“Is it surprising that prisons resemble factories, schools, barracks, hospitals, which all resemble prisons?” — Michele Foucault, Discipline and Punish.

This film begins inside a prison. Its last act is a heist inside a swank Manhattan apartment building, which proves to be another prison. Residents there include a young paraplegic boy, stuck in an antiseptic room; two old women recluses, the older of whom may be suffering from elder abuse by the younger; and, a wealthy man who would rather allow his wife to be tortured than give up the combination to his safe.

Many of the spaces in the film are surrounded by cameras and microphones. Intimate conversations are recorded. Groups of men eavesdrop and comment disparagingly on their subjects. As Foucault suggests, surveillance has grown far beyond the state. Our landlords spy on us. Our lovers spy on us. There is nowhere to hide.

The team who plan and execute the heist are a collection of outcasts: young, black, foreign, and gay.

There is a fatality to these conflicts. The surveillance networks are two steps ahead of the renegade thieves. The cops wait outside and slowly descend on the apartment building. The game is rigged. Free will is a commodity of the discipline of power.
