is it okay that i as a civilian be against the part of the porn industry that abuses and puts sex workers in danger? i want to be a good ally to sex workers, so i figured id ask you this.
okay baby, I’m gonna break it down for you.
you definitely SHOULD be against abuse, and putting sex workers, but it’s incorrect to word it a “the part of the porn industry” because abuse and danger are not inherent parts of the porn industry. the only things inherent in porn is creating porn. abuse and danger of all kinds within the porn industry do not belong there, and those of us in the porn industry are fighting back against it to create a safe and comfortable workplace for us, and you should fight back against that too!
however, to say that you’re against the porn industry, rather than fighting to create a safe environment within our careers, you’re saying you want to destroy our source of income and destroy our jobs. for some of us, it’s literally the only means of survival that we have. saying that you’re against and want to eliminate the porn industry is saying you want all these survival sex workers in porn to lose their means of income, their means of independence, their means of feeding themselves and their children, providing a home for themselves, funding escapes from abusive homes and partners. you’re saying you hate sex workers and want us to die, in essence.
I’m sure that at that last sentence, you balked. “what? no! of course I don’t hate sex workers.” but really being against porn is being against sex workers. that is our livelihood. more than that, how many industries abuse and exploit women? all of them. children are trafficked into the agriculture industry, where they and their parents are often abused and raped. are these feminists who are against the porn industry calling for an end to the agriculture industry? what about the service industry? fast food? no? just sex work. why is that?
like I said, they hate sex workers.
if you care about sex workers, then the first step is to listen to us. attempting to take away our jobs, our income, our means of survival, is not caring about us. what can you do then, you might ask?
uplift and boost the voices of sex workers. we know what is best for us. we know how to best protect ourselves. we know better than anyone what changes need to be made to the industry. I promise you, no matter how well-educated on sex work you are, you don’t know as much as we do.
don’t speak over us. I can promise you that any idea, any conclusion, any possible train of thought that you’ve had on sex work has been said before by actual sex workers and said much better. accept that you cannot bring anything new to the table in this area. we know what we need. seriously, stop with the suggestions. it only annoys us and makes you seem daft and entitled.
reblog, don’t like. support sex worker’s work. the most obvious way to create a better environment within our work for us is to help us secure a more comfortable, consistent income. with a good income, we don’t have to take potentially dangerous clients, or work without screening, or any number of things. follow sex workers and reblog their content, their advertisements, their selfies. do not be a serial liker. if I catch you liking a thousand things on my page and not a single reblog, best believe I will not only block you, but I’ll warn my fellow sex workers about you.
buy our content. in the same line of thought as the bullet point above, support us in the most obvious way: financially. don’t you EVER ask for free anything. DO NOT attempt to haggle on prices. you that do that are the lowest of the fucking low and you don’t deserve to even be looked at by sex workers tbh.
call out whorephobia. the most basic of ally rules, of course, is to use your position of relative power to call out those who would do us harm and oppress us. swerfs, for instance, are literally attempting to murder me and my kind. they use cops to kidnap us, force us into slave labor to keep ourselves from being imprisoned and outed in local newspapers, causing some sex workers to have their children taken away from them and being outed to abusive partners and family. these people claim to be our most important allies, but they are probably the biggest danger to us sex workers. I would literally rather deal with a predator client than a swerf, if that shows you anything. they are actively working to destroy us. call them out. do not let these things slide. these are not harmless opinions they hold. they are actively seeking to kill us, to ruin our lives.
and the most basic and most important, listen to us. learn from us. educate yourself. all the information you could ever possibly want to know about sex work? we’re talking about it. actively listen to us. call out those who speak in ignorance about us.
