Arthur didn’t actually fear or distrust Merlin after he learned the truth. If he did, he wouldn’t have considered sending Merlin back to Gwen. He just wanted time away from Merlin to process everything.

merlin/arthur literally had so many of the best tropes all in one. enemies to friends to lovers. literal soulmates. forbidden love. the bickering couple. mutual pining. but not knowing it’s mutual pining. jealousy. i don’t know if theres a name for it but the whole “i’m gonna act like you’re annoying to me but i’d die for you in a second” thing. they’re funny and sweet and epic and tragic. incredibly slow slow burn. actually the slowest burn in the history of slow burns because it’s STILL burning because merlin is still waiting for him. literally all other gay subtext ships WISH they were on their level but they aren’t and never will be.

maybe y'all don't feel like merlin was in love with arthur and that's fine, but what really makes this ship so real to me is that merlin absolutely lost sight of what this destiny that was thrown upon him meant. the prophecies speak of magic returning and albion being united, and making it happen was on merlin. but he, being this Dumb Bitch Sorcerer who was also Deeply In Love with his master, forgot about that and believed his destiny was arthur. but no, honey, you had to bring magic back through arthur, not for arthur, and that's the thing merlin never really understood. of course, that led him to make terrible choices because the weight of this fate was too much to handle, but that happened because merlin fell in love with arthur to the point where his sake was merlin's first and only priority.
