Embracing Circular (Re-)construction in the building sector

The building industry's impact on our environment is enormous, but there's hope for a greener, more sustainable future. Circular constructions, where building materials are reused, hold the key to reducing resource depletion and waste generation. However, to make this shift possible, we need to embrace digital innovation. Here are some of the essential points that drive this transformation:

🔹 Digital Models and Platforms: By collecting and monitoring data on materials stored in buildings, for example with digital product passports, we can use buildings as a resource instead of depleting raw materials from the Earth.

🔹 AI and Big Data: Predicting the availability of reusable materials is crucial for sustainable and also circular design. AI and big data analytics can forecast the amount of recyclable, reusable, and waste materials using images. Universities have developed machine learning algorithms to detect reusable materials from Google Street View images, advancing circular construction methodologies.

🔹 Blockchain Technology and IoT: Transparent value transactions are essential in the complex construction supply chain. Blockchain technology provides secure material tracing, while tagging technologies like QR codes and RFID chips enable easy material tracking. IoT gathers and transmits data on material condition, location and availability, streamlining resource management.

🔹 Digital Manufacturing: To save materials for reuse, we must dismantle buildings with efficiency and precision. Robotic manufacturing can simplify disassembly and sorting processes, making them safer and faster. Digital manufacturing methods like 3D printing and CNC milling allow for complex connections needed in reusing components.

He started his career as a Waste Management Consultant, where he worked with all stakeholders to optimize their waste management processes and reduce their environmental footprint. During this time, he developed a strong understanding of waste characterization, waste segregation, recycling, and waste-to-energy technologies. With a growing interest in sustainability and a desire to contribute to a global circular economy, Raphael expanded his expertise to include principles of circular value creation. He became a certified Circular Economy Expert and has worked with clients to redesign their products, processes, and business models to be more sustainable and efficient. Raphael helped them develop circular economy strategies for technical and biological cycles, implement closed-loop systems, and adopt circular business models that maximize value and minimize waste.

He is an Advocate for the European Technology Chamber and an Ambassador to SPSC Ambassador - Sustainability Promoters & Sustainability Collaborators.

Together with over 100 high-level participants, Raphael took part in the modelling of the transition to a sustainable and Circular Economy in Europe across six strategic priorities which contribute to the climate action and zero pollution ambitions of the EU Green Deal. These strategic priorities include Clean Energy, Circular Economy, Efficient Renovations, Sustainable Mobility, Sustainable Food, Preserving Biodiversity, Climate Action and Zero Pollution. Moreover, Raphael assisted in the mapping of future images and the creation of comprehensive transition pathways to implement a European Circular Industrial Economy. Lastly, with a back-casting approach, he helped built timelines for implementation strategies and analyzed possible trade-offs and co-benefits between 3 different priorities of the EU Green Deal. This complexity analysis included the implications of feedback loops between energy and food production and consumption systems within the principles of the circular economy and circular value creation.

Raphael's practical experience in waste management and circular economy has made him a sought-after consultant in the industry.
