some very attainable goals, vague goals, and dreaming big goals. I like that there is some variety and focus that I've put into my summer. I think my coffee and makeup routines are almost down which means another two bucket list items checked off.

It's been on my mind again to start blogging and so I just need to do it. I always get stuck on what I want to say but I need to take the pressure off and just write whatever comes to mind.

I'm thinking about going to Italy with my dad, Mak, and Kenzo. There's some roadblocks but it's a possibility...

I've been watching Bob Ross painting episodes as I go to bed each night.

Mak and I have bonded over the Mission Impossible and Bourne movies.

I've had fun getting inspiration from Amazon and Pinterest for Kenzo's birthday party.

Harumi gets to meet Kenzo this week and we are so excited!

We landed on doing a School of Worship this fall and I think it's going to be a very sweet season getting to have worship more consistently.

I think I'm going to grow my bangs out and have been putting them back in little clips.

I redesigned my room a little and really like the way it flows.

Kenzo had to go to the ER the other night and the staff were so attentive and funny. We felt blessed to be in their care.

We are thinking about getting a new car that is being sold by Regi and Willie. Not sure if we'll actually do it, but we're thinking about it.

ten things - 04.27.23

I have been loving this color. My nails are currently painted this color thanks to the nail polish Sam bought me for Christmas.

The song High Priest has been on repeat in my mind.

I started reading the Jesus Storybook to Kenzo and love it. It brings the Bible to life.

I bought a new purse from Amazon that is really unique comparatively to my other purses. Geometric and structured with a long shoulder strap.

I'm still on the hunt for a new wallet since the wallet I currently am using has been in use for like seven years. I haven't been able to find one better so I'm still using it.

I have been drinking drip coffee with cream in the morning since it's been made already and saves me from having to make my own latte. I honestly just love drinking something warm and creamy in the morning.

Mak and I went swing dancing for Maddie's birthday last night and it was so fun. Creating dance moves and being in that environment was so special.

Kenzo's been talking a lot more lately and it's fun to hear the noises that come out of him.

He's also been holding his head up better since we've been putting him in his activity center to stand when we're doing stuff.

I have been using Winky Lux as a lipstick tint and it makes me think of my mom. I miss her.

The Gold of January

I had this idea to write about things I loved that happened each month of this year. I used to do a weekly review that shared my highlights, but I feel like going month to month fits my life a little easier now that I have a baby haha. I'm excited to look back on these lists at the end of the year and see all the amazing things I got to experience.

+ Mak's homemade falafel is the best falafel I've ever tasted

+ We got to stay at the YWAM San Diego Baja base with our YWAM team

+ I fell in love with playing Tortuga and Code Names

+ I learned how to steam milk for my espresso drinks

+ We started doing date nights every week with a date book we got from Kez and Jordan

+ I bought two very "me" tops (one is a zebra-ish print sweater top and one is a sheer geometric black and white print)

+ Kenzo rolled from his back to his tummy (although I did not witness either time he did it this month haha)

+ I've got to use a planner I really like

+ I found some brass candlesticks from Treasures that look really great in our room

+ I had breakthrough in my leadership and personal development (after a mini mental crisis haha)

+ We started sleep training Kenzo

+ Our second Bridge Sessions went really well

+ We added Ben and Paula to our team

+ We got a Costco membership (it feels like we're really adults now haha)

+ We've been really enjoying our new bedding and the way we redesigned our room

+ I got a gym membership and started working out

Looking Ahead to February:

I also wanted to add a section at the end of each blog to process what I was looking forward to for the coming month. For February I am looking forward to:

+ Locking in our staff roles and operating within our unique responsibilities here at the base

+ Celebrating Mak's birthday

+ Having Kenzo's nine month checkup and progress report

+ Honing in on our budget now that we have a lower income with Mak not working for KOFO (gotta get resourceful and more restrictive with spending)

+ Getting approved for Medicaid's food stamp program

+ Celebrating Valentines and Galentines Day

+ Taking more photos with people and exploring my creative side with photography/videography

+ Starting a seasonal scrapbook of our life (winter, spring, etc.) since we stopped our Chatbook subscription

+ Reading and writing more and spending less time on social media. My goal is to read three books this month since I'm halfway through two books already.

+ Kenzo rolling onto his tummy more and sitting up unassisted by the end of the month

The First Six Books of 2023

My goal this year is to read twelve books. One a month. This is my goal every year and somehow I never manage to accomplish it lol. But this year I put together a good line up of books that I want to read to help motivate me to keep reading. I will review the books as I go so that you can decide if you'd like to read them too.

January - "The Bait of Satan" - John Bevere

This book is a 10/10 recommendation. I was first introduced to this book by my friend Jordan when I mentioned that I easily get offended. I immediately bought it and went to work reading. I read it over the course of two months to really absorb what I was reading. I think it is an important book to read because all of us get offended; whether it's a friend, spouse, co-worker, family member, celebrity...it's easy to hold a grudge against someone. This book teaches how to get free of the offense you may be carrying and how to avoid offense in the future. I loved the declarations at the end of each chapter. They were great punchy points to remember what the chapter had been about and to declare over yourself throughout the week.

Looking Ahead To 2023

I can't believe we are almost done with another year. To me, the end of this year has been something I've anticipated because it was at the end of last year that I lost my mom. Today is one year from the date when my entire life changed. I remember talking to my mom briefly on FaceTime in the morning on our way to get Makoto tattooed. She was telling me that something I had said the night before really spoke to her and was full of wisdom. After the tattoo appointment we were on our way home and I called my dad asking if they wanted pizza. He said yes and I hung up the phone. About ten minutes later he called me back to tell me that mom was breathing. We were about fifteen minutes from the house and I remember praying and not really believing that anything truly bad could happen to her. She had had so many hospital moments that I hoped that this was just another. But at the same time, I had a lot of panic in my heart. The rest of the day is something I can share at a a different time, but all that to say, after my mom died at the beginning of 2022 I wondered how I would feel at the end of the year.

So here we are, at the end of 2022 and I am surprised at how the peace and grace of God has truly covered me this entire year. Obviously I have been very sad in some moments, but the overarching feeling has been one of peace. I thank God that His peace has covered me and allowed me to show up as a wife, mom, daughter, friend, etc. As I look ahead to next year I felt that God gave me a word for 2023. I love getting words as themes for my year. I feel like each year the word has been spot on. To recap:

And now, drum roll please, my word for 2023 is LEGACY.

God started speaking to my heart that the things I do this year will not just impact me or others in the moment but will ripple on throughout time. The things I accomplish this year will be part of my legacy of what gets passed on to my children and their children. Just like my mom has left me with a legacy of who she was and what she accomplished while on earth, I want to live each day with the mindset that my choices will outlast me. This is my legacy year.

10 things I want to focus on accomplishing this year:

Read through the entire bible front to back (on top of doing in depth studies).

Hone in on my photography/videography skills.

Read a book a month.

Workout three to four times a week.

Wake up early.

Be on my phone less.

Help Kenzo reach milestones.

Journal/blog consistently.

Be more intentional with expressing gratitude/love for others.

Upgrade my communication.

This year I didn't have a list of things I wanted to grow in or a bucket list of things I wanted to accomplish and that felt right for this year. There were so many changes to adjust to and I was able to focus on what was right in front of me. But now I feel the excitement of what God wants to do within me and through me and I'm stoked to be able to work on some areas in my life. As weird as it sounds, I really do feel like there is some magic to the start of a new year. 2023 is getting me excited and I hope to share more on here and on Instagram what God is doing.

Year In Review

It is 9:00 PM on December 29th and I am sitting in my bedroom with painted nails that are drying. I went sparkly to ring in the festivities of New Year's and our upcoming trip to Mexico. I wanted to take some time to reflect on this last year with some questions I found on Pinterest and thought this would be the perfect time to start the blog up again...

My word for 2022: Celebration

Best thing I did for someone else this year: Although it was very mutually beneficial, moving in with my dad was something that I think really helped him. Being in our family home alone probably feels very lonely and so I am very glad Makoto and I lived with my dad during my pregnancy and the first four months of Kenzo's life.

Most memorable moment of the year: Although there were many moments that are in the running, I'd say the 24 hours between having my water break and starting labor. I feel like that time period is seared into my brain. From FaceTiming people telling them my water broke, quickly packing up our bags, spending a few hours in the hospital, deciding to go back home, going back to the hospital the next morning, almost having an emergency c-section, having family visit the room, to the start of more serious labor. It was a wild 24 hours.

One great compliment you received this year: One that I get over and over is that I am my mom's legacy. I so badly wish she was here, but to know that so many people see my mom in me and know that I am making her proud really gives me peace.

Best advice you received this year: I feel like one or two moms told me to trust my gut and I feel like that has been something I keep coming back to when it comes to parenting Kenzo and even other areas of my life. Things like co-sleeping, pureé feeding, all the affection we give him. Somehow it just feels instinctual to know what to do for Kenzo.

Something you had never done before: I haven't felt like I've truly led something before but when we said yes to leading at YWAM Denver I feel like we had to step up. We are in charge of setting culture, making the final call on decisions, and having people look to us. It's been very stretching to not only learn how to lead a base, but learn to lead people as well.

Favorite place you visited this year: We didn't travel too much this year. We went to Oregon, California, Colorado, and Mexico if I'm not mistaken. Obviously Mexico was my favorite. Between the stunning sunrises, my favorite people, and being at a resort I'd never been to, it was just a great time.

Biggest lesson learned: God doesn't owe us anything and that gratitude is always a choice. After mom died I wrestled with the why's and the frustration of her not being healed, but God is still good and His nature is good and so I don't have to understand why He did something if I know those things to be true. Also, it is very easy to find the negative or to focus on what you don't have but there is always something to be grateful for and there are usually way more good things happening in your life than there are bad things.

Most newsworthy event: Accepting the position of campus leaders of YWAM Denver. It is still crazy to me that this is our life and yet at the same time it's hard to imagine us doing anything else right now. I am very thankful Mak and I get to be in full time missions again and that we get to be in Colorado while we do it.

What/whom are you most thankful for this year: I am most thankful for Kenzo but that is so obvious. He changed my life. After him I would say that I have come to feel very thankful for my church family. I am blessed to have been able to walk with them for twenty years now and have such consistency with them. I look around on Sunday and am filled with gratitude that I am a part of this church body.

Favorite show of the year: I continued to watch the rest of the series of Gilmore Girls at the start of this year and then Mak and I got into House for a few months. I'm rewatching GG since we moved onto the base and that's been fun. I love that show!

Favorite moments of the year:

+ Biking from our house in HB to Pacific City or a bench across from the ocean to think and read and journal.

+ Styling our basement apartment at dad's house.

+ Dad visiting HB and us going to the San Diego Zoo and whale watching.

+ Doing the babies course with Haylee.

+ Saying goodbye to my mom in the hospital.

+ Mom's celebration of life service.

+ Our trip to Mexico.

+ My walks around the pond with Kenzo.

+ My first date with Kenzo when we walked around the city.

+ Our stay in the hospital after Kenzo was born.

+ Doing silver sneakers with Haylee with our instructor Ken.

+ Our yard sale in HB as we started moving out of the house.

+ Our date day in Portland where we went to Twinings tea, got our favorite ramen, and the best Portland fog donuts.

+ Mak getting a tattoo of my name.

+ Moving onto the base.

I'm sure there were many more memories than just these, but these stood out in the few minutes I've sat here thinking about it.

I'm back!

I love writing and I've been missing the feeling of getting my thoughts out on paper, or in this case, the internet. So hello, I'm back!

The last time I wrote on this blog was in February and now it's September. A lot has happened since then. Makoto and I left Circuit Riders, moved from California to Colorado, started jobs, had a baby, and now have taken on the position of pioneering a whole new chapter of YWAM Denver as its campus leaders.

I have a lot of thoughts that have been flowing through my mind over the last six months. Having a baby and journeying through grief changes you as a person. Some parts of you shine brighter, some parts grow dim, and some parts appear out of nowhere. I have enjoyed getting to process life below the public's radar; it's helped me be more confident in who I am as I start to be more active on social media platforms again.

So what thoughts have I been thinking, you may be wondering...let me tell you!

Baby steps are good. Grief and motherhood sometimes makes you feel like you're out of control. The way you manage your time and what you're capable of doing in a day totally changes. At first, I felt super discouraged that things took way longer or that my mental capacity had shrunk. But it has allowed me to appreciate baby steps. I give myself way more grace now than I did before. Everything I want to get done in a day may not happen, but I accomplished at least a few things. Even if that was just regulating my grief and keeping my baby happy and safe.

Don't plan too far in advance and be flexible. I used to have so many goals and plans for my life. I was always thinking ahead. But I've learned that it's best to think short term. Don't get me wrong; if you're wanting to buy a house in the future, you'll need to plan how to save money for a down payment, maybe put in more hours at work, research locations and things you want in a house that fit within your budget. There is importance to long term thinking. But often times God will present something to us that wasn't on our radar and if we're too rigid in our idea of how life should look, we could miss out on something really special.

Life is in the little moments. I use to be a big bucket list person. Every new season, every new year, every new birthday I'd make a bucket list of ideas I wanted to accomplish. Go to this place. Do this activity. Change this behavior. But since having our son, I've learned the magic I'm looking for is literally in the smallest moments. Giving our son a bath and seeing him splash the water with joy, going on a walk and watching how the sun hits the trees, making a cup of coffee and realizing how complex the flavors are. I was so busy looking for the next big accomplishment that I was missing how special the little moments were.

Express yourself. I used to be very self reliant and hated conflict; to the point where I'd intentionally lose board games because I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings by playing to win the game. Or if a group of us were planning a night out, I wouldn't express my opinion because I wanted other people to be happy. But I'm learning that it's okay to say what you want and to do things that bring you joy. If you don't want to do something, it's okay to pass on the opportunity. If you are hurt by something, it's okay to let the person know. I feel like I've been learning how to express myself in a healthy way so that I don't end up resentful.

So there ya have it; a few things I'm learning right now. I hope you're learning things about yourself and figuring out how to really live this life. It's crazy that we only have this one life and we aren't guaranteed tomorrow. I pray that I can live each day to the fullest, focusing on what really matters and I hope that you will feel that way too.
