DRACHMAN CHIMERA FOUND AT BRIGGS
AMESTRIS | NORTH | NEWS | July 8, 1915
FORT BRIGGS -- by Stefan Golfinos -- According to sources in Fort Briggs, medical examiners matched the bite wounds of Briggs mountain guards to bear teeth last night. While bears are common during the summer at Briggs, none have been known to aggressively and proactively attack humans.
A revelation was made this morning when the mountain guard, supplemented by a squad of men chosen by Major General Armstrong herself, discovered a Drachman man barely alive, buried in a snowdrift along the northern side of Mt. Briggs. The man was unconscious and rapidly succumbing to hypothermia, and was transported immediately back to the medical unit at Fort Briggs under high security.
When the man woke, however, he was extremely violent even under amounts of sedative that would normally knock out a man twice his size. The Drachman transformed into a bear chimera, attacking the medical staff, injuring two nurses and a doctor before being subdued by security. As of this moment, the Drachman remains in the intensive care unit, but Armstrong assured reporters today that she would personally interrogate him once he reached a stable condition.
The mystery, however, of how exactly Drachmans were able to develop the alchemical ability to transmute chimeras remains. The Drachmans are not well known for their alchemy; their strengths in war lie in weapons and artillery. Is it possible that the Drachmans are using our very own transmutation circles and theorems against us? If so, how -- or more importantly, from whom -- did they obtain this top secret military information? Indeed, Major General Armstrong will find herself in the hot seat, facing questions from the top brass on the rigor of her command.
WRANGLING BROS. RETURN TO CENTRAL
AMESTRIS | CENTRAL | NEWS | July 3, 1915
INGELHEIM PLAZA -- by Julia Alvarez -- The Wrangling Bros. Circus Company, Amestris' self-proclaimed " national clowns," are back in Central for the first time in two years. The traveling company has been touring South and West Amestris for the past two years, hitting small countryside towns as well as West City, South City, Dublith, Isidra, and Clearwater, to name a few.
The company continues to gain both audience and cast, three of whom, all newly-joined as of last year, are pictured above (from left to right, Darius, Yoki, and Heinkel). The Wrangling Bros., as is suggested by their name, specializes in animal acts. Darius and Heinkel have apparently shown a "certain talent and affinity for interacting with animals," while Yoki is a in training to be a clown. "He's still learning," Heinkel laughs, clapping Yoki's shoulder. Heinkel is hunkering and broadly muscled, oddly reminiscent of a lion, and Yoki's knees buckle under the weight of his hand. "But you know what they say: practice makes perfect. He's doing something like fifty sets of tumbles a day, right, Yoki-doki?" Yoki laughs uneasily, exuding awkwardness -- if he is indeed to be a clown, he has to lose the woe-is-me aura first. "Maybe if we knock him around enough," Darius jokes,"he'll crack and suddenly do all the tricks right."
The Wrangling Bros. will be setting up in Central Park's Ingelheim Plaza; the circus entrance is on South 1st Street and Coliseum Lane, and tickets will be on sale at the door. Their first show of the season will be on July 7th at 7pm; tickets are half-price and everybody gets a free bucket of their famous firecracker popcorn. Don't miss it!
AERUGO TO RE-ESTABLISH TRADE
GLOBAL | AERUGO | NEWS | July 3, 1915
DOMA -- by Elizabeth Haynesworth -- Something fishy is going on in the state of Aerugo. And by fishy, we mean actual fish! Fuhrer Grumman and King Phillipe Rico signed a joint peace treaty last night that would re-establish trade with the coastal country of Aerugo. The treaty is effective immediately; in fact, this morning, the fish markets of Doma were bustling with workers manning large refrigerated trucks bound already for South Amestris and Central.
The return of trade between Aerugo and Amestris is expected to be extremely beneficial for both countries. Previously, Amestris was Aerugo's chief trade partner; by comparison, neighboring Creta is is economically weaker, politically divided, and more sparsely populated, making trade difficult and risky. Furthermore, the landlocked Amestris has suffered from lack of imported Aerugan goods, such as seafood, marble, minerals, textiles, and manufactured goods. While Amestris has rich, fertile plains ideal for agriculture and livestock, Aerugo has rockier, mountainous terrain that is less suited for agriculture but has given rise to a strong mining industry. Amestrian chefs are already excited about the return of fresh seafood to their kitchens, and jewelers anticipate restocking their displays with handcrafted glass beads, flawless stainless steel, and precious Aerugan opals.
Lastly, better political relations between the two countries may also predict an increase in tourism to Aerugo. The famed beaches and beautiful coastal waters in Caprice, Amalfi, and Riviera are well-known to Amestrians but seldom-visited, though it is rumored that the Armstrongs and the Dietrichs have pristine villas along the Amalfi coast.
Dear Madame, I'm an officer approaching forty, and still a bachelor. I'm very fit, and take good care of my appearance. Do you have any tips for a middle aged man looking to fall in love with a younger woman?
AMESTRIS | CENTRAL | ADVICE | July 1, 1915
CENTRAL CITY - by Madame Christmas -
Dear Officer,The best advice I can give you is be kind. Any woman worth wooing will turn a good looking man down if he’s a jerk. Doesn’t matter how fit he is, doesn’t matter how amazing his paycheck, or what rank he is. If he’s not kind to her, doesn’t respect her as a fellow human, then he’s not deserving of her. Look at it this way: You want to be treated well, respected, loved and cared for. So does she.
Love happens naturally. Let it. Respect, on the other hand, is a conscious effort and requires time and work. Learn to treat all the women around you with respect and kindness, and you just might be surprised at the results.
Other than that, my best advice is that flowers never go wrong unless the woman is an Armstrong.
Dear Madame, I'm a military woman who is always so busy. Besides that, I'm surrounded by idiot men all the time and they're so tiring. What do you suggest I do to try to find a guy?
AMESTRIS | CENTRAL | ADVICE | July 1, 1915
CENTRAL CITY - by Madame Christmas -
Dear Military Woman,I have one bit of advice for you. Slow down. Stop looking. In all my years, not one person has had the right person come to them because they were actively throwing themselves on the next available potential significant other. Instead, nine times out of ten the right person comes to you when you least expect it. You’ll be out shopping and the young gentleman holds the door for you as you exit the store. Or you go to a party with a friend and there’s a nice person that you enjoy speaking with that also attends. I’ve known people to literally bump into each other on the street and end up together. It’s almost always when you’re not looking for love that you find it. So my advice for you would be to stop looking. Throw yourself into a hobby, not the nearest man’s arms. Find enjoyment and contentment in your life right now, because if you’re not happy without a man, I can guarantee you that you won’t be happy with one. As for what makes you attractive to men? (Because I know that’s your next question!) Believe it or not it’s all about your personality. If a guy’s going after you only for your body, run away. He’s not worth sticking around for. Become someone you’d like to be friends with. You just might be surprised.

ATTACK ON BRIGGS!
AMESTRIS | NORTH | NEWS | July 1, 1915
FORT BRIGGS -- by Isaac Meyer -- At around 6am this morning, the Drachmans, who had been soundly defeated by the Briggs Fortress not a week ago, launched a second attack. Three men in Brigg's mountain guard were killed, and three more were injured. Whereas the earlier attack was completely reliant on bullets and tanks, early reports reveal that these attacks are much more vicious in nature. The injuries sustained by the Briggs men include blunt force trauma, slash wounds, and bite wounds -- perhaps some new attack animal on the Drachman side?
We await comment from Briggs commander Major General Armstrong on the exact nature of this attack, and how exactly she expects to combat it. More details will be revealed in days to come.

AUTOMAIL OPERATIONS INCREASE 22.9%
AMESTRIS | WEST | NEWS | June 29, 1915
WEST CITY -- by Julia Blackwater -- Ten years ago, automail operations were rarely done, for its engineers were not medically trained, and its surgeons were not familiar enough with the internal circuitry to reliably connect wire to nerve. The operation itself is remarkably painful; the first operations killed many of its patients through sheer shock. In recent years, however, more and more automail engineers receive concurrent training in medicine and surgery, increasing the survival rate of these surgeries from 55.1% to 91% in just several years.
Doctors attribute this jump not only to leaps in technology, but also to recent publicity concerning the Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward Elric, and his companions, including Winry Rockbell, Lan Fan, and the posthumously-promoted Major Buccaneer. Doctor Richard Fenimore, a former surgeon-turned-lecturer in Central's University of Medicine, states that "Elric and his entourage have done well in attracting public attention to the functionality of automail limbs and dispelling misconceptions about them." West Amestris Hospital, one of the leading surgical centers in the nation, has seen an increase in automail operations of 23.8% in the past year, beating the national increase of 22.9%. "Moreover," Fenimore adds, "anaesthetics have also improved in both efficacy and safety, and while full sedation is not possible during most operations because we need to make connections from wire to live nerve, we hope that they can be done with minimal pain in the next five years."
MUSTANG PROMOTED, TO TRANSFER TO ISHVAL NEXT MONTH
AMESTRIS | CENTRAL | NEWS | June 29, 1915
MILITARY HEADQUARTERS -- by Isabelle Dixon -- Central Command has confirmed that Roy Mustang has been promoted to Brigadier General. This announcement comes as no surprise to members of the military, given the Brigadier General's heavy involvement in both quelling the uprisings of last year and restoring peace in Central during the aftermath.
Moreover, a simultaneous report was released today stating that Mustang, his team (pictured below, all of whom will be joining Mustang except for the late Brigadier General Hughes), and Major Alex Armstrong will be transferring to Ishval next month to personally oversee restoration efforts. Former Second Lieutenant Jean Havoc (bottom left), who is still undergoing physical therapy, will be joining Mustang in a non-military capacity, but hopes to return to active duty within the year.
After the recent passage of the Ishvalan Citizenship Bill, this move does not come as a surprise to many within the military. Major Alex Armstrong (pictured above, at right) stated to reporters this afternoon:
I do believe that I speak for myself, the Brigadier General, and Captain Hawkeye when I say that, nearly a decade later, we still feel the aftereffects of our experiences in Ishval. The reparations due to the Ishvalan people for the losses they have suffered are inconceivably great. We are prepared to do whatever is necessary and more to ensure that the restoration of Ishval is well-organized and well-executed; therefore, it seems only right that we be present to supervise all reconstructions and talks.
Mustang and Armstrong's men will be joined by Major Miles, from Fort Briggs, and the Ishvalan man formerly known as Scar, who has become an unofficial liaison between the military and Ishvalan refugees.
MILITARY WOMAN FAKES OWN DEATH
AMESTRIS I CENTRAL I NEWS I June 27, 1915
MILITARY HEADQUARTERS -- by Victoria Bertrand -- In another revelation of the promised day, 2nd Lieutenant Maria Ross has come back to the living! Though facts are still foggy, it seems the Lieutenant was in cahoots with her would be murderer Colonel Roy Mustang, and escaped the scene with help of his team. She then found safe haven in Xing until her sudden reappearance on the promised day. Fuhrer Grumman has stated that all charges against her for the murder of Maes Hughes a year ago have been dropped, but there have been some public outcry for a reason.
(Second Lieutenant Maria Ross, pictured above, after returning to active duty.)
Though Mrs. Gracia Hughes herself has met up with Lieutenant Ross and reportedly no longer blames Ross for the death of her husband, many of Brigadier General Hughes’ old friends and family are demanding she be given the penalty she once had, most even shocked her discharge didn’t stay. Both the Hughes and Ross have declined comment but we will see this problem fan out over the next few months.
ISHVALAN CITIZENSHIP BILL PASSES PARLIAMENT, MEMORIAL TO FOLLOW
AMESTRIS | CENTRAL | NEWS | June 28, 1915
MILITARY HEADQUARTERS — by Jason Vulderis — Today, members of Parliament and top executive officials were met with rounds of applause as they stepped out of City Hall following the announcement that the Ishvalan Citizenship Bill has been passed by Parliament. Though it has not been signed officially into law yet by Grumman, there is little doubt that the Fuhrer will have any objections.
The bill’s champion, Colonel Roy Mustang, made a short statement after this morning’s proceedings.
The old regime is past, but their actions, unfortunately, still have repercussions today. We are working to mend relations with those we’ve wronged in the past, and there is no bettter place to start than with the Ishvalans, whose rights and lives we snatched away years ago.
The bill’s passage marks a milestone for those who are fighting for the restoration of Ishval’s civil rights.
The bill also comes hand-in-hand with the initiative, spearheaded by Mustang and Major Alex Armstrong, to construct a memorial for Ishvalan citizens who lost their lives in the war. The memorial’s blueprints call for two components. One part will stand in Central Plaza along the Rheos River, directly facing the second part in Dar Rheos, a major Ishvalan city located in its Kanda district. The two components represent the unification of two peoples despite differences, drawn together by the Rheos River with hopes to forge a bond of mutual respect.
AERUGO OPEN TO TRADE TALKS
GLOBAL | AERUGO | NEWS | June 28, 2014
WARRINGSTOWN -- by Elizabeth Haynesworth -- The Fuhrer and his select entourage of diplomats and political advisors are residing tonight in the Southern Amestris border city of Warringstown, about eighty kilometers from South City. Tonight is their final night in Amestris before their departure early tomorrow morning for Doma, the capital of Aerugo.
With Grumman's reign in full effect and his non-aggressive international policy clearly broadcasted, it seems Amestris' neighbors are more open to peace talks. Aerugo's Prince Claudio is second to extend his hand, with Xing's Crown Prince Ling Yao being the first. Economists, politicians, and civilians alike eagerly anticipate a renewed trade with Aerugo; the country boasts a booming economy and vast natural resources, and is expected to be a valuable ally in rebuilding Amestris' economy and infrastructure after so many years of war.
Perhaps most importantly for lovers of Aerugonian cuisine, renewed trade means that fish may finally be widely available; the prized Aerugonian import has been scarce since the early years of the Ishval Civil War.
THE ROCK OF RUSH VALLEY
EYE ON AMESTRIS | June 28, 1915
RUSH VALLEY — by Alice Turan — Nestled between rocky highland and prairie, Rush Valley is arid and dry in the summer. And yet, take one step onto Main Street and you’d think you were by the tropical shores of Creta, judging by the shimmering sea of automail. The metal does nothing to appease the heat; walking down the street is like navigating a flock of radiators. The streets themselves are lined with ateliers, often with their goods on full display for enthusiasts and customers alike.
Turn just off Main Street, though, and the scene changes: this is where the locals go, away from the hubbub of tourism. There’s still chatter here, for sure, but the slogan-yelling has stopped altogether, replaced by hushed, intense conversations. This is where we find the good automail shops, and we mean really good: shops run by world-class mechanics who forego lush living for the grind-and-polish of metalwork. And here is where we find Winry Rockbell.
The sixteen-year-old automail mechanic can be counted among the world’s best, having made her first automail limb at the age of eleven. Since then, Rockbell has been practicing her skills through her constant maintenance of childhood friend Edward Elric, better known as the Fullmetal Alchemist, and her apprenticeship in Atelier Garfiel, the namesake of which (pictured below, at left) is a leading expert on heat-resistant automail and metallurgy. Rockbell is also under the wing of Dominic LeCoulte (pictured below, at right), known best for automail that incorporates sophisticated weaponry without sacrificing size and shape.
Rockbell expects to complete her apprenticeship by winter of next year — a feat almost unheard of these days, since a standard automail apprenticeship is five years or more. Furthermore, she has already set up shop here, in an alley between Main Street and the town plaza. The second branch of Rockbell Automail is busy, even on a Friday; the phone seems to be ringing non-stop, the customers are loud and oddly jovial, given the pain that comes with reattaching and adjusting automail limbs, and whirring saws and clinking metal soon become background music.
Winry Rockbell herself emerges from the din; with her aureate hair and feminine curves, she must seem an angel to her customers, her image contrasting with her sharp warnings, meticulously detailed instruction, and gruff words. For a teenager, she is so very motherly, and her stern manners betray a fierce pride in her work. This isn’t the first shop she’s run; Rockbell Automail’s first branch is back in her hometown of Resembool, where her grandmother, Pinako Rockbell (unsurprisingly, also a famous automail engineer known by some as the “Pantheress of Resembool”), still resides and works.
What’s next for the Winry, the aptly nicknamed “Rock of Rush Valley”? Not only is she following in the footsteps of her mentors by dabbling in extreme-condition automail gear, but she is also giving a nod to her medical origins by beginning to experiment with automail joint replacements, and someday, perhaps, automail organs. Rockbell dreams years ahead of her science; let’s hope technology can catch up with her.
COMING SOON: SCIENCE SATURDAYS WITH ALPHONSE ELRIC!
EYE ON AMESTRIS | SPECIAL | June 27, 1915
Dear readers of The Central Times and Eye on Amestris,
I am excited to announce that beginning every Saturday, I, Alphonse Elric, will be writing a short column for the Eye on alchemy and scientific advancements in general.
You may know me already, either from the Battle of Central Command or from my older brother, Edward. What you may not know is that, since early this year, I have been conducting research at Central University and abroad on medicinal and biological alchemy (of which we know little, right now) and the connections between our native alchemy and Xing’s alkahestry.
I firmly believe that alchemy should be for the good of the people; this belief is one of the reasons why I chose to pursue medicinal alchemy. My comrade, May Chang, was able to perform stunning healing transmutations with Xingese alkahestry, feats which Amestris’ alchemy cannot replicate. I seek answers to what makes alkahestry and alchemy so different, answers which may lead me to my final goal: healing living humans and animals with alchemy.
But I also believe that alchemy should be taught to the people. So often, alchemy is viewed as something mystical — an art form, a heaven-sent miracle, the devil’s design — when really, it is an application of scientific principles and human willpower to physical forms. Alchemists themselves are lauded as “geniuses” and “prodigies,” raised on a pedestal which no “ordinary human” can hope to attain. This notion is simply untrue. We are all mere humans, and we are all capable of understanding the scientific foundations of alchemy. It is true that the ability to perform alchemy is a rare and unexplained trait (though we suspect it has genetic roots), but what makes the difference between a good alchemist and a bad alchemist is the same as the difference between a good scientist and a bad scientist — knowledge of the elements, the laws, and the composition of the world around us.
Therefore, I will be penning a crash course in alchemy: its historical beginnings, its scientific principles, and beyond: medicinal alchemy, alkahestry, Cretan scientific principles (courtesy of my brother) and much more! Stay tuned every Saturday; I promise to limit the scientific jargon and go slowly, so everyone in Amestris can learn!
